BUILDING C(JNSTRUGTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 2@, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD KING CHAP- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Building Constructions, of which the. following is a specification.
This invention relates to building constructions and more particularly to that class of such constructions essentially adapted for building of arches and flooring of plastic and tile formed in situ and provided with means for supporting wooden flooring.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a building construction of the character set forth essentially adapted for use in building of the reinforced concrete type in which the main supports are molded in place and the arch or floor construction built between and supported thereby.
A further object is to provide means whereby the building of the arch construction may be facilitated and the supports provided with means for supporting wooden flooring above the plastic arch construction, the molded main supports and the tiling extending between the same affording, as will be seen, fireproof protection.
A still further object of this invention is to construct an arch or floor construction of the class described with provision therein for housing electric-conduits, piping or the like within a free space in order that such piping may be readily accessible for repair.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as will from time to time appear this invention consists in the peculiar arrangement and construction of the various structural elements as hereinafter described and more particularly set forth in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts wherever used, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a single arch span; Fig. 2 is a section through the span and one side wall support; Fig. 3 is a modified form of support and Fig. 1 is a further modification of the support construction.
5 designates a concrete wall or column formed in any suitable manner during the building operation, in position. Each one Of these Walls or Columns supports a beam 5, having a lateral extension 6 on both sides thereof. A plurality of reinforcing elements 7 extend longitudinally of the beams along the line of the extension in order to give added strength thereto.
Above the extension the beam 5' is of the usual width for a suitable distance when the same is narrowed to form shoulders 88 adapted to support wooden headers 9-4) held thereon oy tie rods 10--1O passed through the beams 5 and sunporting strips 1111 adjacent the headers 99. Upon the strips 11 11 are placed transverse rafters 1212 adapted to receive wooden flooring 13 of the usual type which extends over the beams 5-5 and is supported thereon by top plates 14-l lhaving cross plates 15-15 corresponding in position to the rafters 12.
The side wall or column construction is the same on one side as the central beam construction. Adapted to be supported by the projection 6 upon either side of the interior beams 5, and the inner wall of the outside beam 5 are tiling or other suitable plastic composition members 16, the mem ber adjacent the beam being provided with a projection 11 adapted to engage the extension 6 and to be supported thereby, the inner members 16 being of the usual keystone arch form. Between the top of the member 16 and the base of the cross rafter 12 is left an open space 18 which is adapted for the reception of electric-conduits, heating piping, sewerage and casing piping, or the like. In order to support these piping units in place a tie rod 19 extends from the side beam above the members 16 through the inner beams and across the open space 18, forming a rest for the piping units contained therein and acting as a transverse anchor for the structure.
In the construction shown in Fig. 8 the beam 5 is molded to present the external rounded projections 20, 20, and the adjacent tiling members 21 are provided with convex portions 22 adapted to engage and incase the projections 20, the remainder of the arch and floor supporting construction being identical with that heretofore described.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the interior beams 5 are molded with concaved indentations 23, 23, and the adjacent tiles 2 1, 2 1 provided with convex extensions 25, 25, adapted to be inserted within, the indentations 23, the remainder of the arch and floor supporting construction being identical with that heretofore described.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention could be made, without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
.VVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a
1. Building constructions of the character described, comprising walls or columns, beams supported by said walls or columns and formed with ledges on their opposing faces, a series of tiling units supported on the lowermost of said ledges and bridging the space between the beams, and floor attaching members supported on the uppermost of said ledges, whereby the tiling and flooring are disposed in spaced apart relation and the flooring protected from fire.
2. Building constructions of the character described, comprising walls or columns, beams supported by said walls or columns and formed with ledges on their opposing faces, a series of tiling units supported on the lowermost of said ledges and bridging the space between the beams, floor attaching members supported on the uppermost of said ledges, and means for holding said floor supporting members in place.
3. Building constructions of the character described, comprising walls or columns, beams supported by said walls or columns and formed with ledges on their opposing faces, a series of tiling units supported on the lowermost of said ledges and bridging the space between the beams, floor attaching members supported 011 the uppermost of said ledges, means for holding said floor attaching members in place, and a series of tie rods passing through said beams and through the space above the tiling to prevent lateral movement of said beams, said last referred to means being adapted to act as a support for the piping units extending through said space.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HOWARD KING CHAPMAN.
