To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, Com BELLE LEMON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Grants Pass, in the county of Josephine and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt- Markers, of which the following is a specifioation.

My invention relates to dressmaking, particularly to the accurate arrangement of the bottoms of skirts, and is of especial value to women making or fitting their own skirts, and the main object thereof is to provide a device whereby a person may positively adjust the bottom of a skirt into absolute parallelism with the floor unaided;

It is now the practice for a second person to kneel upon the floor and measure and mark the bottom of a skirt as to its relationship with the floor, or to turn the bottom of the skirt up and pin the same at different'points, after which the hem so made may be stitched, but with my. invention all a person requires is to adjust the skirt at the waist line, turn around adjacent my invention, remove the skirt, and, with a tapemeasure, determine accurately the bottom line of the skirt with respect to the surface upon which the person stands or walks.

My invention is fully described in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a side view of my invention in position for use; and Fig. 2 is a detached, perspective, view thereof.

In the drawings forming a part of this application I have shown a present preferred form of embodiment of my invention, comprising a handled plate 3 having projections 4: forming jaws at one side thereof and through one of which passes a vertically arranged thumb screw 5 having axrotary button 6 on the bottom thereof, said jaws being adapted to be passed above and beneath the surface of a table and the device clamped to said table, shown at 7, by means of the thumb screw 5, thus holding the device immovable. The other side of the plate 3 is likewise provided with projections 8 and 9 forming jaws and through the former of which passes a vertically arranged thumb screw 10 having a rotary button 11 at the bottom thereof, said screw being adapted to engage and securely hold a piece of tailor s chalk in such manner as to have said chalk project away from the table 7.

In view of the fact that the surface of the table 7 is parallel with the floor upon which said table stands, it will be obvious that the chalk 12 will make a mark parallel to said floor upon any object resting upon the floor and revolved against said chalk.

In practice, the dressmaker drapes the skirt upon her person and adjusts the same properly at the waist line, after which she stands suiliciently close to the chalk to have the same bear lightly against the skirt, though sufficiently hard to cause a mark to be made thereby, and she then slowly and carefully revolves, thus producing a chalk mark around the skirt which is, manifestly, parallel with the surface upon which she stands, as a floor. The skirt is then removed and, the length thereof having been already determined, a number of similar measurements are taken, with a tape-measure, from the said chalk mark to the proposed bottom of the skirt, and the material turned up at these measured points and temporarily secured, as by pins or basting. When a num ber of such points of the skirt, around the circumference thereof, have been so turned up and secured, the proposed'bottom of the skirt is effected and all the points of which are equidistant from the said chalk mark, and the resulting hem may then be stitched and the skirt maker is assured that absolute parallelism with the floor is attained. She may, also, so gage the measurements at different points as to attain an inclined effeet, the said chalk mark serving as the guide or basis for such measurements, and it will thus be seen that the desired result is accomplished without the assistance of another person as is now necessary.
