UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI S. WILSON, OF WABASH, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
To all whom it may concern: c Y
Be it known that I, LEVI S. WILSON, of Vabash, in the county of Vabash and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists, first, in the construction of the plow-beam; second, in the construction of the share of the plow 5 and third, in the construction of a brace connecting the mold-board and land-side, and to which the handles are attached, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in wh ich- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my plow from the mold-board side. Fig. 2 is a similar view from the land-side, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the brace connecting the mold-board and land-side.
Arepresents the mold-board; B, the share; O, the plow-beam 5 and D I), the handles. The plowbeain O is on the land-side hollowed out, as represented in Fig. 2, making that side beveled from the throat toward the rear instead of straight, as is usually the case, whereby the beam is made to clean itself, preventing the dirt and stubble from adhering to it, and thus materially lessening the draft. In Fig. 1 I have represented a straight plow-beam, or a beam without this bevel, as the design is to have duplicate beams, so that either one may be u sed, according to the soil or the work to be done. rIhe plowshare B has an extension, a, as shown in Fig. 1, which forms the shin of the plow and joins the throat at x, so that whenever a new share is put on the plow at the same time obtains a new shin. E represents a brace connecting and bracing the mold-board and land-side. The brace is made of an L-shaped bar, made slightly concave on its front side, and one end, b, bent toward the rear at an angle of about forty-five degrees, so as to iit against the rear side of the mold-board. Through this end is an elongated slot for the passage and adjustment of a bolt to secure it to the mold-board. At the other end of the brace E is a downwardlyprojecting pin, d, which is` to be inserted in a loop or eye formed on the inner side of the beam. On the upper side of the brace E is a hook, 7L, under which one of the handles D passes, the other handle passing under and bearing against a shoulder, 1, on the inner side of the beam. The two handles D D are attached together in the usual manner andl their front or lower ends placed behind the share close to the land-side. A pin is passed through the handle, which passes under the hook h, in front of the brace, said pin being bent into the concave on the brace, thus holding the handles steady in position. It will readily be seen that the mold-board and share can readily be removed without disturbing the handles when desired to exchange cast-iron for steel, or vice versa.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The brace E constructed as described, and provided with bent end b, pin d, and hook h, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day ofApril, 1871.
Witnesses: LEVI S. WILSON.
U. L. EVERT, A. N. MARE.
