Description

B. A. OLSON & O..A. BERG.
KNIFE SHARPENER. APPLICATION FILED AUG-2.1915.
v Mafia/@3069; migmy BERT A. OLSON, MAYWOOI), AND OSCAR A. BERG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
KNIFE-SIIARPENER.
Application filed August 2, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BERT A. OLSON and Oscar: A. BERG, subjects of the King of Sweden, and residents of the city of Maywood, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, and of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in knife sharpeners and has for its object the production of a device of this character especially designed for use as a domestic article which will be of durable and economical construction, one through the medium of which sharpening of knives may be readily and expeditiously effected and one which will be highly efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which-.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a knife sharpener embodying the invention, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device, Fig. 3 is a section taken on line m-w of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line y-y of Fig. 3.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises an elongated cylindrical body 1 of wood which is formed at one end to constitute a handle 2. The opposite end of said body is rounded or spherically formed in order to adapt the same to serve as a rest to engage against a table top or the like in the employment of the device.
Formed in one side of the body 1 adjacent the end 3 is a rearwardly opening slot 4: which is inclined slightly to the longitudinal axis of said body, said slot being of a width adapting the same to accommodate a knife blade which may be drawn therethrough. Also formed at the side of body 1 is a semicircular recess 5 which intersects the slot 4, said recess 5 being adapted to accommodate sharpening blades 6 which are arranged in crossed relation as shown in order to form a \I-slot between the upper ends thereof for Specification of Letters Patent.

engagement with the cutting edge of a knife blade in drawing the latter through slot 4:. These sharpening blades 6 are formed of hardened steel, being adapted to readily and easily cut the sides of the knife blade drawn through the slot 4 in order to sharpen the knife blade as will be readily understood. The blades 6 are securely anchored in position by means of an anchoring material 7, preferably Babbitt metal which is poured into the recess 5 so as to engage with the portions of said blades not registering with the slot 4. This method of sharpening of the blades is very effective and may be done at an exceedingly low cost.
In using the device the same is held in one hand with the hand clasping the handle 2. The end 3 is then rested upon a suitable support such as a table top so that the device is slightly inclined toward the operator. The knife blade is then drawn through the slot 4: so that the cutting edge of said blade contacts with the sharpening blades 6.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A knife sharpener comprising a body having a slot therein adapted to permit of the drawing of a knife blade therethrough; a pair of sharpening blades mounted in said body in operative relation with said slot, said body being provided with a recess intersecting said slot for the reception of said blades; and anchoring material introduced into said recess for securely holding said blades, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
