FANNIE IVI. ULLMANN, OF YOAKUM, TEXAS.
:BAG-SKID.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FANNIE M. ULLMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yoakum, in the county of Lavaca and State of Texas, have invented newT and useful Improvements in Bag-Skids, lowing is a specification.
My present invention pertains to the protection of cotton pick-sacks against wear during the dragging of the same over the ground; and it contemplates the provision of a skid for the purpose, the said skid be ing adapted to rest under a sack and serve as a shoe incidental to the dragging of the sack, and being detachably-connected to the sack so that the sack can be expeditiously removed from the skid for dumping or weighing or to give place to an empty sack.
Other obj ects and advantageous characteristics of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure l is an inverted plan view of the skid constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention that I haveas yet devised. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the skid showing the same in Working position. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view, partly in section, showing the manner of detachablyconnecting the skid body to one of the plates that are permanently attached to the sack.
Fig. 4 is a plan view,'partly in section, showing one of the bolts for effecting the detachable connections. Fig. 5 is a perspective illustratino the arrangement of the pick-sack on the ski Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
My invention contemplates the provision on each sack of metallic plates l; the said plates being riveted or otherwise permanently attached to a sack 2 in the position shown in Fig. 5 or in any other position compatible with the purpose of my invention, and being provided with protruding knuckles 3.
The body of my novel skid, which is num- Specication of Letters Patent.
of which the folbered 4, ispreferably, though not necessarily,y formed of galvanized-iron, and is provided at its forward Vend and on its underside with an intermediate barrel-section 5 and end barrel-sections Ggfthe said sections Patented June 13, 1916. Application filed January 13, 1916. Serial No. 71,966.
6 being spaced from the section 5 so as to afford intervening Vspaces for the reception of the knuckles of the plates l in the manner shown in Figs. l, 3 and 5. As will be readily observed by reference to Figs. 2 and 5 the barrel sections 5 and 6 areinexpensively formed by bending the end portion of the skid body 4f. The barrel section 5 is longitudinally-slotted as indicated by 7 and at the outer ends of said slots 7 angularly-disposed yseats 8 are provided. Bolts 9 are i movable in the barrel section 5 and into and out of the knuckles 3 and the barrel sections 6. The said bolts are moved through the medium of handle sections 10, said sections l() being movable in the slots 7, and when the handle sections 10 are swung into the seats 8 it will be noted that ther bolts will be held against casual retraction, with the result that in practice, there is no liability of a pick-sack becoming accidentally disconnected from the skid. In this connection, it will be observed, that incidental to the dragging of the skid over the ground, the handlesections 10 extend rearwardly from the bolts and are drawn after the bolts so that there is no liability of the dragging having a tendency to displace the handle sections 10 from the' seats 8. When, however, it is desired,
to disconnect the sack from the skid, it is simply necessary to swing the handle sections 1'0 into alinement with the slots 7 and then retract the bolts 9 until the latter are clear of the knuckles 3 of the plates l.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A skid designed for use in connection with a bag equipped with knuckles; said skid comprising a body .formed of sheet-metal and having its end portion bent to form at its underside an intermediateV barrel and end barrels spaced from the intermediate barrel, and also having longitudinal slots in the intermediate barrel and angularly-disposed,
rearwardly-directed seats extending from said slots7 bolts movable in the intermediate barrel and into and out of the end barrels, and handles movable in the longitudinal slots and into and ont of the seats.
2. A skid designed for use in connection with a bag equipped with knuckles; said skid comprising a body having barrels eons't1uoted and arranged to be alined With the knucmemo;
nesses.
