lie it known that I. JOHN ll. \VIMER, a citizen of the ,l niied States. residing at Ashland. in the county of Jackson and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful improvements in Cattletanchions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cattle stanchions embodying lever locking,
and releasing mechanisms.
One object of the invention to provide a frame of improved construction in which the stanchion or stanchions are mounted and which. frame also forms the head or heads of the stalls.
Another object of the invention is to effect means in the construction of the stan chion so that the same maybe readily opened or closed and may also be adjusted to any desired width.

The frame 1 in which the stanchion 2 is mounted is here shown as constructed of pieces of pipe of suitable length and of pipe fittings. or any other tubular material of suitable size and length that will provide perfect working members and secure the desired strength, durability. and sanitary conditions. The lower tubular members 3 of the frame are connected together by a T 4 and the outer ends are connected by Ts 5 to the lower end of vertical. tubular members 6. The upper ends of said vertical tubular memhcrs'which form the sides of the frame are connected by cross couplings 7 to the upper members 8. Said upper members are connected together at a. point mid-way between the side members of a cross coupling 9. The Ts 5 have base lugs 10 and are socured by bolts or the like to a suitable sill or floor 11. Any desired number of the frames 1 may be joined together as in Fig. 3, by securing: the lower and upper members thereof to the Ts 5 and cross couplings 7 espectively as shown. One side member 6 of the end frame is provided with a frame 12 which eon'iprises a T 13, lower and upper tubular members 14, and 15. which are respectively threaded in said T and one of the cross couplings 7 and an outer. vertical side member 16 which is connected to the members l4. by elbows 17. l st 19 are ,connectml by nipples 19 to the upper vertical arms of the cross couplings 7. The sides of the stalls are formed by tubular bars 20 which are preferably shaped as here shown and the lower ends of which are sccured to the floor by hinges 21. their upper ends being secured to the side members 6 ot the. frames by clamps 2'2. These stall di viding' bars also form braces for the frames which carry the stanehions, as will be understood.
Each stanchion is also preferably made of pipes and fittings and is here shown as having. a T 23 at the lower end provided in its depending vertical arm with a tubular pivot 24 which is mounted in the cross coupling 4.
A tubularv arm 25 extends through and is secured in the T 23 and has a coupling member 26 at one end to which the lower end of the pivotally mounted side 27 of the stanehion is pivoted as at 28. The other side member 29 of the stanchion has a T 30 at its lower end which is slidably mounted on the tubular arm 25 and are to be secured thereto by any desired adjustment by means of a securing screw or bolt 31. At the upper end of the stanchion is a. T 32 which has a tubular pivot 33 in its upper, vertical arm and mounted in the cross conpling9. A. tubular arm 34 is attached to the T 32. At the upper end of the member 29 of the stanchion is a T 35 which is slidably mounted on the arm 34 and may be secured thereto at any desired adjustment by a set screw or bolt 36. Hence the width of the space between the side members 27 and 29 of the stanchion may be varied as required, according to the size of the animal. The stanchion is pivotally mounted at its upper and lower ends as hereinbefore described so that it may bereadily turned to accommodate itself to the movements of the animal. A strap clevis 37 is pivotally connected. to the upper end of the member 27 of the stanchion as at 38. A locking rod 39 is slidably mounted in the Ts 32, 35 and in thetubnlar arm 34 and has one end pivotally connected to the inwardly extending arni of the strap clevis 37 asv at 40. At the other end of said locking rod is a ring 41 for the attachment of one end of a chain 42. A spring 43 to open the stanchion has one end connected to the outer end of the strap clevis 37 as at 44 and the other end attached to a chain 45 which is attached to one of the side members 6 by a hook or other suitable device 46. The locking rod has a locking notch 47 in its upper side, near the clevis 37.
To lock the stanchion in closed position, I provide a vertically movable bolt 48 which operates in the upper centrally arranged cross coupling 9 and is provided at its upper end with a vertical yoke 49 in which a roller 50 is mounted. I also provide a longitudinally movable closing rod 51 which is mounted in suitable guides 52 on the frame members 6. The chains 42 are attached, when desired, by snap hooks 53 to suitable clips 54 on the closing rod, said chains engaging pulleys 55 in U-shaped clips 56 which are secured to the members 6 of the frames at the right hand side of the stalls. A lever 57 is provided for operating the closing rod, said lever being pivotally mounted at its lower end as at 58 at the bottom of the frame 12 and being connected by a suitable link or strap clevis 59 to the closing rod.
Assuming that all of the chains are connected as above described, it would be understood that when the closing rod is moved to the right, by a corresponding movement,
of the closing lever, the chains 42 will draw the locking rods 39 in the required direction to close the stanchions. As the members 27 of the stanchions reach their vertical, closed positions, the notches 47 of the lockingrods will reach a position directly under the bolts 48 and if said bolts are free, they will drop by their own gravity into said notches thereby locking the stanchions as will be understood. The closing of the stanchions will be efi'ected against the tension of the springs 43 so that said springs will tend to hold the stanchions parallel with the frame but will yield and will permit pivotal movement of the stanchions to accommodate themselves to the movements of the animals.
I also provide a releasing rod 60 which is slidably mounted in the Ts 18 and is connected at one end by a link or clevis 61 with a releasing lever 62. Said releasing lever is pivotally mounted at its lower end as at 63 in a. clevis bracket 64 which is bolted as at 65 to the right hand side of the frame 1. Guard straps 66 are provided for the closing and releasing levers as shown.
