UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER EVERETT MOLINS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
APPARATUS FOR PACKING CIGARETTES AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER Evnnn'rr MoLrNs, a citizen of the United Statescf America, residing in London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Packing vCigarettes and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a packing machine in which the articles to be packed, such as cigarettes or the like, are continuously fed' to moving carriers, ar-
ranged on an endless conveyer at suitable distances from each other and running between side or guide checks. 4
The feed of the. article to be oacked'is effected by means of endless bands arranged at right angles to the above-menti0ned endless conveyor, from which bands th y articles are pushed on swept down on to the longitudinalgconveyer by means of a further band provided with sweepers.
' 'Eh counting or distribution of the articles into groups of certain number is effected by vertically adjustable retaining plates'pirovided above thefeed band, which periodically descend on to the feed band and arrest the movement of the articles being fed forward and collect them in groups.
he invention will be fully described withreference to the accompanying drawings, in which one form of apparatus constructed according to the invention is illustrated .Figure- 1 is a side elevationof the ma- Fig. 2 is a plan of same, and Fig.
Sectional side elevation similar toFi'g. 3
showing a modifiedrform of stop plate.
"An endless conveyer band or chain 2 runs under the table 1 and is provided at intervals with carriers or pushers 3, which project through and move along a 'slot in the tablefl. V angles tolthis conveyer band 2 are arranged feed bands 4, above which again is arranged ashort endless band- 5 in linewith and above, the conveyor 2 and pI vided with sweepers 6. At' the-side of this last band 5 is-provided a plate 7 capable of; vertical movement and which can bedepressed on the. bands 4. There are further,
preferably, v arranged on the table-,1, side Qheeks 8,-gwhioh' guideithe articles forward and preventany lateral'movement of them- I as theyiarc fed alongthe table.
Above the table land at right Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J une 20, 1916,
Application. filed March 3, 1916. Serial No. 81,929.
It will be obvious by mere duplication of feed bands 4, so as to provide a series of parallel bands, the articles may be supplied to the main carrier 2 in layers.
The operation of the machine is as fol lows, as applied by way of example to the packing of cigarettes: The cigarettes are arranged at short distances from each other on the feed bands 4 and are continuously fed to the table by this constantly traveling band. The plate 7 is, however, periodically lowered in front of the cigarettes on the: band 4 and so causes thecigarettes to be collected together in groups. As soon as the desired number, for example 5, is obtained, theiplate 7 is lifted and this group of five'cigarettes is now at once conveyed under the sweeper band 5 and swept by one of the sweepers 6 from the band 4 on to the table 1,- where the next carrier 3 conveys the group along the table 1; r The cigarettes are now fed by the continuously moving band 2 or the carrier 3 to the package'awaiting it, which in turn .is conveyed. in the' articles having, in combination, a continuously moving band jprovided with pushers at fixed intervals,- a second continuously.
moving feed band arranged aboveyand at right angles thereto, and a third continu ously'moving band arranged above said feed band and provided with sweepers to deliver cigarettes from said feedband to said first named band,, substantially as herein .described. Y
2. Packing apparatus, especially applicable for packing cigarettes and similar arti-,
cles having, in combination, iacontinuously moving "band provided with pushers at fixed intervals, a second continuously moving feed band arranged above and at right angles thereto, a -vertical-ly moving plate to engage and group the cigarettes at predeterminedintervals, and a third continuarranged above said feed-band and adapted feed band and p'rovided'wit-lrsweepers to-' deliver cigarettes from said feed band to said first named band, substantially as herein described. ,7
' 3. Packing apparatus, especially applicable for packing cigarettes and similar articles having, in combination, a continuously moving band provided with pushers at fixed intervals, a second continuously moving feed band arranged above and at right angles thereto, a verticallynioving plate arranged above the said feed band and at an angle -'thereto for engaging and inclining or raising on edge oval cigarettes and grouping them at predetermined intervals.
' 4. Packing apparatus, especially applicable for packing cigarettes and similar articles having, in combination, a continuously moving band, a second continuously moving feed band arranged above and at right 'an- A gles thereto; and a third continuously moving'band arranged above said feed band and traveling in a direction parallel to the first mentioned band, andprovided with means for sweeping cigarettes from said feed band to said'm rst mentioned band. v 5. Packing apparatus, especially applicable for packing cigarettes and similar articles having, in combination, a continuously moving band, a second continuously moving feed band arranged above and at right au- 'gles thereto, and a third continuously movintervals, a second continuously moving band arranged above and at right angles thereto, and .a third continuously movingv band arranged above said feed band and provided with sweepers to deliver cigarettes from said feed, band to said first named band and traveling in a direction parallel to the first band.
In testi'monywhereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
