This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in vises, and has more particular reference to a device especially, but not necessarily designed for use during welding operation.
A primary object of the invention is to provide a vise of the character above men tioned which includes a work supporting clamp mounted-to swing on both a vertical and horizontal axis together with means for retaining the clamp in the position to which it may be swung upon either or both of the axes whereby the work will be retained in that position best suitable for expeditiously carryingout the Welding or other work as the case may be. v
With the above and numerous other objects in view, as will become more apparent, the invention resides in the novel combination', arrangement of parts, and details of construction hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended, reference being had during the course 01" thedescription to the drawings forming part of the specification, and wherein:

lVith reference more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that the vise comprises a pedestal, the same including a base block 1 having integral therewith a vertical tubular extension 2. 'Slida'ble in the extension 2 is a shank 3 that at its upper end has integral therewith a disk 4. Extending centrally through the disk 4: is a headed bolt 5 that has rotatably supported thereon a pair of disks 6 and 7 respectively. The disks 6 and 7 are disposed one to each side of the disk head 5,
and to the periphery of the disks 6 and 7, and disposed tangentially of the disks 6 and 7 is a disk 8 that is suitably welded or otherwise formed integral with the disks 6 and 7.
' The disk 8 has integral therewith a plurality of lateral, circumferentially spaced hook like lugs 9 that engage over the periphery of a rotatable disklO for retaining the latter disk parallel to the disk 8.
A substantially U-shaped clamp d'esignated generally by the reference character C includes a pair of spaced parallel co-exte'n-c sive legs 11 connected, at one end through the medium of a bight 12, the latter having formed integrally therew-i-tlra pair of spaced. vertically alined apertured ears or lugs'13.
The disk 10 has integral therewith and projecting axially therefrom .a lug or integral car 14 receivable between the ears or lugs 13. For securing the clamp C to the disk 8 there is provided-a bolt 15 extending through lugs 13 and lug 14, the bolt havingthe headed end thereof countersunk within one o f the cars 13, and a wing screw 15 threadedly engaging the free end of the bolt.
From the foregoing then it will be seen that by swinging the disks 6 and 7 about their pivots relative to the disk head 4, the clamp C maybe moved to any desired angle relative to the horizontal. -Suitablemeans are provided for retaining the clamp in a predetermined angular position to whic'hit :may be swung, said means including a substantially U-shaped retaining pin 16, The pin 16 has arelatively long leg 17 that is received in an axial bore 19 provided therefor in the bolt 5. The pin 16 also includes a relatively short leg 20 adapted to pass through an opening 21 provided therefor in the disk 7, which opening is adapted to aline with a selected opening of an annular series of openings 22 provided on the relatively fixed disk head i, the free end of the leg 20 finally being received in an opening 23 provided in the disk 7 in alinement with the opening 21. Thus the disks 6 and 7 will be retained against rotative movement relative to the fixed disk head a.
For retaining the leg 20 half through the openings 21, 23 and the particular opening 22, there is provided a coil spring 2 1 convoluted about the free end of the leg 17. The sprinq 24; is received within a counterbore 25 of the bolt 5 and the outer or free end of the spring impinges against a collar 26 suitably provided and retained on the leg 17 adjacent the free extremityof the leg.
By rotating the disk 10 relative to the disk 8, the clamp C may be disposed at any desired angle relative to the perpendicular through the medium of a retaining pin 27 forming part of a spring catch structure. The spring catch structure includes an open ended casing 28 welded or otherwise formed integrally with the disk 7 and extending diametrically of the disk parallel to, and at right angles to the pivot bolt 5.
The pin 27 is slidable in the bore 29 of the casing and at one end is adapted to be proj ected through a selected one of an annular series of holes 30 provided therefor in the disk 10, which holes 30 in turn are adapted to selectively register with a single hole provided for said one end of the'pin on the disk 8 in alinement with the casing 28.
Said one end of the pin 27 is normally projected outwardly of the casing at the corresponding end of the latter, through the medium of a coil spring 31 arranged within a counterbore 29 of the casing. The spring 31 impinges against the'inner end of the counterbore at one end of the spring and at the free end of the spring the same impinges against a collar 32 suitably fixed on the catch pin 27. At its opposite end, the pin 27 is provided with a lateral projection 33 operable within a slot 44 provided therefor in the wall of the casing 28.
