Be it known-that I,:CHARnEs J. T. GoRDEs,
a citizen of the @United States, and a resident of Waldwick, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey,.=have1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding Apparatus,-of which the following is -a specification.
In a prior patent granted to me @ctober 29th, 1907,-No. 869,828, Iihave -disclosedap- ,paratus for making building :blocks particularly adapted for formingblocks of a .type
in which :each block is divided and has an airspace-therein adapted to :form with corresponding airwspacesiof other blocksa continuous air-space when such blocks are assembled and cemented together :to form a complete wall, the two parts of the *individual blocks of this type being illustrated in said patent as held together by tiepieces or anchor-bars formed in the block in-theprocess of molding the same in the apparatus.
The present invention is intended for the making of blocks ofthe same general type and is directed particularly to the-mold proper; and v the principal object of the invention is tocprovidean improved molding apparatus for positively centering the tiepieces or anchor-bars in the mold informing divided blocks of the character just described-containing air-spaces separating different parts ofsuch blocks.
In the drawings Figure -1 is aplan with partsbroken away -of a molding apparatus illustrating -my ;present invention. Figs. 2-1O inclusive are details of various kinds of anchor-bars, cores and blocks used or madein'such a-machi'ne.
Similar characters designate likeparts in all the figures of the drawings.
The principal membersof the-mold will usually be, as in my aforesaid patent, two end walls, two-sidewalls and-abottom wall. In the construction illustrated the end walls may be of the type indicated at 4 and 5 and the side walls of the types illustrated at 6 and 7 each being a still plate movable in and out to close and open the mold, and all cooperating with a suitable bottom wall 3. This bottom wall is intended to move up and down in a rectangular frame 3.
The end walls may be moved in and out by suitable operating connections indicated at 57 and 60.

vThe principal-feature of the molding apparatus shown is the ,provision of me'ans for positively locatingthe tie-pieces or anchorbars of divided building blocks in such a manner vas vto prevent displacement of the anchor-bar while the blocks are being "formed. In order'to accomplish this I prefer -:to make use of, core-pieces having in their meeting faces horizontal anchor-bar channels with offset portions, such as vertical recesses, intersecting them for the purpose of preventing lateral movement of correspondingly shaped anchor-bars, that is, of
anchor-bars having lateral ears or projections of such construction that said bars substantially fit the channels and recesses in the meeting faces of the core-pieces and are held by the walls of such recesses against lateral movement, that is, movement endwise 0f the anchor-bar. Fig. 2 illustrates the meeting This face of one of the core-pieces 74 and the channels and recesses formed therein and shaped to fit an'anchonbar 7 5, from which project ears or lugs 76 fitting the recesses in the face of said core-piece. This core-piece has the same shape in cross-section as the main core-piece illustrated in Fig. 1. This shape does not interfere with its being drawn from the block by movement lengthwise of the mold of the end-wall to which it is secured. Fig. 3 illustrates one form of building-block 77 formed in the mold and having embedded therein an anchor-bar of the type shown at 75 in Fig. 2, the airspace 78 in the block being one having walls tapering from the top and bottom toward the center of the block. In this block the anchor-bar is positively positioned and centered, it being impossible for it to be displaced when held in the manner shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4: illustrates a modification of the invention in which a two-part anchor-bar is employed, these parts being symmetrically formed, as shown at 75, so that two may be used together at the vertical center of the building-block and the two halves of the two-part anchor-bar used near the bottom and top respectively of the block.
Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate in side elevation and in transverse section the details of construction of a modification of the two-part center core-piece 72-72 shown in the main views, the manner in which the upper half 72 of the center core-piece is recessed to form a handle for lifting it out of the block being clearly illustrated in these views and in Fig. 2. These views also illustrate at 79 how a channel and locking recess are formed in the upper meeting face of the lower member 72 of the center core-piece in a manner similar to that in which such channel and recess are formed in an end corepiece. Fig. 7 shows an underside view of the lower half 72 of the 'centercore-piece.
Fig. 8 illustrates a modification of the invention in which the end core-piece 74 has horizontal channels and locking recesses near the upper and lower sides thereof in which are positively located the two halves 75' of the two-part anchor-bar shown in Fig. 4:, this being a variation of the mode of using the anchor-bars.
Fig. 9 illustrates still another means for tying the two parts of a divided buildingblock together, the device shown being a tieframe 80 rather than an anchor-bar. It consists of two longitudinal members and two transverse cross-bars or anchor-bars each of which cross-bars has a projecting lug or car 81 for locating the tie-frame in a central position with respect to the core-pieces of Figs. 5, 6 and 7.
What I claim is:
1. 'A molding apparatus comprising side and end walls and a bottom wall, in com bination with a core having a plurality of core-pieces, two of which are end core-pieces secured to said end walls and one of which is a main core-piece secured to said bottom wall, said core having in the meeting planes of said main and end core-pieces anchorbar channels with offset portions positioned and constructed to receive and prevent end wise movement of corresponding anchor bars having projecting ears constructed to lie in the offset portions of said channels.
2. A molding apparatus comprising side and end walls and a bottom wall, in combination with a core having a plurality of core-pieces, two of which are end core-pieces secured to said end walls and one of which is a two-part main core-piece divided horizontally and the lower part of which is secured to said bottom wall, said core having in the meeting planes of said main and end core-pieces anchor-bar channels with ofiset portions positioned and constructed to receive and prevent endwise movement of corresponding anchor-bars having projecting ears constructed to hem the offset portions of said channels.
