LOGGING BUTT-HOOK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mill City, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented cerinvention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the butt hook. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the hook. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the hook-supporting block. Fig. 4c is a'section taken on line 4-4: of F ig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of the latchmember.
Referring to the drawing by numerals l designates the hook-carrying block which is provided with a pair-of spaced ears, 2,between which ears 2 is pivotally secured the An eye 4 is secured, to the outer faces of the ears 2 and a pin 5 passes through the ears 2, eye 4 and. hook 3 for securing the same together. A retaining pin 6 passes through one end of the pin 3 for holding the same in engagement with the block 1. This pin 5 is provided with an enlarged head 7 at one end to hold the same against movement in one direction.
This block 1 is provided with a pocket 8 1 within which pocket is placed the latchmember 9. The pocket 8 is provided with a spring receiving socket 10 at the inner end thereof for receiving the spring 11. The latch-member 9 is provided with an inwardly projecting finger 12, which extends into the socket 10, the spring 11 normally urging an outward pressure upon the latchmember 9. A locking screw 13 is carried by the block 1 and engages the notch 14 formed in one side of the latch-member 9, for limit- Specification of Letters Patent. ing the outward movement of the latchmember 9. This latch-member is provided with a plurality of shoulders 15 for limiting the inward movement of the member 9.
The hook 3 is provided with an extending bill 16, which is adapted to fit in the socket 17 as shown in Fig. 2. It should be understood that the lateh-member 9 will hold the bill 16 in the pocket 17 until the same is depressed. As shown in Fig. 1, the latch mem her 9 remains normally flush with the outer edge 18 of the block 1.
It should be understood that the outer edges 18 will constitute a protecting edge for the latch-member 9 and prevent the latchmember from being accidentally depressed and the consequent releasing of the hook 3. Since the latch-member 9 is protected as described above, it will be seen that the logging chain which is adapted to engage the hook will not be likely to release the hook accidentally. In order that the latch-member 9 may be operated to release the hook 3, it will be necessary for the operator to push the latch-member inwardly with his fingers.
As is shown in Fig. 2, the locking screw 13 is provided with a head 19 which is seated in the socket 20 and is thereby shielded from wear upon the hook.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A logging butt hook of the class described comprising a block, said block provided with a latch receiving pocket, said pocket provided with a spring retaining socket at its inner end, a latch member posi tioned, in said latch receiving pocket, an inwardly extending linger carried by said latch member and fitting in said socket, a spring carried in said socket and normally urging said latch member outwardly, a locking screw carried by said block, said latch member provided with a notch upon the under side thereof, said locking screw engaging said notch for limiting'the outward move ment of said latch member, a hook pivotally secured to said block and provided with an extending bill adapted to lit in said pocket in said block, and said latch member adapted to engage said extending bill for holding said hook against accidental release from said block.
2. A logging butt hook of the class described comprising a block, said block provided with a latch receiving pocket, said pocket provided with a spring retaining socket at its inner end, a latch member positioned in said latch receiving pocket, an in wardly extending finger carried by said latch member and fitting in said socket, a spring carried in said socket and normally urging said latch member outwardly, a locking screw carried by said block, said latch member provided with a notchupon'the under side thereof, said locking screw engaging said notch for limiting the outward movement of said latch member, a hook pivotally secured to said block and provided with an extending bill adapted to fit in said pocket in said block, said latch member adapted to engage said extending bill for holding said hook against accidental release from said block, said block provided with a straight outer edge, and said latch member being adapted to normally extend flush with said outer edge of said block.
