BENJAMIN 'r. CARSON, or nniissnrinnfinnw YORK, ASSIGNOR T DU BoIs MACHINE snongmo, or ALBANY, new YORK, A CORPORATION or NEW YORK.
" To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN T. CAR- SON, a cltizen of the United States, residing 'at Rensselaer, county of Rensselaer', and
State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Biston Packing-Rings, of which the following is a specification. i The invcntion.relat'es to such improvements and consists of the novel construction .and combination of parts hereinafter de- 7 scribed "and subsequently claimed. I
. ing drawings, and the reference characters bodying my invention.
Reference may be had to the accompany ina'rked thereon, which form a part (if this s" ecification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein, The object of the invention istoproVide a. simple, strong and tight-fitting pist'onpacking ring, particularly adapted for use 1n gas-engines and the like.
' Figure 1 of. he drawings 'is a" view in perspective, showing acom-plete ring em- Fig. 2 is a crosssection of the same taken on the broken line 2-2 in Fig. 1. Fig. '3 is a cross-section of the same taken on the broken line-"3-3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the same taken on the broken line Hin' Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the outer ring-member. Fig. '6 is a view in perspective of an- 1ntermed1ate ortion of said ring-member. Fig. 7 1s a view 1n perspect veof the end portions of the inner ring-member.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, my

- tact with each other 4, a lug, S, the inner surface, 9, of which is in a plane substantially tal'igential to the inner surface ofsaidinner ring-men'iber. The longitudinal extent and area of the plane surface, 9, on the flange, 8, is substantially equal to the longitudinal extent and area of the plane surface,'7, on the flange, 6, when the ends of the ring, 1, are force together by their confinement within an engine-cylinder. The ring-member, 3, with its lug, 8, fully laps, and bridges the point of division, 2, of the inner ring-member; and the plane surfaces, 7, and 9, on the respective ring-numbers, make sliding conas the ringexpands or contracts.
The engagement of the surface, 9,. with the surface, 7 effectively prevents relative rotation of one ring-member upon the other, without materially wveakening the ring, while substantially strengthening the middle portion of the outer ring-member. By
the tangential arrangement of the surfaces,
7 and 9, on the respective rings,uthe tendency of ordinary movements of contraction and expansion to break the continuity of Patented J line 27, 1916. Application filed December 14, 915. Serial No. 66.684. k
the outer surface of the ring is minimized.
I have shown the external groove, 5, formed by a single angle-in the inner ringmember by means of a flange extending along one edge only of said ring-member;
but for certain purposes of the invention, the
cross-sectional form of the groove may be' varied so long as the grooved ring-member has along one of its edges a groove-forming flange terminating in tangenthl surfaces V above described" with a tangential surface on the mner surcoiiperative in the manner face of the lug on the complementary ringmember which occupies the groove.
What I claim as new-and desireto secure by Letters Patent is- A piston-packmg ring comprising a pair of divided ring-members breaking joints with each other, one of said ring-members being provided with an external groove formed by an external flange extending along one edge of ends of said flange terminating in a surface substantially tan ential to the body of sa1d ring-member at t e ends thereof, sa1d other said ring-member, the.
sliding contact with the tangential sm fzics on the ends of said flange.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day Of DE CEID b GI, 1915. BENJAMIN T. (:ARSQ Q Witnesses:
