Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. DOLLARI), a citizen of the United States, residing at Attica, in the county of Harper and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to wrenches, and aimsto provide'a novel and improved wrench adapted especially for re# moving and applying the axle nuts of wagons, buggies, and other vehicles, whereby a nut can bepunscrewed andremoved without danger of it being dropped, or the hands becoming greasy or dirty, the nut being readily replaced.
It is the object of the invention tov provide a wrench of the nature indicated which is comparatively simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, which has novel means for clamping the nut, and which is convenient, practical and efficient in use.
With the foregoingv and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts. and in the details of construction hereinafter` described andv claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side 'elevation of the im-l proved wrench, portions being shown in section and others being broken away. Fig. 2

In carrying out the invention, there is provided a plate 1 forming part of a casting or forging, and which carries the nut socket 2. Said nut socket embodies the three walls 3 and 4 which are preferably integral with the plate 1, and which are U-shaped in section, as seen in Fig. 2. The fourth wall of the socket 2 embodies a plate or j aw5 tothe inner side of which is secured a transverse bar or strip 6 having its terminals formed into t'runnions 7 which are pivoted through the walls 4' adjacent ythe edges thereof and betweenf-the mouth of thejsocket and plate 1. JThe plate 5 is thus mounted for rocking or oscillatory movement, to provide means for clamping the nut within the socket.
Oneend of the plate 1 has,- an angularly extending flange or lip 8 andra screw 9 is threaded through the flange 3 and wall 3 adjacent theplate 1 and projects through the* Isocket adjacent the plate 1, the shank ofthe screw 9 having a suitable handle 10 remote from the plate 1,1while the screw is provided with a reduced portiony 11 adjacent its other end and received by an open slot 12with which the plate 5 is provided adjacentthe platel. yThis screw 9 is employed for adjusting the plate or jaw 5, since when the screw 9 is rotated, the end of the plate 5 is moved therewith longitudinally of the `'plate 1.
The inner end of the plate 1, 'remote from the iiange 8, .has a longitudinally projecting shank 13 projecting away from the screw 9, and said shank has a handle 14 at its free end. Riveted or otherwise secured to the plate 1 centrally of the socket 2 is a perpendicular stem 15 upon which is mounted a wooden or equivalent handle 16.
To apply the wrench to a nut, the screw 9 is rotated to bring the plate 5 approximately parallel with the wall 3, and the wrench or tool can then be manipulated by the handle 16 for slipping the socket onto the nut, after which thescrew 9 is rotated tol move the corresponding end of the plate -5 away from the wall 3, as seen in Fig. 1,
whereby the outer end of the plate or lever 5 is moved or swung toward the wall 3, to clamp the nut between the plate 5 and wall 3, said plate and wall providing jaws for gripping the nut tightly within the socket. The handles 10 and 14 can then be used for rotating the wrench to unscrew the nut, and when the nut is detached, it will be held tightly within the socket, to prevent the nut being dropped in the dirt or lost. It is unnecessary to handle the nut, thereby eliminating getting the hands greasy replaced and screwed home,

A wrench embodying a plate having a socket, said socket being composed of three walls of U-shape united with said plate and a fourth wall pivotally mounted between a pair of theA first mentioned walls, and means extending through the other of the first mentioned walls for swinging th'e last mentioned wall to clamp a nut -within the socket.
2. A wrench embodying a plate having a socket, said socket being composed of three walls of U-shape united with said plate and a fourth wall pivotally mounted between a pair of the aforesaid' walls, the last mentioned wall being pivoted between its ends, and means engaged through the other of the first mentioned walls adjacent the plate for 4swinging the respective end of the last mentioned wall. 3. A wrench embodying a plate having a socket, said socket being composed of three walls of U-shape united with said plate and a fourth wall pivotally mounted between a pair of the aforesaid walls, the last mentioned wall being pivoted between its ends, and a screw engaged through the other of the first mentioned walls and engaged with that end of the fourth wall adjacent said plate.
4. A wrench embodying a plate having a nut socket, said socket being composed of three walls of U-shape united with said plate and a fourth wall pivotally mounted between its ends between a pair of the aforesaid walls, the plate having a ange at one end and handle member at its other end, a screw extending through said flange and one of the first mentioned walls and threadedly engaging o-ne of them, one end of said screw being connected with that end of the last mentioned wall nearest the plate.
5. A wrench embodying a plate having a nut socket, said socket being composed of three walls of U-shape united with said plate and a fourth wall trunnioned between a pair of the first mentioned walls, the last mentioned wall being trunnioned between its ends and that end thereof nearest the plate having an open slot, one end of the plate having a flange, a screw extending through one of the first mentioned walls and said flange and threadedly engaging one of them, the screw having a reduced portion received by said slot, the other end of the plate having a shank, said shank and screw having remote handles, and a handle carried by the plate adjacent the socket.
