Description

GEORGIA M. RUTLAND, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
SKIRT-MARKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1916.
Application filed October 3, 1914. Serial No. 864,893.
, as its primary object contemplates a marker,
extremely simple in its nature, so positioned relatively to the skirt when worn, as to mark thereon, at a point preferably below the hips of the wearer, a line extending around the skirt in parallel relation to the Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will enable the seamstress to accurately gage the skirt without the assistance of a helper.
The above and additional objects are ac' complished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a skirt marker, the application of the invention being shown; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the clamps; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the marker.
Referring now to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a table (although any other suitable support might equally as well be used) to which the marker is secured. In its preferred embodiment, the marker consists of a pair of clamps 2 connected as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 by a cord or the like flexible element 3, which in practical application is drawn taut or to extend parshown, is affixed to the respective clamps, the desired distance apart. The cord 3, as shown, is affixed to the respective clamps, openings 4 being formed in the clamps to facilitate the attachment of the cord thereto.
' When properly placed, the dress or skirtto be gaged is worn inside out by the party being fitted, the skirt being hung from the Waist line in the usual manner. The wearer then stands directly adjacent the table or support 1 to which the marker is attached and in such position as to cause the cord 3 to directly contact the skirt at a point preferably well below the hips of the wearer. The cord having been chalked, it is apparent that a line will be marked on the skirt parallel with the floor as the wearer turns completely around. The skirt is then removed and measured from the chalk line down as far as desired, this measurement being the same at. all points around the skirt. The difference in the length of the skirt is usually caused by the protruding portion of the wearer, as the hips or the abdomen, but the marker being located below these protuberances would not be effected thereby but will mark on a level line entirely around the skirt, as before stated. When thus marked and gaged, the skirt when finished will be of a uniform length and made to hang in the desired manner. 7
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is evident that colored chalk should be used when a white skirt is to be marked and that white chalk should be used when a colored skirt is to be marked; that the use of a helper in gaging the skirt is unnecessary; and that a device constructed as herein before disclosed may be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
It will be understood that the above description, and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and' arrangement of parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device for marking and gaging skirts when worn by the person being fitted including a horizontally disposed yielding taut flexible element against which the skirt is pressed as the wearer'turns, a support for the device and a means engaging said support to maintain said element taut.
2. A device for marking and gaging skirts when Worn by the person being fitted In testimony whereof I affix my signature including a horizontally disposed yielding in presence of tWo Witnesses. taut flexible element against Which the skirt is pressed as the wearer turns, a support for GEORGIA RUTLAND' the device, and a clamp at each end of said WVitnesses:
element adapted for engagement With said HERBERT BERNDT,
support to maintain said element taut. AUGUSTE LUMPP.
copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G."
