into the cylinder above the piston. This air will more or less freely mix with the explosive mixture in the cylinder, but will not mix much with the explosive mixture which has remained in the charge segregating chamber. When, however, the piston moves upward on its compression stroke it will compress this mixture of the explosive charge and air, and the result will be a much. higher compression thanif the cylinder contained only the explosive mixture drawn in through the inlet port. The gas which is in the charge segregating chamber, and especially in the end thereof adjacent to the spark plug, will be much richer than that part of the charge which is below this point. Therefore, when the spark passes there is the greater certainty that the charge will be ignited. When as a result the piston goes down on its explosion stroke it will again compress air in the air compression chamber. Vhen the piston passes the port a, this compressed air will rush into the cylinder above the piston. To a considerable extent it will mix with the exploded gases in the cylinder andv dilute them, so that as a result when the piston moves on its exhaust stroke the exhaust gases in the cylinder, as distinguished from those in the charge segregating chamber, will be more completely exhausted than those with the ordinary construction. When the piston now goes down on its suction stroke, and the explosive mixture is drawn into the charge segregating chamber, this incoming mixture will drive out the exhaust gases which were in the charge segregating chamber, and therefore, as before stated, this chamber will contain a very rich mixture when vthe piston completes its next ccmpression stroke.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In a four-cycle internal combustion engine, the combination of the cylinder, a removable head plate thereforcontaining a charge Seg regating chamber which extends upward from the lower face of said head plate, said head plate containing a valve controlled inlet port which discharges directly into the upper end of said charge segregating chene ber, and a valve controlled exhaust port which communicates through the lower face of said head plate with the upper enti of the cylinder, a spark plug carried by said het'l plate Yand projecting into said charge Segre` gating chamber, a compressedv air chamber.
