JOHN I-I.k SCHOTT, OF BOULDER, COLORADO.
Futuna-MACHINE.
Application filed August 5, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN H. SCHOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boulder', in the county of Boulder and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulling-Machines;
land I do declare the following to be a full,
Q behighly eflicient and durable, and will 20 possess a number of advantageous features,
`among the most salient of which is the provision of means whereby should breakage of the wire occur, injury to the operator will be prevented. v
Vith this general'obj'ect in view, the invention resides in certain' novel features of construction and in unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings wherein: f
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention applied to use, with the carriage member thereof at the beginning of its working stroke; Fig. 2 is a similar view after one working stroke has been completed; Fig. 3 is an elevation of theopposite side of the machine with parts broken away and in section; Fig. 4t is a top plan view; Fig. 5 is a horizontal longitudinal section taken on the plane designated by the line 5-5 of Fig. l1; Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section taken on the plane ofthe line 6-6 of Fig. 1; Fig. 7 is a similarview viewed on the plane indicated byv the liner 7*-7 of Fig. 1.
In these drawings which constitute a part of the application, and in whichV similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates broadly a channel'- shaped guide member whichfis formed of an elongated rectangular back plate 2 and a pair of parallel laterally projecting anges 3 preferably though not necessarily formed integrally with the edge portions thereof i Specification of Letters Patent.

and extending in the saine direction therefrom,Y one end of the back plate 2 and the adjacent ends of the flanges 3, being shown as formed integrally with va hook 4, by means -of which, through the instrumentality of a chain or the like 5, t-he device may be anchored to a postlas disclosed in Fig. 1, or may be secured to another appropriate type of anchor.
The inner facing sides of the flanges 3 are provided with longitudinal grooves 6 re'- ceiving slidably therein, tongues 7 on the opposite edges of an elongated carriage plate 8, such plate having on one end an ear Y 9 towhich is pivoted the offset end of a pitman 10, the other end of said pitman being mounted on anj eccentric wrist pin v11 carried by a.' disk 12 lwhich is rotatably mounted guide member 1 adjacent the hook t thereo The disk 12 is carried by ashaft 13 which extends through the back plate 2 into a gear box 14 and carries a comparatively large gear 15 meshing with the driving pinion 16, the gear and pinionbeing both disposed in the gear box. For driving the pinion 16, anv appropriate crank 17 is provided, such crank being positionedY adjacent the back of the plate 2, for a reason to be explained as the description proceeds.
Secured ,by screws or the like to one edge portion of the carriage plate 8, on the front side thereof, is one or more fixed jaw members 18 having gripping teeth on one face with which the toothed pulling dogs 19 coact, such dogs 19 being pivoted to the opposite edge portion of the plate 8 by removable screws 20 andbeing forced normally toward the jaws 18 by appropriate springs 21.
Rigidly secured by screws or the like to the inner side of one of the flanges 3, is one or more rigid jaw members 18a having serrated faces alined with such faces of the members 18, while pivoted upon removable screws 20a to ears 22 on the inner side of the opposite flange 3, is one or more toothed holding dogs 19a.L which are forced normally toward the jaw members 18a by appropriate springs.
In operation, when the machine is to be used for stretching wire or the like,.the hook 4 is connected by means of the chain 5-or an equivalent device with a post or other appropriate anchor, whereupon the wire to be stretched is positioned between the dogs 19 and 19a and the jaw members 18 and 18a.
Rotation of the crank 7, will now reciprocate the carriage plate 8, thus causing the dogs 19 and jaws 18 to move'therewith, the result being that such devices will travel rearwardly upon the wire when the latter is held by dogs 19a Yand jaws 18a, during the' rearward movement of the carriage plate, but when said plate movesforwardly, the wire will be gripped by the members 18 and 19- and willthus be pulled forwardly between the dogs19aand the jaws 18?, the last named members now serving to again grip the wire VVwhile the pulling means again moves rearwardly previously to another working stroke.
As above suggested, the machine may be constructed with but one dog 19 and one dog 19a, in which case but one member 18 Yand one member 18a will be employed, this construction being capable of use for a` important feature of the invention, since in case of breakage ofthe wire, due for instance to a defect therein, the hand of the operator will be shielded and thus injury will be prevented. All Working parts of the machine are protected either by disposition in the channel-shaped guide 1 or by the gear box 14, whereby such parts may be protected to a great extent against injury due to rough usage, and all movable parts `are detachably 'secured in place,' whereby new members may be substituted for those which may become so worn as to render them ineffective. In addition to these advantages, attention is directed to the fact that the face plate of the gear box 14 may be removed, whereupon gears of different ratios may be substituted for the gears 15 and 16 shown in the drawings. By so doing, the speed of the rmachine as well as the power thereof maybe varied at will.
In the drawings, certain specific details of construction have been shown for accomplishing probably the best results, and in the preceding such details have been described, but it is obvious that I need not be restricted thereto otherwise than to the extent to which the appended claim limits me.
I claim:
A pulling machine comprising a channelshaped guide havingon the exterior of its closed side a gear box, a reciprocatory carriage confined in said guide, a crank likewise confined therein but spaced from the carriage, a pitman connecting the crank and the carriage, Va shaft extending from the Acrank into the gear box, a gear on said shaft confined in the gear box, an additional gear meshing with the aforesaid gear and likewise confined in the gear box, a hand crank for rotating said additional gear, and independent gripping devices carried by the guide and by the carriage.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN H. SCHOTT. IVitnesses:
FRANCIS M. MoMAIIoN, EUGENE J. GILLIS.
