GEORGE A. BENDER, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
lPatented June 27, 1916.
Application filed February 11, 1915. Serial No. 7,527.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen A. BENDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Side Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to folding receptacles, more particularly what is termed egg crates, and has for its object to provide a receptacle of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with means concealed within the receptacle, when set up, to main tain the same set up and to further provide a receptacle of such class, which when folded, will be arranged in a compactinanner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a receptacle of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with means carried by the end walls, within the receptacle, for locking the lid in closed position and to further provide the receptacle, with means in a manner as hereinafter set forth, to indicate whether the receptacle has been tampered with or opened.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a receptacle of the class referred to which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient in its use, readily set up and knocked down when occasion so requires, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a receptacle in accordance with this invention, the receptacle being set up. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a'receptacle when set up. Fig. 3 is an end view with the receptacle set up. Fig. at is an elevation, partly in longitudinal section, of the receptacle when folded. Figs. 5 and 6 are details of end and side Wall connections. Figs. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 are details of lid and keeper. Fig. 13 is a cross sectional view of the receptacle when set up illustrating the partition. Fig. 1% is a sectional View, broken away, of the holding member.
Referring to the drawings in detail the receptacle comprises a bottom section consisting of a bottom 1, a pair of side members 2, 3, and a pair of end members 4:, 5. The members 2 to 5 are fixedly secured against the edges of the bottom 1. The members l, 5, are of greater height than the members 2, 3, and each of these latter members has secured thereto a pair of plates 7, each offset as at 6 to provide a lug. The function of the lug 6 will be presently referred to.
Secured to the upper face of the bottom 1, centrally thereof, and extending transversely with respect thereto, is a metallic strip 8, formed with a lengthwise extending, vertically disposed flat rib 9, having formed centrally thereof a longitudinal slot 10. The strip 8 is secured between the members 2, 3.
The side members 2 and 3 are termed the stationary sections of the side walls and the end members 4 and 5 are termed the stationary sections of the end walls.
Associated with the stationary sections a, 5, of the end walls, are hinged sections 11, 12, the former have secured to each side edge thereof, an angle-shaped member 13, having a portion 1a thereof extending in parallelism with respect to the side of the receptacle and the said portion lat is formed with a series of key-hole shaped openings 15. Secured to the section 12, at each side thereof, is a vertically disposed angle-shaped member 16, having a portion 17 thereof extending in parallelism with respect to the side of the receptacle and said portion 17 has a se ries of key-hole shaped openings 18. The members 13 are oppositely disposed with respect to the members 16. The section 11 is hinged to the member'l, as at 19, and the section 12 is hinged to the member 5 as at 20. The members 13 and 16 can be folded upon the top edges of the members 2, 3, and when folded, the portions 14, 17 of the members 13, 16 extend against the outer face of the sections 2, 3, and the lugs 6 of the plate 7 engage in the outer face of the openings 15 and 18 thereby maintaining the sections 11, 12 upon the top edge of the stationary sections 2, 3, of the side walls.
The section 11 has secured to its inner face a transversely extending keeper or guide 21 and a retaining member 22, the latter is positioned below the guide 21. The section 11 has an opening 23 and arranged above said opening is the retaining member 22. Secured against the outer face of the section 11, is a hinged hasp 24, which is adapted to extend over a staple 25 and to close the opening 23. The staple 25 is arranged below the opening 23 and is adapted to receive a seal 26 after the hasp 24 ex tends over said staple 25.
Secured against the inner face of the section 12, at the upper portion thereof, is a pair of keepers 27 and which have looped portions 28 to provide seats for a pintle 29. The looped portions 28 extend into the inner face of the section 12, the latter being grooved for that purpose. The reference character 30 denotes a shiftable holding member carried by the pintle 20 the said member 30 being secured at one end of said aintle 29 and extends into said section 12. bee Figs. 7 and 9.
The function of the keeper 21, retaining member 22, and holding member 30 will be presently referred to.
The receptacle further includes a pair of removable side sections which are indicated at 31 and 32, and each of said removable side sections, has its outer face, at each end, provided with a transverse strip 33, having a series of spaced lugs or headed pins 34. Each of the removable side sections 31, 32,
. has secured to its inner face, centrally thereof, a vertically disposed strip 35, formed with a series of spaced lugs or headed pins 36.
The lugs or headed pins 34 associated with the openings 15 and 18 of the strips 13, 16, for detachably connecting the removable side sections 31, 32 with the hinged sections 11, 12 of the end Walls for the purpose of maintaining said removable sections of the side walls upon the stationary sections of the side walls as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. a
The receptacle includes a detachable partition and which is indicated at 37 and has each of its side edges provided with a channel-shaped plate 38 formed with bayonet slots 39, and which associate with the lugs 36 for detachably connecting the partition with the removable'sections 31, 32 of the side walls. The partition 37 is furthermore provided with a retaining member 40 having an angle-shaped lower end 41, which is adapted to engage in the slot 8 and in connection with the lugs 36 and slots 38 detachably secure the partition 37 in position.
The lid of the receptacle is indicated at 42, and which has an angle-shaped reinforcing member secured to the inner face thereof. The depending portion 44 of said member has secured thereto, centrally thereof, a
fiat connecting arm 45, provided with a slot- 46, and when the lid 42 is mounted invposition the arm 45 extends down through the keeper 21 and the retaining member 22 projects through the slot or opening 46, under such conditions the arm 45 is coupled with the hinged section 12 of the end wall; hen the lid is connected in the manner as stated, it is mounted upon the top edges of r the removable sections of the side walls and positioned between the portions 14 and 17 of the members 13 and 16.
The other end of the lid 42 has secured to its lower face an angle-shaped member 47, having its depending portion formed with a longitudinal slot 48. IThe slot 48 is adapted to have retaining member 30 extend therethrough when the'lid is mounted in position upon the top edges of the removable side sections 31 and 32. To further 1.
