FELIX Gr.'KAPELMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPRING-MATTRESS.
To all whom it may concern: s
Be it known that I, FELIX G. KAPELMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring- Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in a spring mattress and more particularly in the side guards for preventing 'an undesirable displacement of the bed clothes that are supported on such mattress.
One of the main Objects of the present invention is to provide a rigid non-sagging side guard for spring mattresses.
More generally an aim of the invention is to provide means for preventing the side guards of a spring mattress from sagging or becoming deformed, due to a person sitting on ,the'edge of the bed which undesirable sagging deformation is strikingly evident with the resilient side guard constructions heretofore in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a reinforcement whereby the main I body of the spring mattress will be reinforced against any undue sagging deformation.
Still another object of the invention is to provide such a rigid non-sagging side guard which is connected to the main body of the spring mattress by straps thereby to reinforce the main body of the'spring mattress.
These and other features, capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from the subjoined detailed description of one specific embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a fragmental perspective showing a portion of the bed equipped with the present improved spring mattress. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental detail showing a corner of the spring mattress. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the spring mattress detached. Fig. 4 is a section of the same along the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are fragmental end and side elevations respectively of one of the corner brackets of the frame of the spring mattress. Fig. 7 is an end elevation of the spring mattress and frame detached. Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmental perspective showing a portion of an end cross bar of the frame of the spring mattress illustrating the raised portion against which the non-flexible side guard is Specification of Letters Patent. Patent d J 27 1916 Application filed March 13, 1915.
Serial No. 14,082.
clamped. Fig. 9 is a perspective of the suspended by and secured to the end bars 12 in any suitable manner.
Above each of the longitudinal sides of the spring mattress 14, one of the side guards 15 is provided, having each of its ends secured to one of the end bars 12, respectively, and supported in position above the longitudinal sides of the spring mattress 14: by means of brackets 16 mounted on the tubular side bars 11.
The side guards 15 are substantially rigid and non-flexible and of sufficient tensile,
strength so that a person sitting thereon will not in any way permanently deform the same. 7
To protect the sprin mattress against undue sagging, straps v1? are provided along the side guards 15 and connected to the longitudinal border members 18 of the spring mattress 141. The straps 17 further tend to maintain in place the bed clothes formed on the spring mattress 1% and prevent them from extending out between the side guards 15 and the border members 18.
The corner brackets 13 each comprise a tubular portion 19 mounted and fixed in place on the end of a tubular bar 11, an up wardly extending arm 20 of L-shaped cross section, diminishing in its upward extent, a
lateral supporting plate 21 extending outwardly from the arm 20 and disposed adj a cent to the tubular portion 19, and a transversely disposed supporting member 22 secured at the upward diminished end ofthe arm 20. The supporting member 22 and the upper diminished end of the arm 20 are preferably secured to the vertical portion 23 of an end bar 12, while the horizontal portion 241 of such end bar extends inwardly and is connected with the spring mattress 14 by coil springs 25. The side guards 12 each preferably comprise a metallic table the ends of which are secured to the ends of the end bars 12. In the present instance each of the ends of the end bars 12 are provided with a raised portion 26 between which raised portion 26 and the channel 27 of a channeled clamping plate 28 an end of a cable is disposed and clamped in place, the clamping plate 28 being secured to the end bars 12 in any suitable manner.
The brackets 16 for supporting a cable above a border member 18 of the spring mattress are disposed one at each end of a bar 11. Each bracket 16 comprises a tubular portion 29 fixed to the bar 11, an outwardly extending portion 30, and an upwardly extending portion 31 (Fig. 10) at the end of which is formed a rounded notch 32 for receiving a cable 15. The straps 17 are disposed on the cables 15 intermediate two brackets 16 and suitably spaced from one another and from the brackets 16, and each comprise an upper looped portion 33 to grasp a cable 15 and a lower looped portion 34 to grasp a border member 18 of the spring mattress 1 f. By this means, the body portion of the spring mattress 14 will be supported.
.VVhen the spring mattress is placed in position on a bedstead such as illustrated in Fig. 1, the lateralsupporting plates 21 will rest on the longitudinal side bars 35 of the bedstead, and the longitudinal tubular side bars 11 of the mattress will be disposed inside of the side bars 35 as shown, while the spring mattress ll will extend over the side bars 35, with the cables 15 above the longitudinal border members 18 of the spring mattress, this being permitted by the outward extensions 30 of the brackets 16.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention.
insane i I claim:
1. The combination with a frame having end bars, of a spring mattress secured to said frame, side guards comprising a cable having its ends directly secured to said end bars, and brackets secured to said frame and supporting said side guards above the sides of said spring mattress.
2. The combination with a frame having end. bars and side bars, of a spring mattress, means for securing said mattress to said end bars, brackets fixed on said side bars and extending above the sides of said spring mattress, there being notches in the upper ends of said brackets, and inelastic side guards comprising a cable having its ends secured to said end bars, and extending over and being supported in the notches of said brackets.
3. The combination with a frame having end bars. and side bars, of a spring mattress, means for securing said mattress to said end bars, brackets fixed on said side bars and extending above the sides of said spring mattress, said end bars projecting beyond the sides of said side bars togther with said spring mattress, said brackets comprising an outer extension having an arm extending from the outer end thereof and extending above the sides of the mattress, there being notches in the upper ends of said upwardly extending arms, and inelastic side guards comprising a cable having its ends secured to said end bars and extending over and being supported in the notches of said upwardly extending arms.
