The primary object of the invention is the` provision of a machine of this charactery wherein a blank of rubber material can be placed in the same so that on operating thel machine the material will be plaited for the formation of the bathing cap.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this character wherein the construction thereof is of novel formV to permit easy and quick operation. of the same and also to insure the uniform plaiting of the cap body when being made during the working of the machine.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

chine. Mounted centrally on the base is a column 13 formed with an enlarged circular work supportv 14 having a centralcircular depression or recess 15 in its upper face to provide concentrically thereof a flange 16 in which are pivoted the swinging plaiting members hereinafter fully described.
The flange 16 is formed at equidistances apart with slots 17 which are radially disposed and receive the inner vends of the swinging plaiting members comprising arms 18, the flange 16 being formed in its outer periphery with a continuous slot 19 for receiving the pivot wire 20 which is passed through the inner ends of the arms 18 for swingingly connecting the same to the support on which is adapted to beplaced the circular blank of rubber material to form the .body of the bathing cap, the arms 18 being moved for the plaiting of the material in a manner presently described.` Fixed in the cross head 12 centrally thereof in any suitable manner and depending therefrom is a hollow'stem 21 formed with a disk-like head 22, and on this stem 21 is slidably mounted a disk 28 formed with a collar 24 concentrically about the stem 21, the disk' 23 being fitted in its peripheral edge with stationary plaiting arms 25' which are arranged in spaced relation to each other an equal distance apart and depend concentri-l cally about the head 22 to coact with the arms 18 in a mannerpresently described.

Integral with or mounted in the sleeve at diametrically opposite points thereof are lugs 34 with which engage the limbs 35 of U-shaped bails 36 which are mounted for sliding movement through the base 10 and are bolted or otherwise connected to a link 37 which is pivotally connected to the inner end of a rocking lever 38 pivoted at 39 to a depending bearing 40 secured to the undery side of the base so that on the rocking of the lever 38 the sleeve 32 will be shifted for the raising of the arms 18 to bring the same into operative relation to the stationary arms 25 in the plaiting of the material for the body of the cap.
The sleeve 32 normally rests upon stop pins 41 fixed in the support 14 forthe work, and the sleeve is in this position when the arms18 are in a horizontal plane.
Mounted upon the arms 18 near the outer ends thereof are spring held jaw clips 42 each being formed with a split collar 43 adapted to embrace the arms 18, which is formed with a slot 44 to receive the ring 43 so that the clip 42 will not move longitudinally on the arm, and these clips 42 are adapted to engage the peripheral edge of the circular piece of material when placed upon the support 14, so that on the swinging of the arms 18 upwardly the material will be held for the action of the arms 18 and 25, which will form the plaits therein, the said plaits being made permanent on the subsequent application of the tape to the body of the cap.
Slidably mounted on the arms 18 are trip sleeves 45 which are adapted to ride onto the jaws of the clips 42 when the arms 18 have been swung to vertical position, so that the material engaged by the clips will be released, and to effect automatic movement of the sleeves 45 they have connected thereto pull cables 46, the same being connected to tension springs 47 which are suitably l mounted on the support 14, the sleeves 45 being normally disengaged from the clips 42, and on the raising of the arms 18 the springs 47 will become tensioned to automatically shift the sleeves 45 onto the jaws of the clips 42 for the automatic releasing of the material after the plaits have been formed therein.
In the operation of the machine, the circular piece of material is placed upon the support 14 when the arms 18 are in a horizontal plane, and the peripheral edge of this piece is engaged by the clips 42, whereupon the sleeve 32 is raised by operating the lever 38, forcing the arms 18 upwardly into vertical position, it being understood of course that the stationary arms 25 on 'the dislv are in lowered operative position so that these arms 18 and 25 will coperate with each other for the formation of plaits in the material. Now, after the plaits have been thus formed, the material is automatically released by freeing the clips 42 under the action of the collars 45, which are moved by the tensioning of the springs 47 when the said arms 18 have moved to vertical position. After the material has been released, the disk 23 is raised so that the tape can be fixed to the inner surface of the body of the cap to hold the plaits permanent, and thereafter the said arms 18 are permitted to be lowered to a horizontal plane for the subsequent application of the tape at the outer side of the body of the cap, thus producing a finished rubber bathing cap.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended eX- planation has been omitted.
W'hat is claimed is 1. A plaiting machine of the class described comprising a stationary member, a movable member, plaiting arms iiXed to the movable member, movable plaiting arms supported by the stationary member, means for shifting the movable plaiting arms into operative relation to the fixed plaiting arms, means for adjustably supporting the movable member, a work support formed on the stationary member', a frame for the stationary and movable members, and resilient clips on the movable plaiting arms.
2. A plaiting machine of the class described comprising a stationary member, a movable member, plaiting arms fixed to the movable member, movable plaiting arms supported by the stationary member, means for shifting the movable plaiting arms into operative relation to the fixed plaiting arms, means for adjustably supporting the movable member, a work support formed on the stationary member, a frame for the stationary and movable members, resilient clips on the movable plaiting arms, and means for automatically releasing the clips on the raising of the movable arms to vertical position.