The projection 23 acts in the nature of a handle for the catch pin 27 and also cooperates with the inner end of the slot to provide a stop for the pin.

' the clamp C, is a threaded shank 35 provided on one end with a ball like head adapted to be received in a suitable socket 3'? provided therefor inany desired type of chuck, such as the chuck 38 shown in the drawings.
The shanks 35 are arranged in longitudinal alinement, and support the chucks 38 in alinement one with another and with their workin or effective faces in confronting relation with respect to one another as suggested in Figure l.
Obviously by securing the shanks 35 relative to the legs 11, the chucks 28 can be moved toward or away from one another for accommodatin various sizes and types of work.
As before stated, the shank or rod 3 is adjustable longitudinally within the post 2, and for retaining the shank or rod 3 in a predetermined raised or lowered position relative to the post 2, there is provided a lever 39 pivoted intermediate its ends as at 40 between a pair of spaced parallel ears or lugs 41 projecting laterally from one side of the standard 2. Adj acent its upper end there is pivoted to the lover a dog 43 movable through a suitable lateral opening provided therefor in the post or standard 2. The inner free end of the dog is suitably beveled, and is adapted to engage a selected shoulder of a series of vertically spaced annular shoulders 44 provided on the shank or rod 3.
The shoulders 4 may be formed on the rod or shank 3 in any suitable manner, but preferably as shown in the drawings whereby to provide between adjacent shoulders cylindrical outer surfaces respectively merging into conical surfaces disposed above the cylindrical surfaces thus providing alternating c3 lindrical and conical surfaces contacting -ith the beveled end of dog 4.3.
A coil spring as is interposed between the lever 39 and the wall of the standard or post 2 below the pivot of the lever, the spring normally urging the free end of the lever away from the post, consequently normally urging the inner beveled end of the dog e 2 inwardly of the post or standard 2.
Thus it will be seen, that to raise the shank or rod 3 the same may be pulled upwardly and outwardly of the standard 2, and the cylindrical surfaces of the shank or rod 3 will contact with the beveled inner end of the dog for urging the same outwardly thus rocking the lever about its pivot and against the action of spring l5. When the rod or shank 3 is in its desired raised position, a conical surface will be disposed opposite the lateral opening of the standard or post whereby the free beveled end of the dog may move inwardly of the post to engage an adjacent uppermost shoulder 44 to thereby retain the rod or shank 3 in its raised position.
To lower the shank or rod 3, the lever o9 is rocked about its pivot against the action of spring 45 inwardly toward the post thus moving the b veled inner end of the dog outwardly or radially with respect to the rod and out of engagement with the shoulder of the rod whereby the latter is then free to slide by gravity downwardly and inwardly of the post or standard.
In actual practice two of such vise structures as described in detail, are used for supporting the work and these vise structures are mounted on a suitable support or bench provided therefor, and are adapted to be mounted on the bench for movement toward and away from one another.
The support or bench for the vise structure comprises a pair of end posts or bars 46 each of which are preferably in the nature of I beams. The end members or I beams 46 rise from a suitable base structure designated generally by the reference character 4?. At their upper ends the I beams 46 are connected by a pair of horizontal channel bars 48. lhese channel bars are suitably bolted or otherwise secured as at 49 to the vertical of the I beams on opposite sides of the I beams.
Each of the vise structures, has its base 1 resting on the upper flanges of the channel bars 48 and the base is provided with a depending lug or projection 50 that extends downwardly between the channel bars. A clamping block 51 engages the lower flanges of the channel bars 48 and said block 51 is provided with a vertical upwardly projecting extension 52 that is received between the channel bars 48. The clamping block 51 has extending vertically therethrough a bolt 53 the squared end of which is countersunk within a squared counter bore of the block as at 54'to prevent rotation of the bolt relative to the block.
The upper end of the bolt 53 extends through a suitable vertically disposed bore provided therefor in the base 1, and threadedly engaged with the uppermost end of the bolt is a wing nut 55.
