MIRON (ll. TOUSLEY, OF MENDOTA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO DIEBOLD 85 KIENZLE,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it kl iown that I, MIRON G. TonsLEv, of Mendota, i the county oir- La Salle and State of Illinois, `ve invented a new and useful Improvemen in Safe-Lock Spindles, and I do hereby declar the following to be a full, clear, and exact des( 1iption thereof, which will enable others skillet in the art to which my invention appertains t make and use the same, reference being had o the accompanying drawing forming part oi' th s speciiication, in which- Figure is a transverse longitudinal section of a porti n oi1 the walls of a safe with my improvemen attached thereto, cutting the saine through t e center. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the spind on line a' Fig. 3 is a detached section oi' y portion ofthe key employed in turning the s indle, and Fig. lis a vertical lengt tudinal se ion oi' a portion of the safe-walls, with dial remo d, showing the manner of closing the aperture ithin which the key for turning' the spindle is ntroduced.
Similar tters oi'rei'erence indicate corresponding parts the several figures of the drawing.
rIhe nat re oi my invention consists in so constructing 1e key in connection with aloose plug' and the l Ak-spindle as to operate in combination, whe arranged as hereinafter described 5 also, in s arranging the inner portion of the spindle as o ignite a fuse secured therein when force is ap lied upon its outer end to drive the same inwr ld from the door, by which means an alarm is g 7en.
In the ccompanying drawing, A represents the dial, w rich may be made in the usual form. B is the y, the shank of which is secured to said dial 1 the ordinary manner. C is a steel plug, whic is secured within an annular cavity or apertur in the outer end of the spindle I). The outer vnd of said plug is provided, at opposite sides, 'ith longitudinal slots out obliquely across the nd, forming a wedge-shaped center. Into this s t I introduce the blade d of the key for turnin the same, said blade being' cut away or fork-shaied, forming in its end a recess approximati said wedge-shaped center in the end of the pluU I provide said plug with a longitudinal groov or channel, within which is secured a feathery, I), that engages with and takes into a corr Vponding groove or channel upon the inner side f spindle D, by which means said OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPINDLES FOR SAFE-LOCKS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,830, dated September l2, 1871.
Thus, should a blow be applied to the outer end of the plug' (by means of any instrument intro duced into the cavity for the key, when it is removed) in the attempt to force the same inward, the cap is brought against the solid end of the cavity in the spindle, exploding the same, which ignites the fuse, by which means an alarm is given and the plug discharged from the spindle. I provide the inner side of the sate-wall with an external screw-threaded disk, E, through which said spindle passes. Said disk has in its end an annular cavity or recess, forming a series of oblique and rectangular shoulders, h hf, which come in contact with and against corresponding shoulders 17 i upon the spindle, by which means the same is secured in the walls of the safe. Vhen the key with the dial is removed from the spindle I introduce into the keyhole a stopper, j, as shown in Fig. 4. Said stopper may be of cork or other like material, which will protect the fuse secured in the cavity of the spindle from the air or from ire. I at tach the shank of the spindle to the lock in the ordinary manner; but, as the same forms no part of my invention, a description thereof is not necessary to be herein fully given.
I am aware that spindles have been previously known and used which are secured to the wall ofthe safe by a screw-threaded disk having rectangular shoulders and of different general shape 5 but the rear of the shoulders is not properly secured, and their angles produce no expansion to the disk, s0 the thread may be stripped and the spindle driven by the concussion oi' heavy blows, while with my invention the oblique shoulders of the spindle expand the disk by the concussion of a blow and are secured, rendering the same more strong and reliable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of key B with its forked The above speciiication of my invention signed end, loose plug,` C with Wedge-shaped end, and by me this 29th day of October, A. D. 1870. spindle D, substantially as herein described. v MIRON G. TOUSLEY.
2. The plug C, provided with cap and fuse f A and g or their equivalents, in combination with Witnesses: the spindle D, substantially as herein described, H. CADY, and for the purpose set forth. L. W. RICHARDSON.
