ImproVement in Bed Bottoms.
No. 118,804. Patented Sap-12,1871.
UNITED STATES SAMUEL HOBBS, or WILMOT, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,804, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Homes, of Wilmot, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Bed-Bottom; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a top view of a bedstead provided with my improved bed-bottom; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section of the same; Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the bed bottom separate, looking upward.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
The natine of my invention consists in particulars of construction and arrangement for purposes as hereinafter set forth.
The bed-botto1n is constructed with end-frames B B,which slide into and are supported inside of a bedstead, A, at the ends thereof; and the ends of the slats O G of the bottom are supported in these end frames. Each frame is composed of two vertical posts, I) b, which are connected by a rail, 0, at the bottom, a top rail, d, and a side rail or bar, f, between the other two rails. The bot tom rail 0 is fixed to the posts; but the top rail (1 terminates in tenons, which enter and rest in notches in the upper ends of the posts I) b and are retained therein by pins 9 g or their equivalent, so that the rail can be easily removed and replaced. Betweenthese top and bottom rails are secured vertical guide-rods h h at uniform distances apart, equal to the required distances between the centers of the parallel slats O G; and on these guide-rods are located coiled or equivalent springs it, to give elastic support to the ends of the slats, which are preferably forked or notched, as at l 1, so as to embrace the guide-rods or oblong holes in the slats may be employed instead of the notches, so as to allow one end of the slat to freely play up and down, independent of the other end, without binding on the guiderods. Over the springs and under the slats are respectively located, on the guide-rods, washers or disk-plates m m, which serve the purpose of keeping the springs in position without wearing or impeding the motions of the slats up an d down, and of preventing creaking. The slats, when not pressed down by the occupants of the bed, are held pressed upward by the springs against the upper rail (1. The middle rail or bar f is secured to the inner side of the frame out of the way of the springs on the guide-rods, and at such a height as to limit the descent of the slats to the required extent and then give firm support, while allowing suflicient play to give full eflect to the springs. This cross-bar or rail, as shown in the drawing, also serves to support the bed-bottom in the bedstead, resting on blocks or projecting pieces a a secured to the side rails of the bedstead.
This bed-bottom is very efficient and convenient, and every part can be removed or separated with great facility.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bed-bottom, composed of the end frames 13 B, constructed substantially as herein described, in combination with the springs t i, washers or plates m m, and slats O O, substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
SAMUEL HOBBS.