Manifestly by screwing the wing nut 55 downwardly of the bolt 53, the block 52 and base 1 are urged tightly against the flanges of the channel bars 48 whereby the vise structure is secured in position on the bench or work table against casual movement relative thereto.
It will also be apparent, that by loosening the wing nut-s 55, the vise structures may be moved longitudinally of the channel bars 48 toward or away from one another for supporting work of various lengths.
It is thought that from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings a clear understanding of the construction, utility, advantage and purpose of an invention of this character willbe had by those skilled in the art without a more detailed description.
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible to changes,modifications and improvements coming within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described by invention, what I claim as new is: V
1. In a device of the character described, a
pair of telescoping members, a disk pivotally mounted on one of said members, a second disk carried by the first-mentioned disk tangential to the latter,and mounted for rotation relative to the first mentioned disk, means for supporting said second disk from the first mentioned disk,- and a vise clamp carried by the second disk for movement relative to said second disk. a
2. In a vase of the character described, a relatively fixed disk, a second disk movable on an arc concentrically of said fixed disk, apair of members carried by said seconddisk and straddling said fixed disk, a pivot bolt carried by said fixed diskand supporting said members, means engageable with said members and said fixed disks for retaining said movable disks in predetermined rotative position relative tosaid-fixed disk,a clamp memher, and means for supporting said clamp member on said second disk for movement relative to said second disk about an axis at right angles to said pivot bolt, to assume a predetermined angular position relative to the l1oriz0ntal,and upon a second axis at right angles to the axes of said pivot bolt to assume an angular position relative to the perpendicular.
3. In a vise of the character described, a pair of telescoping members, means for retaining said members in adjusted position relative to one another, afixed disk carried by one of said members, a pair of disks disposed one to each side of the fixed disk, a pivot bolt common to said disks of said pair and extending through said disk, a fourth disk tangential to the first mentioned disks and integral with the disks of said pair of disks, means cooperable with said first mentioned disks, and the fixed disk of said pair for retaining the latter'disks in predetermined rotative position relative to said fixed disk, a clamp supporting disks rotatably mounted on said fourth disk, means for rotatably supporting said clamp carrying disk for rotative movement relative to said fourth disks, means for retaining said clamp carrying disk in predetermined rotativeposition relative to said fourth disk, and a vise clamp pivotally mounted on said clamp carrying disk.
4. In a device of the character described, tne combination of a pair of parallel bars, a pedestal formed on said bars for longitudinal movement thereof, means for clamping said pedestal on said bars against casual movement relative thereto, said pedestal including a vertically disposed post, a member longitudinally adjustable relative to said post, a vise clamp, means for mounting saidclamp on the upper end of said last men tioned member, said last mentioned means in- V cluding a pair of members movable simultaneously about a substantially horizontal pivot, and one of said members being mov-" able relative to the other of said members on a pivot at substantially right angles to the first mentioned pivot, and means pivotally connecting said vise clamp to said one memher for swinging movement onv an axis at right angles to the second mentioned axis.

In a device'of the character described, the combination of a pair of parallel bars, a pedestal formed on said bars for longitudinal movement thereof, means for clamping said pedestal on said bars against casual movement relative thereto, said pedestal including a vertically disposed post, a member longitudinally adjustable relative to said post, a vise clamp, means for mounting said clamp on the upper end of said last mentioned memher, said last mentioned means including a pair of members movable simultaneously about a substantially horizontal pivot, and
one of said members being movable relative to the other of said members on a pivot at substantially right angles to the first mentioned pivot, and means pivotally connecting said vise clamp to said one member for swinging movement on an axis at right angles to the second mentioned axis, and said clamp comprising a pair of relatively movable opposed cooperating clamping chucks, and means for adjusting said chucks relative to one another,
6. A vise of the character described comprising in combination a rotatably mounted disk, a second disk integral with and extend ing tangential to the first disk, a third disk rotatably supported on the second disk, and a clamping device pivotally mounted on said third disk. 7

A vise of the character described comprising in combination a rotatably mounted disk, a second disk integral with and extend ing tangential to the first disk, a third disk rotatably supported on the second disk, a clamping device pivotally mounted on said third disk, means for securing the first mentioned disk at the desired adjustment, and said second and third disks provided with cooperating means for retaining the third disk at the desired adjustment.
