To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, HARRY Y. Anrrs'rnone,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Pasting Mechanisms; and T do hereby delltl clarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrapping machines, and refers more specifically to a pasting mechanism for apnecessary to an understanding of the invenall tion are herein described, reference being made to said prior application for a full disclosure of the wrapping mechanism proper. The chief object of the invention is to provide a paste-applying mechanism for wrapping and similar machines which will operate at high speed to apply paste evenly to the area to be pasted, and without liability of moving the wrapper or sheet to receive the paste.
Other objects of the invention are to im prove the means for transferring the paste from the paste pot to the paste applying devices, and
paste pot.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly to other improvements in the pointed out in the appended claims.

. As shown in the drawings, 10 designates a magazine in which are stacked the gums Z) to be wrapped. The gums are forced from the bottom of the magazine by a plunger ll through a guide way 12 and through a wrapper slot or channel 15. The gum is delivered to said slot or channel together with a wrapper 0 which is fed into the wrapper recess 13 across the mouth of said slot by means i of a paper feed and cutting mechanism de ignated as a whole,.by 16. The paper is wrapped on three sides of the gum while paming through the slot 15 and is delivered by the final stroke of the plunger into the upper notch l? of a rotative wrapper head 18. Upon retraction of the plunger 11 the said head 18 .is rotated through 180 degrees of a circle, thereby carrying the partially wrapped gum to the plane of the secondary wrapper slot 19. The partially wrapped gum is forced from the lower pocket of the wrapper head 18 by a second plunger 21 into and through thesecondary folding slot or channel 19 where the terminal side flap of the wrapper is folded upon the package. When passing through said secondary slot or channel the end fiapsof the wrapper are folded about the gum in the manner de scribed in my aforesaid prior application.

After the label or outer wrapper has been partially applied to the gum, and the secondary wrapper head has been turned 180 degrees to direct a partially wrapped package into the tertiary folding slot, the trailing 'e against a pasting face-34 on the upstandi1i bracket 35. so that when the trailing margin of the its other end in a bracket or bearing 38 of the machine frame. .Mounted on the front end of the said shaft 37 is a collar 40. Extending through said collar and through the shaft is a rod or spindle 41, the said rod ex- 40 tending beyond said collar to constitute a bearing for the axially apertured paste ap-' plying arm 42. The said rod or spindle 41 is headed at its upper end to engage the outer end of the paste applying arm to hold 45 it thereon, and is detachably fixed in the the rod 41, to revolve said paste applying arm in a vertical plane about the axis of the shaft 37; the engagement of said gear on the paste applying arm with the stationary gear 51 causing the arm to simultaneously rotate about its own longitudinal axis. The
result of this arrangement is to give the paste applying member 46 aplanetary movement. The member 46 is brought into contact with a paste bearing surface in one part of its orbit or path of travel-to receive paste and in another part of its orbit is brought into contact with the wrapper so as to transfer the paste to the wrapper. From the construction described, it will be seen that the paste applying member has a rolling contact with the wrapper, as distinguished from a wiping contact. This construction pos-,
sesses the important advantage of avoiding the tendency of the paste applying member to shift or displace the wrapper when transferring the paste thereto, such as would occur if the said member passed with a wiping contact across the face of the wrapper.
The path of the paste applying member across the wrapper is a curved or arcuate path. In order to avoid applying paste to the pasting face 34, when no wrapper is present, I may provide said pasting face with a recess or depression 54 opposite to the path of the paste applying member 46 as it travels across the pasting face.
The means for transferring the paste to the paste applying member comprises a rotative disk 56 located beneath the shaft 37 and having one face substantially in the plane of the pasting face. Said disk rotates in the body of fluid paste contained in a paste pot 57,and is mounted to rotate on a shaft 58 collar 40 so that it may be endwise removed therefrom to permit the removal of the paste applying arm. As herein shown, this attachment is effected by means of a screw 45 which is screw-threaded in the collar and engages at its inner end an annular socket in the rod'41. The said paste applying arm is provided at its outer end with a paste applying projection or member 46 which is adapt face 3.4 in

The upper wall of the paste pot is provided with an opening through which the disk extends, and is provided also at one side of said opening with a guard or hood 60 "having a curved lip 61 which partially overlaps the periphery of the disk. Said top wall is hinged at 63 to one side of the paste pot so that the same may be swung upwardly to charge the paste pot, and the swinging wall is locked in position by means of a swinging or hinged locking latch 65 hinged to thepaste pot wall and adapted to be swung upwardly into the notched portion 66 of the said swinging top .wall.
68 designates a scraper arranged to scrape the excess paste from the rising side of the disk. Said scraper is carried by the upper end of'an arm 70 which is hinged at 71 to the lower side of the paste pot. The said scraper is pressed toward the disk by means v of a spring 72 that surrounds a rod 73 which is rotated it serves, by reason of its connection with the paste applying arm, through exten s through said arm 70 and into the ad acent wall of the paste pot, the spring .being, interposed between said arm and a shoulder at the outer end of said rod. The movement of the scraper toward the disk is limited by a screw-threaded stop 75 which is screw-threaded through the arm 70 and bears against the adjacent wall of the paste pot, and said screw-threaded stop is locked in place by a lock nut 76, Fig. 5, that is screw-threaded to the stop and bears against the outer face of said arm 70. .The said paste disk shaft is geared to the paste applying arm shaft by means of the pinion 78 on the latter shaft which meshes with the gear wheel 79 on the paste disk shaft. The said paste applying arm shaft is driven from a shaft 81 mounted in the frame of the machine through the medium of a beveled pinion 82 on said latter shaft which meshes with one face of a double beveled pinion 83 carried by a short vertical shaft 84 that is mounted in bearings carried by the machine frame. The other gear face of the double pinion meshes with a pinion 86 fixed to the paste applying arm shaft 37.
In order to prevent the paste applied to the trailing margin of the wrapper from objectionably smearing the under side of the secondary Wrapper head 22, when the packages are forced from the pockets thereof into the tertiary folding slot 24, the sides of the said wrapper head at the end openings of the pockets are depressed so as to leave laterally separated ribs or projections 90, as best shown in Fig. 6. These ribs or pro- JQClZlOIlS are made with sharp or narrow edges so that paste that may adhere thereto, as the pasted flap wipes over the same, will be so small as to be negligible. A paste applying mechanism comprising means for positioning an article to which paste is to be applied, a paste applying member mounted to revolve about an axis in a path carrying it past and into contact with said article, means for revolving said member, and means for rotating said member about another axis to cause it to roll on the surface of said article to apply paste thereto.

6. A paste-applying mechanism comprising a revoluble arm which is rotatable on its axis, means to revolve said arm and means to rotate the arm comprising a gear on the arm concentric to its axis of rotation and a fixed gear with which the first gear meshes.

A paste-applying mechanism comprising a rotatable shaft, means to rotate said shaft, a bearing rod extending transversely through said shaft, an elongated paste-applying arm mounted on said rod for rotation about the axis of said rod and provided at its outer end with a paste-applying member, means to rotate said arm about said axis during the rotation of said shaft and the consequent revolution of the arm, and
means for supplying paste to the said memshaft, a bearing rod extending transversely through said shaft, an elongated paste-applying arm mounted on said rod for rotation about the axis of said rod and provided at its outer end with a paste-applying member, a gear fast with said arm, a stationary gear with which the first gear meshes, a paste-pot and a transfer disk rotatable therein and projecting therefrom in contact with which said paste-applying member is arranged to roll.
