UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JESSE A. CRANDALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN VELOCIPEDES.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, JESSE A. GRANDALL, of Brooklyn7 county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Velocipedes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specifica-tion.
Figure I represents a side view of my improved yelocipcde. Fig. II is a front View ofthe saine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to and consists in an improved propelling and steering apparatus, by which a velocipede is easily and conveniently' propelled and steered by use of the arms alone, y
the feet being at rest on foot-supports, provided for.
A in the drawing represents the body of the velocipede. B are the wheels. The bearing of the axis a., to which the front wheel is keyed or fastened, runs in the lower part of the fork b, to which the rod c is attached, which again terminates in the fork d. In the fork d is pivoted the leverf. To the end of the axis a are fastened the cranks g and 11 placed in opposite directions to each other, these cranks being connected to the lever j' by aid of the connecting-rods k and I. The body A of the velocipede rests in front on the fork l), the front wheel swinging in all desired directions on the rod c. To the sides of the body A are fastened the foot-supports m and n..
It will readily be understood that a person sitting on the saddle C of the body A, resting his feet on the supports m and n, will, by takin hold of both ends of the leverf and working this lever upward and downward, turn the cranks g and la, and thus give motion to the velocipede. In order, also, to steer the velocipede by aid of the same apparatus, the person has simply to turn the lever f to the right or left.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The propelling and steering apparatus of avelocipede, consisting ofthe cranks g and lzy in coilnection with the axis a., the connecting-rods k and I, the lever f, and the fork I); also the footrests m and n, operating as set forth and for the purpose specified.
J. A. GRANDALL.
