Be it known that I, Momus URI BERN- nnm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jeflerson and State ofKentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Conveyers,of which the following is a specification. y 1
This invention relates to certain improvements in conveying systems of the type, speakinggenerally, wherein 'a vertical elevator is employed in conjunction with means for feeding thereto and therefrom the goods which are to be transported thereby.
Many systems of this kind have been proposed, but hitherto none of them have been capable of delivering to" the elevator and conveying therefrom, in an entirely automatic manner and with absolutecert-ainty, boxes and similar'things of various sizes and kinds and of different or ordinary constructions and sizes, such as are handled in bottling houses, packing houses, warehouses, etc., and, consequently which do not themselves form a part of the conveying system.
The principal aim of'my. invention is'to provide avsystem embodying a vertical elevator and feeding devices, so related to each' other that boxes and other packages, forming no part of the conveying system and of ordinary constructiomsuch' as are handled be picked up by t e elevator, transported thereby to the floor for which it is intepded rom the elevator and carried ofi to the ace at which it is to be discharged,'all with cer-' tainty and entirely automaticallyexcept for the incidental adjustment of a certain part or parts to ermit the packages to passby the same, w ereby important purposes are subserved which have not been accom l-ished by any apparatus or system of this type hitherto proposed. While other constructions than those hereiirset forth may be employed, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims, yet the particular constructions herein illustrated and described most effectively lend themselves to, and'combine with each other in the production of.the important purposes which I have in view,.and, therefore, are made the subject of claims which are more and less restricted thereto.

The members A referred to consists of a pair of chains 5 and 6 which run bvert sprockets 7 and 8 suitably supported at the top and bottom of the elevator. To the shaft of one of the sprockets, as 7, a driving motor 9 of any suitable kind is connected.
Each of the-uprights-l is preferably made of angle irons, arranged to form guides for the chainwhieh runs therein.
Each of the platforms B- is provided with a pair of vertically extending arms 10,- the lower portionsof which are connected 'with each other by a transverse bar 11 which supports a plurality of fingers 12 which extend forward and rearward therefrom, and are adapted to carry boxes, barrels, bags and other packages to be elevated. These fingers are separated from each other by spaces 13 which constitute lateral openings formed in the platform. The platform is arranged between the pair of chains 5 and 6 and each of its upwardly extending arms 10 is carried by a stub-shaft 14 which in 'turn is carried by the contiguous chain, 5

' The elevator may be made of any desired height and to extend, if necessary,
from the bottom to the top of a building of any; height, through openings in the floors of said building. This is clearly shown in Fig. 1, in which the several floors of a build- -ing re designated by the characters 100 1 4,;inclusive, and the openings therein are designated by the characters 101-104, inclusive. On each of said floors there is arranged a gravity conveyer, or a suitable system of conveyors, X, which feeds the packages toward the receiving sideof the elevator, and on each floor there is the height of the elevator and therpartieular requirements as to the capacity which the answer, and may be varied, as desired.
Between each of the conveyers X and Y and the contiguous side of the elevatorthe before-mentioned approximately horizontal feed and dischargemembers C are arranged. These members practically form continuations of the respective conveyers. They may be slightly inclined to an extent correspond.-

In the form shown best in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the feeding or discharging member is composed of four separated sections 25, 25 and 35, 35. The package rests upon these rollers and in addition to being moved withthe chains, is fed forward on the rollers by the rotation of the latter.' The package therefore travels, at a speed greater than that of the chains, whereby it moves a greater distance in a given ength of time than otherwise. The tracks 32 by their frictional resistance to the rollers stop the rotation of the latter upon the conclusion of their travcling movement and thus cause movement the rollers to cease. The

The means (D) which I prefer for transmitting intermittent movement to the traveling chains of each of the feed and: discharge members compriscs a pair of shafts 36 and 36*, which are provided with sprockets 37 and 38. These sprockets 37 and 38 engage an endless chain 39, the working stretch of which is parallel to the cont-iguous elevator chain and is of any suitable mittently from the adjacent continuously moving platform-carrying chain of the ele vator, through the medium of a suitable part or parts which derive movement' from the. latter chain. In a conveying system, an elevator provided with a package-carrying platform, combined with a package conveyer arranged on the receiving side of the elevator and comprising two con'iplementary p01 tions which mutually intersect the plane of travel of the platform, each of said portions having package conveying rollers, and means whereby intermittent traveling movement is imparted to the rollers of one of said portions at a predetermined time in the travel of the platform.

In a conveyor system, an elevator provided with package carrying platform's, combined with a means arranged at the discharge'side of the elevator and comprising" two complementary portions mutually intersecting the plane of travel of the platform and each provided with package conveying-rollers, the rollers of the outer of said portions provided with means for causing the same to travel when a package has been deposited thereon by a platform.
22. In a conveyor system, an elevator provided with package carrying platforms, combined with a means arranged at the discharge side of the elevator-and comprising mutually intersecting the plane of travel of the platform and each provided with package feeding rollersfthe rollers of the outerof said portions-being provided with means for causing, the same to travel when a packag'e, has been deposited thereon by a platform, the latter means comprising endless travel ing chains connected to the rollers, :and means connected with said chains for actu-' ating the same intermittently.
23. In a conveyer system, an elevator rovided with package carrying platforms, combined with a. means -arranged at the discharge side' of the elevator and comprising two complementary portions mutually intersecting the plane of travel of the platform and each provided with package feeding rollers, the rollers of the outer of sald portions provided with means for causing the same to travel when a package has been deposited thereon by a platform, the latter in *anscomprising endless traveling chains connected to the rollers, and means connected with said -chains for actuating the same intermittently, having an actuating element which is intermittently operated by a movingpart of the elevator.

In a conveyor system, an elevator provided with a continuously movable endless t traveling means anda package carrier carried thereby, combined with a feeder or discharge-r which intersects the plane of movement of the package on said carrier, said fcedenor discliarger having a traveling mentnand means for moving said traveling element intermittently comprising an endless traveling means arranged alongside a run of the endless traveling means of the elevator/a device projecting from one of the endless traveling means into the plane of travel of a part movable with the other throughout a portion of its travel, for 1111-, parting intermittent motion to the endless traveling means of the actuating means of the'feeder or discharge]; and means for transmitting said movement to the traveling element of the feeder.

In a conveyer system, an elevator having a continuously-movable endless traveling element provided with package-carriers, anendless traveling chain arranged alongside a' runthereof and parallel therewith throughout a' portion of the length of the latter, projections extending from one of said parts into the plane of travel of a part movable with the other for imparting intermittent movement to said chain, a feeder or movement of the packages on thecarriers and is providedwitha and means for transmitting intermittent movement from the chain to the last-mentioned traveling element;

In a conveying system, an elevator comprising a vertically traveling member having package carrying platforms which are pivotally suspended therefrom and are provided with lateral openings, gravity conveyers arranged on opposite sides of said elevator with their ends spaced therefrom, a feed member and adischa'rge'member respectively arranged between the gravity conveyers and the elevator and projecting into the planes of said openings, each of said members having endless traveling package conveying rollers and means whereby said rollers are caused to' travel intermittently and to rotate while traveling, said means including connect-ions for giving traveling movement to the rollers'from a moving part of the'elevator.

In a conveying system, an elevator ber and a. discharging member respectively arranged between the gravity'conveyers and elevator, said parts being adapted to permit the platforms to pass and having two com plementary port-ions so arranged as mutually tosupport a package in the plane of travel of the platforms and respectively cooperating with the. forwardly and rearwardly projecting parts of the latter in the comprising a vertically traveling member transferof the packages, each of said por:
