To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK .M. Pn'rnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York and WARREN H. HUNGERFORD, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, Cook county, in the State of I linois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Applying Labels, Seals, and the like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in machines for applying labels, seals and the like to packages, cartons, containers or other objects having a plurality of walls or sides arranged at an angle to each other.
Further said invention relates to improvements in packaging machinery, and the same has for its object more particularly to rovide a simple, eflicient and reliable mac ine for sealing cartons and the like having a cover or closing flap.
Further said invention has for its object to provide a machine for securing the hinged cover or flap of a carton to the body or receptacle portion thereof.
Further said invention has for its object to provide a machine for securing the cover or closing flap of a carton by means of a sealing member which partly engages the cover or closing flap adjacent to its edge, and one of the side walls of the carton or receptacle adjacent to its upper edge.
Further said invention has for its object to provide a machine in which the sealing members are supported in an open base receptacle, from which the same are individually withdrawn, and then moistened and conveyed to the ackage to be sealed, and said sealing mem ber then pressed artly into engagement with the cover or sealin flap of the carton and with the side wall of the carton adjacent to the free edge of said cover or sealing flap. Other objects will in part be obvious and art be pointed out hereinafter.
o the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends our invention consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings we have shown a portion of a machine for closing cartons and the like of the general construction shown, described and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 1,043,863, dated November 12, 1912 granted to Frank M. Peters and Henry H. Hungerford for Machine for wrapping ackages.
In said drawings 10 (i esignates a side or longitudinal frame member, 11 a transverse support, and 12 a longitudinal shaft which is suitably geared to a driving shaft not shown. pon said longitudinal shaft 12 is fixed a cam disk 14 having similar cam grooves 15 in its opposite faces arranged in reversed relation. It will be understood that the mechanism shown to the left of the broken vertical line 00-50 represents one side or half of the machine, and that the'counter part thereof is arranged at the other side of and to the right of said line.
Upon the longitudnal frame member 10 and transverse support 11 is arranged a longitudinal guide 16 through which the packages or cartons are fed. The said guide 16 is provided in the outer of its vertical walls with a recess or cut-out portion 17, and upon the upper edges of said guide 16, at each side of said recess 17, are secured the ends of transverse supports 18, upon which is mounted a paste receptacle 19 having arms 20 extending upwardly therefrom in which is revolubly mounted a shaft 21 carrying a distributing roll 22, contacting with a pick-up roll '23 extending into said paste receptacle 19 and mounted upon a shaft 24 having its opposite ends supported in the walls of said paste receptacle 19. 25 denotes a gear fixed upon one end of the distributing roll shaft 21, and meshing with a similar gear 26 fixed upon the corresponding end of the pick-up roll shaft 24.
27 denotes a paste roll mounted upon a shaft 28 having its ends supported in the outer ends of arms 29 whose inner ends are pivotally secured to the sides of the paste receptacle supports 18. 'lhe said paste roll 27 contacts with the distrlbuting roll 22, and the shaft 28, upon which it is mounted, is provided at one of its outer ends with a gear 30 adapted to mesh with the ear 25 on the distributing roll shaft 21. 0' 1mpart motion to the gears 26, 25, 30 and the1r respective rolls 23, 22 and 27, the shaft 24 of the pick-up roll 23 is provided with a sprocket wheel 31 connected by a chain belt 32 with a sprocket wheel 33 fixed upon a counter-shaft 34 supported in bearings 35 depending from the package or carton gulde 16.' Upon said counter shaft 34 1s also fixed a second sprocket wheel 36 connected by a chain belt 37 with a larger sprocket wheel 38 fixed upon the driven shaft 12 of the machine.
39 denotes a link having its upper end pivotally secured to one of the arms 29 supportlng the paste roll 27, and its lower end forked and embracing the counter shaft 34. Adjacent to the forked end of said link 39 is provided a roller 40 which rides upon the periphery of a cam 41 fixed upon the counter shaft 34 by means of which the paste roll 27 is lowered into engagement with the seals or labels in order to transfer paste thereto from the distributing roll 22.
42 denotes brackets extending outwardly at right angles from the sides of the machine at each side of the recess 17 in the package or carton guide 16. Upon the outer ends of said brackets 42 are provided upwardly extending posts 43 upon which is pivotally and tiltingly mounted a label or seal magazine 44 having a depending portion 45 through which extends an adjustable screw 46 adapted to engage with a stop 47 on one of said brackets 42 to limit the inward and upward movement of said magazme.
