spring motors, and has specially in View an improvement in spring motors by means of which an automatic re-winding of thel motor is obtained that will subserve the function of delaying the time of running down after the motor has been given a full wind.
In producing a spring motor capable of performing the functions `generally stated above it will be understood, of course that the essential features of the same are susceptible to changes in details and structural arrangements, one simple and practical embodiment of the same being shown in the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the improved spring motor, the section being taken on the line 1-1, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-/1, Fig. 1.
The improved spring motor comprises in its general organization a base or foundation 1 provided with end standards 2 and a centrally located standard 3, thc standards being relatively positioned for the reception of two independent motors, to be described in detail. The lower portions of the standards 2 and 3 have the two longitudinally alined arbors S journaled thereinand at an intermediate point, the said standards have the drive shaft 4 journaled therein. The upper portions of the standards 2 and 3 have the transmission shaft 5 journaled therein, the arbors 3, drive shaft 4 and transmission shaft 5 being in parallel relation. Bracket arms 6 project laterally from the standards and have the power shaft 7 journaled therein. As a detail of the invention, it is preferred that the bearings for the shafts and arbors be of the antifriction type.
Each arbor 8, adjacent its ends has gears 9 loose thereon and beyond said gears, the
arbors have ratchet wheels 10 fast thereon. As will be observed .by reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the arbors 8 project beyond the standards 2, and such projecting portions of said arbors have ratchet wheels 11 fast thereon. Holding pawls 13 are pivotally connected to the standards 2 and 3 and engage the ratchet wheels 10 to prevent reverse movements of said ratchet wheels.
As is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, each arbor 8 is` equipped with a pair of the gears 9, the pairs of gears forming heads for a cage structure that includes said heads and a plurality of regularlyspaced head-connecting bars 14v that are suitably attached to said head, for example, by means of the lugs l5 carried bysaid heads and to which the bars 14 are fastened. Each arbor 8 has the inner end portions of the plurality of springs v16 coiled thereon, the said inner ends being rmly fastened to the arbors, as suggested in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The outer ends of said springs 16 extend to and are fastened to the bars 14. l
Drive shaft 4 is provided 'with gears 17 that are in mesh with gears 9 o-f arbors 8, and transmission shaft 5 has a gearr 19 thereon that meshes with a gear 13 on shaft 4. rIhe power shaft 7 has a sprocket or other connection `2O with transmission shaft 5. Transmission shaft 5 has its ends provided with bell-crank levers 21, the free ends ofl said levers having adjustable rod connections V22 with crank plates 23 carried by the ends of power shaft 7. rlhe bell-crank levers 21 have rod connections 24e with cranks 25 mounted on the outer ends of the arbors S, and said cranks 25 have springpressed pawls 26 pivoted thereto vand in engagement with the ratchets 11.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that the springs 16 are prmarily wound lby rotating the arbors S and that when the controlling mechanism (to be described) is released, the expansion of the said springs causes the cages to rotate, and through the described gear' connections 9 and 17, and 18 and 19, sha-ft 5 is rotated' movements of shaft 7 cause levers or cranks 25, through the rods 22 and 24, bell-crank levers 2l and crank plates 23, and pawls 26 Vto intermittently rotate ratchets 11, and said ratchets ll being fast on the arbors 8, the arbors will rotate with said ratchets. The springs 16 being fast on arbors 8, it is obvious that the described rotation of said arbors will tighten the springs about the arbors in such a manner that running down of all the springs, after a preliminarv winding is delayed. In operation the tw'o series of springs are thus alternately wound on their arbors 8, and all expand at the same time to rotate the cages. Such rotation of the cages, in addition to furnishing the power for driving the shaft 7, also causes a partial rewind of the springs labout the arbors 8 in an intermittent manner, as described.
A controller and governor for the motor is provided and which may be of the form shown in detail in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings, and referring to said figure it will be seen that said controller and governor includes a gear 27 fast on shaft 7 meshing with a gear 28 fast on a controller shaft Q9, said shaft 29 having one e-nd journaled in an arm 30 depending from bracket G and its other end ournaled in standard 3. A balance wheel 3l is fast on shaft 29 and also a governor including a stationary collar 32, aslidable collar 33, springs 33a connecting the collars, and weights 3% carried by the springs. The collar 38 has a grooved portion 35 that is engaged by a ring 36, the ring being carried by rods 37 extending to a plate 38 fast on an adjusting screw 39 mounted in an offset arm 40 depending from bracket G. The screw 39 is provided with a suitable handgrip 4l by means of which said screw may be manually manipulated to cause ring 3G to adjust the governor and also to cause said ring to act as a brake on collar 33 and thereby control the operation of the motor.
l claim as my invention l. In a spring motor the combination of a frame, shafts and a pair of arbors having bearings in the frame, a cage loose on each arbor, a series of springs connecting each arbor and the cage therewith, gearing by which motion is transmitted from both :ages to the shafts, a pair of ratchet wheels fast on each arbor, pawls carried by the frame and engaging the ratchet wheels, a lever on each arbor, means operated by the levers for causing the arbors to rewind -the springs, and means for intermittently oper ating the levers.
2. A spring motor comprising a frame provided with standards arranged in spaced relation, a pair of arbors journaled in the standards, a cage loose on each arbor and including end gears and connecting bars, a series of springs fastened to the bars and the arbors, ratchets fast on the arbors, pawls carried by the frame standards and engaging the ratehets to prevent reverse movement of the arbors, a power shaft having gear connections with the cages, means operated by the power shaft for intermittently rotating the arbors to rewind the springs and a` combined governor and manually operable controller for the motor.
