'Ni STATES PATENT onnon WILLIAM JORDAN PAUL, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNORflIO PAUL, SIEWERS I 82: MCKAY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
- LOOSE-LEAF, BINDER.
1,1sv,ose.
Application filed August 9, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JORDAN PAUL, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing in Jersey City, county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is'a specification.
My invention relates to binders for loose leaves and my particular improvements are applicable to binding loose leaves of any character of book, such for example as check and account books and my present improvements may be used with or without a bookcover and may be also used as an ordinary file for securing together papers in suitable bunches.
I have illustrated a type of my invention in the accompanying drawings, wherein;
Figure 1, is a plan view of a loose-leaf binder in book form and containing my improvements'with the lower left hand part of one cover being broken away. Fig. 2, is an enlarged vertical section taken longitudinally of the book, the plane of the section being indicated by the lines 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is an enlarged top planview of the binding parts, shown as detached from the book back and is partly in horizontal sectionv and partly broken away. Fig. 4, is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the binding parts, detached, and broken away near the right hand end. Figs. 5, and
6 are detailed views of the locking bolt and its actuating cam, showing the relative positions of the parts in locked and unlocked positions, respectively, with the bolt and the detachable member which carries it, being broken away at each side of the cam. These two views being on a largerscale than the other views.
Referring to the drawlngs, 1n WlllCh llke numbers of reference designate like parts' throughout, 1 indicates a base plate or memher on which fixed upright impaling posts 2, are mounted a suitable distance apart and as many in number as desired, though for an ordinary size of binder it will suffice to have twoposts as herein shown. These posts have the loose leaves 3, impaled or strung upon them, the leaves usually having suitable perforations 4:, through which the posts pass loosely, the perforations being placed so as toregister with the posts.
The detachable member which is releas Specification of Letters Patent.

ably locked to the free ends of the impaling posts, comprises afiat. tube 5, having circular holes 6, formed through its inner side for receiving the reduced ends 7 ,of the posts, which ends fit into said holes so v that the annular shoulders 8, take against the outer.
side of the tube and act to space the detachable member from the base-member carrying the posts. 7
Near its free end each post is formedwith a peripheral groove 9, with which the narrow part of the locking slots 10 of the bolt 11, engage. The bolt 11, is a fiat bar mounted w1th1n the flat tube and is provided with raised places 12, formed by making transverse bends in the bar neareach end thereof. f
These raised places bear against the inner walls of the tube and make sullicientv friction between the parts to prevent'the bolt being too loosein the casing in which it slides. At the center of length,thebolt-is raised slightly at 13, (see Fig. 4:)..where it i is formed with an L-shaped or right-angled slot 14:, in which works the cam-pin 15, depending from the underside of the diskfiat tube 5 where it is mounted to turn so that the cam can be rocked back andforth on the axis of the stud. The stud is mounted,v
to turn-by reducing its outerendwhere it passes throughthe wall of the tube and then making the extreme end flat, as shown in Fig. 4:. i
The outer face of the cam head 16, is pro-' vided with a slot 18, adapted to readily'receive a blade or tool by means of which-the cam is turned about a quarter of a'circleQ When the bolt is shot, the cam-pin 15, stands in the angle of the L-shaped slot, as shown in Fig. 5. By turning the head 16 of the cam a quarter of a circle in the direction opposite to that in which the hands 80 shaped head 16,,of the cam; The stud 17 s fixed to thecenter of the head, passes loosely through the slot andinto'the side .of. the
lock the pins, the cam head 16, is turned a quarter of a oircle'from the position shown in Fig. 6 and in the reverse direction from that just described, This causes the cam pin to retrace itspath oftravel and to bear against the opposite edge of the slot and thereby force the "bolt in the reverse direction.
The locking slots 10, of the bolt have their icor responding ends enlarged at 20, to permit the heads of the posts to pass freely in and out of-the :slots in putting the binder together and taking it apart. Then the bolt ISI SlId SO EIS to bring the narrowpart'of the slots in 'thegrooves in the post heads, the
partsarel then locked securely together.