\Vedge shaped releasing cams 67 are provided, one for each stanchion and each re leasing cam is pivotally mounted by a clamping screw 68 on a clevis 69 which is secured as at 70 on the releasing rod. When the releasing cams are turned upwardly to a vertical position, they are inoperative and may be secured in such position by the clamping screws 68 if it be not desired to release the stanchions simultaneously. When the said releasing cams are turned to the right, toward the yokes 49 and secured in a horizontal position or substantially so as shown in Fig. l, the apparatus is arranged for simultaneously releasing all of the stanchions and causing them to open. This may be accomplished by drawing the lever 62 to the right, thereby imparting corresponding movement to the releasing rod 60 and causing the cams 67 to run under the rollers 50 and thereby raise the bolts 48 and disengage said bolts from the notches 47 of the locking rods, the closing lever 57 having been previously turned to a substantially vertical position to move the closing rod 51 to the left and thereby slacken the chains 42,.the springs 43 as soon as the bolts 48 are raised out of engagement with the notches 47 will open the stanchions as shown in Fig. 1 and as will be readily understood. By disconnecting the chain 42 and arrang ing the earns 67 of each stanchion in vertical inoperative position, said stanchion will be rendered independent of the-others and will not be operated by the movements of the closing and releasing levers.
The side members of the stanchion are provided with guards 71 which are arranged on the outer sides thereof. To secure the stanchion in stationary position, when desired, I provide a suitable clamp 72, the lower end of which may be bolted to the lower tubular frame member and the upper end to the stanchion as at 73.
The guards 71, as provided on the outer side of members of the stanchions, act as guards to keep the cattle from putting their heads in between the frames and the stanchions and compel them to put their heads in the stanchion openings. At the top of the right hand guard 71. I have placed a U-shaped clip 74 so that when the stanchion falls open, the U-shaped clip will rest against the frame of the member at a point near where the spring 43 is fastened with one side of the U-shaped clip on each side of the frame member, thus securing the stanchion in a stationary position, while open.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention. I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion. and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention. what is claimed is:
1. In combination with a pivotally mount ed stanchion having a pivotally mounted side member, a member pivotally mounted on the free end of said side member, a spring connected to said member and to a fixed point, a rod pivotally connected to said member and mounted for endwise movement in the stanchion, and locking means for the side member arranged to engage and secure said rod.
2. In combination with a stanchion comprising upper and lower members, each hav ing a T and also comprising a relatively fixed side member and a pivoted side member, a member pivotally connected to the side of the pivoted side member, a spring connected to said member and to a fixed point, a rod connected to the free end of the pivoted side member and slidably mounted in the T of the upper member, bearings for the vertical arms of the said Ts, a locking bolt for said rod and pivoted side member and arranged to operate in the upper T and means to operate said bolt.
3. In combination with a stanchion comprising pivotally mounted lower and upper members, a relatively fixed side member and a pivoted side member. a rod pivotally connected to the free end of said pivoted side member and slidably mounted in the upper member. means to coact with said rod to lock said pivoted member in closed position, a spring connected to said pivoted member and also connected to a fixed point, to open said pivoted member and also arrange the stanchion in normal position, and operating means for said rod to close said stanchion.
4. In combination with a stanchion comprising pivotally mounted lower and upper members, a relatively fixed side member and a pivoted side member. a rod pivotally connected to the free end of said pivoted side member and slidably mounted in the upper member. means to coact with said rod to lock said pivoted member in closed position, a spring connected to said pivoted member and also connected to a fixed point, to open said pivoted member and also arrange the stanchion in normal position. operating means connected with said rod to close said stanchion. and means to release the locking device from said rod.
5. In combination with a frame comprising tubularlower, upper and side members, and Ts and cross couplings connecting said members, a T at the center of the lower member, a cross coupling at the center of g: the upper member, a stanchion comprising lower and upper members having Ts piv otally mounted in the last named T and cross coupling, and side members connected to the lower members. one of said side members being pivotally mounted, a notched locking rod connected to the pivotally mounted side member and slidably arranged in the horizontal portion of the upper stanchion T, a spring to open said side member, means connected to said rod to close said side member, a bolt arranged for operation in the upper T of the frame and to engage the notch of the locking rod to lock said pivoted member, and means to operate said 100 bolt.
6. In combination. with a stanchion having a pivotallv mounted side member, a locking rod attached to said pivoted side member ardslidably mounted, a locking 105 bolt to engage and disengage said locking rod, a spring to open said pivoted side memher and also turn the stanchion to normal position, and means to release said locking bolt from the locking rod.
7. In combination with a stanchion having a pivotally mounted side member, a locking rod attached to said pivoted side member and slidably mounted. a locking bolt to engage and disengage said locking rod, a spring to open said pivoted side memher, and means to release said locking bolt from the locking rod and comprising a slid ably mounted releasing rod and a pivotally mounted am on said releasing rod, movable into and out of operative position, said looking bolt having a tappet device for engagement by said cam.

In combination with a frame, a plurality of stanchions, each pivotallv mounted in the frame and having a pivotally mounted side member and a slidably mounted locking rod'connected to said pivotally mounted side member, locking bolts to engage the respective lockingrods and each having a tappet member, a common releasing rod for the stanchions slidably mounted in said frame, supporting members fiXedly mounted on said releasing rod, and actuating cams for said bolts, said cams bearing on said releasing rod and being pivotally mounted in said supporting members, so that any one or more of them may be thrown out of action when desired, and means to operate said releasing rod.
9. In combination With pivotally mounted stanchions having a pivotally mounted side member, locking means for said side member and a spring connected to the side member and to a fixed point and acting to 15 open said side member When the locking means is released and to also turn the stanchion to normal position.