Upon the upper portion of each of the brackets 42 is provided a frame'48 which extends inwardly and terminates at about the outer wall of the guide 16. Within each of said frames 48 are provided two arallel longitudinal guide slots 49, 50, of w ich the slot 50 is provided in itsupper edge adjacent to its inner end with an angular projection 50 and in its lower edge with a corresponding recess 50".
51 denotes a label or seal carrier comprising a suction box 52 having its lower half perforated and its upper half formed as a movable plate 52 working upon a horizontal hinge. From the lower rear portion of said suction box 52 extends a hollow pro- .jection '51 having a nozzle 53 extending therefrom adapted to receive a flexible tube extending from a suitable suction apparatus, not shown. a
From the opposite edges of the suction box 52, at about the center thereof, the projection 51 is provided with trunnlons 54 a slot 57 in the upper end of an operatinglever 58 having its lower end pivotally secured in a bearing 59 extending outwardly from the side member of the machine frame, In order to render the connection'between the suction box 52 and the upper end of said operating lever 58 flexible or yielding a coil spring 60 is disposed upon the rod 56 with its ends bearing against the inner side of said operating lever 58 and the suction box 52.
In order to permit of the movable plate 52 of the suction box 52 being actuated independently thereof said plate 52 is provided with a link 61 which has its inner end pivotally secured to the rear surface of said movable plate 52 and its other end extending outwardly betweenthe arms 62 of the suction box 52, and its extreme outer end provided with a slot 63 engaged by a pin 64 on the upper end of the operating lever 58.
The operating lever 58 is actuated by means of a lever 15 supported in a bearing 63 secured upon the front of the machine. The" said lever 65 has a forwardly extending portion 65 provided with a pin 64 engaging a slot 58 in the operating lever 58, and at its opposite end said lever 65 is pivotally connected to an arm 66 having its rear end bifurcated and embracing the driven shaft 12, and provided adjacent to its bifurcated end with a roller 67 working in the cam groove 15 of the cam 14.
The operation of themachine is as follows It will be understood that when the carton closing machine is in operation, the closed, but unsealed cartons 70- are being continuously fed through the guides 16 of the machine. As'the inner shaft 12' is constantly rotating the cam 14 thereon will periodically draw the operating lever 58 inward throng the medium of the pivoted lever 65, arm 66 and roller 67 thereon which enga es the cam groove 15 of the cam 14. As t e lever 58 1s drawn inwardly the rod 56 moves the label .or seal carrier 51 inwardly within the guides 49, 50. As the carrier 51 is moved inwardly and out of engagement with the openbase of the label or seal magazine 44 the upper end of said magazine will move slightly upward and outward under the influence of the s ring 44 until its movement is arrested by the engagement of the screw 46 w th the stop 47. As the carrier 51 and the magazlne 44 begins to move, said carrier, by the suction produced therein, will withdraw the lowermost label or seal 69 from the magazine 44, and carry the same upon its upper horizontal surface. As it continues its movement the paste roll 27 will be brought down into contact with the label or seal 69 on the carrier and apply paste thereto. As the carrier with its label thereon is advanced the studs 55 upon said carrier will engage the cam projections 50 and cause the carrier to asassume a vertical position, in which position it is continued to the end of its movement where it causes the lower half of the label or seal 69 to be pressed against the front wall 71 of the carton 70. Immediately thereafter the upper half or hinged plate 52 will be caused to move inward and downward and assume a horizontal position under the continued inward movement of the lever 58 and rod 61, and thereby cause the upper half of the label 69 to be pressed into engagement with the cover 7 2 of the carton, and seal the same,- and complete the operation.
With the continued rotation of the shaft 12 the parts will be restored to the initial position shown in full lines at Fig. 1, and the operation first described repeated upon the succeeding carton.
It will of course be understood that the label may be of any desired length or width,
and that one or more, as desired, may be applied to the carton to seal the same.
Having thus described our said invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A machine of the character described comprising package supporting means, a label magazine, means for transferring a label from said magazine, and means for rendering said label adhesive; said transfer means comprising a support, a foldable member, means for actuating said support to carry the label into engagement with one wall of a package, and means for actuating said foldable member to carry the remainder of said label into engagement with another gall of said package, substantially as speci- 2. A machine of the character described comprising package supporting means, a label holder, a carrier comprising a suctio" box and a hinged plate, means for actuatin said suction box and hinged plate jointly to withdraw a label from said holder and bring one part of said label into contact with one wall of a package, means adapted to actuate said hinged plate independently of said sue-- tion box to bring the remainder of said label into contact with another wall of said package, and means for rendering said label ad.- hesive during the transfer thereof from said holder to said package, substantially as specified.