In the. book hereinshown the base memclose the loose leaves 3, so as to make a complete andsubstantial book.
; It'will be note d'that the detachable member carrying the :bolt" is comparatively thin in cross section and that the disk-shaped *headiof the caniwhichris set in the side of member isflat and substantially flush with the surface of the member,-thus avoid- .lngi any "objectionable projecting part. The
; :binder -partsmay all be made of metal and the fiat tube 5, and this is an important adwhen assembled present a very compact and durable structure; a
It Willalso be noted that the bolt and its actuating cam are completely housed within vantage in devices of this character.
In operating the device, the detachable member first released from the impaling postsby turning the cam,as described, and
'then'thisimember is lifted from the posts uponwhiclrthe loose perforated leaves may i'then be placed. Thereuponithe detachable member is placed back upon the free ends of theposts and the cam turned so as to move -,..the"b"olt into looking position Withthe posts.
,Theparts-are thus firmly held together with the leaveslinplace. NVhen the leaves are to :be removed, the detachable member is unlocked'from the-posts andremoved so as to permit the leaves tobe lifted off the posts.
I v- I wish to be understood as not limiting my invention to, the particular form herein shown, as it is evident that changes may be made inthe various parts thereof, without however departing from the spirit of my invention. I I 1' Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desireto secure by Letters Patera is: a a
1; In a loose leaf binder, the combinas j tion of a base-memberjprovided with suitably spaced impaling-posts, a detachable flat ,tubeprov'ided with lateral openings spaced to register with the ends of said impalingposts, an endwise sliding bolt within said tube and formed withopenings for engaging and locking the inserted ends of said impaling-posts, said bolt being provided with an operating slot having a bend therein, a bolt operating cam comprising a disk provided on its underside with a central stem mounted in the interior wall of said tube so as to turn and an eccentric pin fixed on the underside of said disk and loosely engaging the said slot in the bolt, the said tube being vprovided with an orifice in which said disk loosely fits and by which it is exposed upon the exterior of said tube, the said stem of the cam passing loosely through the said slot in the bolt, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a base-member provided with suitably spaced impaling posts, a detachable member comprising a tube provided with lateral openings spacedto register with said posts and adapted to receive the ends thereof, an endwise sliding bolt mounted within the tubular member and adapted to engage the inserted ends of said posts and to lock them to said detachable member and provided with raised places for increasing the friction between thebolt and i the interior of the tubular member,'anda cam mounted on said detachable member and operatively connected with said bolt for shooting and retracting it.
3. In a loose-leaf binder, the combination of a base-member provided with suitably spaced impaling-posts, adetachable flat tube provided with lateral openings spaced to register with the ends of said inipalingposts, an endwise sliding I bolt within said tube and formed with openings for engag-' ing and locking the inserted ends of said impaling-posts, said bolt being provided with an operating slot having a. bend thereima bolt operating cam comprising a circular disk provided on its under side with a central stem mounted in the interior wall of said tube so as to turn and an accentric pin fixed on the underside of said disk and loosely engaging the said slot in the bolt, the said tube being provided with a circular orifice in which said disk loosely fits and by which it is exposed upon the exterior of said "tube, and being substantially flush therewith, the outer face of said disk being formed with a slot for receiving an instrument to turn the disk, said stem of the cam passing loosely through the said slot in the bolt, substantially as described.
4. Ina loose leaf binder, the combination of a base-member provided withsuitably spaced impaling-posts, a detachable flat tube provided with lateral openings spaced to register with the ends of' said'impalingposts, an endwise sliding bolt within said tube and formed with openings for engaging and locking the inserted ends of said im- With a central stem projecting downwardly through said bolt-operating slot and having 'its lower end mounted in the interior Wall of said-tube so as to turn, an eccentric pin fixed in the underside of said disk and projecting loosely into the bolt-operating slot so that its lower end clears the interior Wall floplel of thin patent may be obtained for hire cents each, by addressing the commissioner of Patents.
of the tube, and the said tube being provided With a lateral orifice in Which said disk loosely fits, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto 15- set my hand in the presence of the two subscribing Witnesses.
