To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN D. SI-IIVEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the township of Porter, in the county of Cass and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hens Nests; and I do declare the'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in a hens nest, and one object is to provide a construction arranged to discharge a fresh laid egg from the nest into a separate compartment, and to provide means so that the be stored in said compartment and eggs can therefrom when the hen has left removed the nest.

A further object of this invention is to provide a hens nest of this character which is also adapted for use as a setting nest.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eflicient in operation.

WVith these and numerous other objects in view my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved hens nest; Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the nest swung back from the receptacle; Figs.

4, 5 and 6 are a central vertical section, a bottom view, and a top view of the lower portion of the nest showing the disk 13 applied thereto; Fig. 7 is a detail section showing a slightly modified form of disk.

In describing my invention I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding f parts throughout the several views and in which the numeral 1 designates a box which is made of any preferred form of wood or metal, and has a circular opening 2 in the top thereof, the other sides of the box being closed. A rubberpad 3 is fastened to the bottom of the box in alinement with the vertical opening 2 in the top thereof.

The nest i comprises an annular flat sheet metal ring of greater diameter than the opening 2 in the top of the box adapted to be positioned thereon. A, smaller sheet metal ring 7 of less size than the rubber'pad 3 in the bottom of the box and disposed in vertical alinement therewith is positioned in said box in a horizontal plane beneath the horizontal plane of the ring 5, and said rings are connected by an'annular' series of radially arranged arcuate wires 6 formed with horizontally extending extremities secured respectively at their upper andll'ower ends to the bottom face of the upper ring and the corresponding face of the lower ring. It will be noted that the nest as above described has a centrally disposed circular opening in the bottom thereof formed by the terminal ring 7, and when it is desired to use this nest as a setting nest a circular flatdisk 13 having a staple 14 on its under side is positioned in the nest above the said opening, and'is secured therein by the fastening member 16 as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.

Secured to the lining of the said nest is a nest egg 17 which is formed of any preferred material such as used in the making of such eggs, the purpose of which is obvious.

When it is desired to remove the eggs from box, the lip or handle 12 on the supporting ring of the nest 4 is grasped and the nest swung upwardly and outwardly from the aperture 2 in the top of the box in which it is positioned, by action of the hinge 9 which connects the said nest and box. The

eggs may then be removed easily from the box and the nest swung back into position for the purpose of its use. 7

When it is desired to use this hens nest as a setting nest the circular flat disk 13 is placed over the opening in the nest at and secured thereto by the fastening member 16 as shown in Figs. at and 5 of the drawings, whereby the eggs will be prevented from dropping through the nest into the box and will be retained therein during the setting. If preferred, a modified form of disk 13 is used as shown in Fig. 7.

It will be seen that in the provision of a hens nest embodying the novel features of construction above set forth, the eggs need not be removed every day, nor can they be eaten or become in any way soiled by the hens, as they are protected while in the box. This nest is handy, clean and attractive and may be easily and simply placed on the floor of a building or fastened to the walls or sides thereof, or in any other convenient place.

From the foregoing description of my improved device the manner of applying the same to use and the operation thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that Ihave provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient 'means for carrying out the objects of the invention. V i

I claim as my invention: 1. The combination with a box having a fiat horizontal top formed with a circular aperture therethrough, of a flat horizontal ring overlying said top and surrounding the aperture therein, sald rlng' being struck from a s ngle sheet of metal and having at di'an'ietrically opposite points on its outer edge a pair of projections, one of said projections being curled upon itself to form a horizontally disposed hinge knuckle while the outer end of the other projection is bent upwardly and constitutes a handle by means of whichthe ring may be tilted, a hinge member cooperating with said knuckle and secured to the top of the box, and a nest secured to the ring and depending therefrom through the aforesaid aperture into the box, said nest having in its lower end an opening 0 allow eggs to pass therefrom into said 2.
