PATENT OFFIoE.
HENRY SAWYER, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUTTING UP POWDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 118,819, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SAVVYER, ofUhelsea, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Putting up Powders in Boxes; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which Figure 1 denotes a vertical section of a box filled with a material in powder and prepared in accordance with my invention.
The said invention has reference to that for which Letters Patent No. 41,097, dated January 5, 1864, and reissued October 1, 1867, have been granted to me. In my said patent there is described a cylindrical box to contain the powdered article, such. box being represented as provided at one end with a cover, and at the opposite one with a series of delivery-holes, having a seal or wafer of wax, or of glutinous matter or varnish, arranged over them and upon the outside surface of the said end; the same being so as to form across each hole, so as to seal it, a thin film or diaphragm, easily broken away or punctured, when it maybe desirable so to do, by means of a pin or other suitable instrument, in order to enable the contents of the box or part thereof to be discharged through the punctures or holes. I have found that although the sealing or varnish, when placed on the outside surface of the punc tured end or part of the box, will seal the holes,
it, by exposure during transportation or hand-' ling, is apt to be broken off, so as to open one or more of the holes, and thereby expose the box to leakage or waste of the powder.
In carrying out my present invention I apply the sealing to the inner side of the end or perforated pait of the box and across the holes; or I apply it both on the inner and outer surfaces of the perforated part and across the holes. By so doing the sealing within the box will be con1- pletely protected from injury and will hold intact the sealing of the holes. By also applying the sealing or varnish on the outside surface and across the holes a thorough filling of them may be attained, any shrinkage or cracking of the film of any hole being estopped by the external layer.
In the drawing, A denotes the body of the box, and B the cover perforated with holes. (t denotes the inner layer of sealing, and b the outer layer thereof.
I do not herein claim the perforated and seal ed package or case, made as set forth in my said patcut; but
What I claim as my present invention is An improvement in the arrangement of the sealing of the perforated package or box, such consisting either in arranging it on the inner surface of the perforated part and across the perforations, or of so arranging it and also applying a layer of it on the outer surface of the part perforated and across the perforations, all being substantially as set forth.
Witnesses: HENRY SAWYER.
