T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAsAYosnr TAKEUCHI, subject of the Emperor of Japan, and resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of WVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bamboo Cutlery, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to articles of cutlery and particularly to knives and forks which are made from natural wood fiber products of the type wherein in the growth of the material, circumferential layers of dense hard material are formed, such, for instance, as the exterior layers of bamboo and allied growths.

The object of my invention is to produce articles of this kind which will be attractive in appearance, cheap in cost and which may be thrown away after use or retained as novel souvenirs.

The particular features which I claim as my invention will be defined by the claim hereto.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown my invention applied in the forms of construction which I now prefer.

Figure 1 is a face view of a knife made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 8 is a face view of the opposite side of the knife, and Fig. 4 a section of the knife taken on line 77 of Fig. 3.

I have discovered that bamboo and other growths of analogous character, which possees a hard, dense outer shell may be advantageously employed for the manufacture of cutlery of a sort which is intended for more or less temporary use. Such growths as bamboo form a fairly eflicient cutting edge for a knife and is also strong, resilient and not liable to break. Articles of the character mentioned, when formed from bamboo, should be cut from the material in such position that the fiat portions, as the blades of knives, occupying the position in the wood corresponding with a circumfer- 3, the handle 1 is ofi-set toward one edge of 1 the flake and is of a width which is contained within one-half the width of the flake or strip of bamboo employed. This permits the cutting of another knife handle from the same longitudinal section, as has been indicated by the broken line outline 10. The blade 2 is off-set to one side in a diiferent plane however, forming a shoulder at 3, whereby the blade of the second knife may be cut from the same longitudinal section, as has been indicated by the broken line outline at 20. In this manner, material may be economized.

Articles of this character made from such material are quiteeflective for service and are very pleasing in appearance making rather attractive souvenirs. They may be cleansed and used a number of times, if so desired, or they may be used once and then preserved as souvenirs or thrown away.
