TANK-STEAMER.
isten.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD SAX'roN lVHrrE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at the Walker Shipyard, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tank-Steamers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tank steamers such as are used for carrying liquids in bulk and its object is to furnish a vessel of simple and strong construction in which as much space as possible shall be available for carrying the cargo.
The accompanying drawing shows a vessel constructed according to my invention, only such parts as relate to the invention being depicted and described.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section and Fig. 2 a hold plan. Fig. 3 shows part of Fig. 2 to an enlarged scale and Figs. 4 and 5 are part transverse and longitudinal sections also to an enlarged scale.
a are two longitudinal liquid tight girders in the bottom of the ship, one on either side of the center line, b transverse girders or floors extending from one longitudinal girder to the other at suitable intervals and c is a central longitudinal keelson connected to the floors. (Z are shelves or plates secured liquid tight to the girders a and c are the cylindrical walls of the tanks. 7 are plates riveted to the girders and floors. Each cylindrical tank is thus in communication with a rectangular space extending right down to the bottom of the ship and bounded by the two longitudinal girders Specification of Letters Patent.

and by two transverse girders. tral partitions and h side partitions which divide the space above the plates cl and f not occupied by the cylindrical tanks into auxiliary tanks 2' which may be used for carrying liquid or other cargo. Where the ship narrows toward the bows short longitudinal girders j, nearer the middle line of the ship than are the girders a, support the forward tank ]c.
What I claim is 1. In a tank steamer, the combination of a pair of longitudinal girders, a plurality of transverse girders forming liquid receptacles between them, a plurality of bottomless tanks supported by the longitudinal and transverse girders and opening into said receptacles, shelves connected to the longitudinal girders and to the parts of the tanks which overlap such longitudinal girders and plates secured to the longitudinal and transverse girders and to the tanks.
2. In a tank steamer, the combination of a pair of longitudinal girders, a plurality of transverse girders forming liquid receptacles between them, a plurality of bottomless tanks supported by the longitudinal and transverse girders and opening into said receptacles, shelves connected to the longi tudinal girders and to the parts of the tanks which overlap such longitudinal girders, plates secured to the longitudinal and transverse girders and to the tanks, vertical. central partitions between the tanks and vertical transverse partitions between the tanks and the sides of the ship.
