To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS JANsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in. the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Premium Device for Savings-Banks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to coin receivers or banks such as are frequently distributed to the depositors of banking concerns for the collection of coins.
It is a common practice for banking concerns to distribute to depositors, especially to those having savings accounts, small coin receptacles in which money is deposited from time to time as it is secured by the holder of the bank, the bank being taken at intervals by the depositor to the banking house, where it is opened by an official of the bank, and the contents deposited to the credit of the patron.
The present invention is intended to stimulate and maintain an interest on the part of the depositor, and to encourage the collection of coins for the savings account.
It consists substantially in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in accompanying drawings, and more particularly set forth in the claims.

The embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings represents a rectangular metallic box or retainer, consisting of two telescoping parts. The numeral 1 designates the inner one of these parts, which telescopes into an outer casing 2. Each of these parts forms a rectangular box having one open side, and when the two parts are telescoped together, as shown best in Fig. 2," a complete closure is formed. therein a locking device, designated gen erally by the numeral 3, with sliding bolts 4, which are arranged to be forced outwardly by a key into openings 5 in the outer case 2. When the parts are thus telescoped together and the locking devices 3 operated by a key, which is retained by the banking establishment, a closed receptacle is formed which cannot be opened by the de positor, but is accessible only to the person in charge of the key at the banking house. The receptacle itself is no part of the present invention, and any other form of lock box may be used.
At the side of the telescoping section 1 opposite that which carries the locking mechanism, is a wall or partition 6, secured to the side walls of section 1 by lugs? and screws 8. On the inner side of the partition 6 is fastened a coin chute 9 of a curved formation, to prevent access to the interior of' the receptacle. An opening or slot 10 is provided at the upper end of the chute 9 for the reception of coins, and the lower, end of the chute discharges downwardly, asshown at 11, into the receptacle.
Projecting from the side of the partition 6, opposite the chute 9, is a short stub shaft 12, on which a control disk 13 is mounted for free rotation- Secured firmly to disk 13 to rotate therewith, is a ratchet wheel 14, shown in Figs. 4 and 6, and two notches 15 are provided in the periphery of the disk for a purpose to be described. Projecting from the partition 6, on the same side thereof as the control disk 13, is a pair of pins 16, on which is slidingly mounted a key 17. A coil spring 18 is secured to the key 17, and normally draws the key upwardly in a way which will be apparent from Fig. 4 of the drawing. Pivotally mounted on a pin 19, secured to the partition 6, is a holding dog 20, having a catch 21 arranged to enter a notch 22 in the edge of the key slide 17 and retain this slide in its lower position against the tension of the spring 18. The coil spring 23 normally forces the catch 21 resiliently into contact with slide 17 in a way to'cause it to enter the notch 22 whenever the notch is in position to receive the catch. An elongated opening 24 is cut through the partition 6 as shown in Figs. 8 and 4, and a pin 25, carried by the dog 20, projects through the opening 24 into a position opposite one edge of the discharge opening 11 of the coin discharged from' the opening 11, the edge of the coin will strike the pin 25, and force it to the left. as shown in Fig. 3, and thus move'the catch21 out of engagement with the notch 22, and permit the keyslide be drawn upwardly by the spring 18. otally mounted on pin 26, is a pawl 27, normally held in the position shown in Fig. 9 by the spring 28.

during the upward movement of the slide 17 referred to above,'the pawl will move freely over the teeth of'the ratchet wheel 14. If, however, the key 17 is moved downwardly by pressure on the finger piece 29, which extends outside .of the casing, the pawl 27 will engage one of the teeth in the ratchet wheel 14, andgive this wheel, together with the control disk 13, a spinning rotation about the pivot 12. The amount of this rotation will depend, of course, upon partition 6 for 0s v31, provided with through the casing, and carries a finger plece the manner in which the finger piece '29 is struck.
Mounted on the pivot 30, carried by. the
cillation'thereon, is a bar a slide32, which extends 33 in the outside of the casing as shown in the drawing. Pivotally mounted on a projection 34 at the end of the bar 31 is an operating pawl 35, and a coil spring 36 is arranged resiliently to hold the pawl 35 in the position shown in Fig. 4. A coil spring 37 normally holds the bar 31 in its uppermost position, as shown in Fig. 4. Rotatably mounted on a stubshaft 38, at the upper left hand corner of the partition 6, as shown-in Fig. 4, is a register wheel 39, having rigidly secured thereto, for rotation therewith, a ratchet wheel 40. The teeth of a the ratchet wheel 40 are arranged in the pri casing,
path of movement of the projecting lug 41 on the operating pawl 35, when this pawl is swung downwardly by pressure on the finger piece 33. The ratchet wheel and operating pawl are so proportioned that the wheel is rotated a distance corresponding. to one tooth on the ratchet wheel for each oscillation of the pawl carrying bar 31. A detent 42 is pivotally mounted on the partition 6, and is resiliently held in posi-, tion to prevent reverse movement of the ratchet wheel 40 by means of the spring 43.
The register wheel 39 is provided on the face thereof, next the outer wall of the with a series of numeralsextending entirely around the wheel. One numeral'is provided for each tooth on the ratchet wheel 40. The number of these teeth and numerals of course'is determined by'the requirements of the service to which the bank is put;
' Carried by the pivot 45 shown at the lower slide 17 by means of a V ing rlght hand corner of Fig.4 is an-oscillatory bar 46, which has pivotally mounted near the'end thereof, opposite the pivot 45, a pawl 47. A spring 48 normally tends to draws the bar 46 and the pawl 47upwardly about the pivot 45. The'inner edge of the pawl 47"is provided'with a cam surface 51,
whichis arranged to contact with a pin 52 projecting from the partition6. As shown in Fig. 4, the pin 52 holds the pawl 47 out of contactfwith the ratchet wheel 14 when this pawl and the bar 46 are in their uppermost position. A link 52 connects the pin 53 on the bar 31 with the pin 54 on the bar 46. The lower end of the link 52, which 00- operates with pin 54, isprovided with an elongated slot 55, to permit of a slight movement of the bar .31 independently of the bar 46. The pin 56, carried by the bar 31, projects laterally into a position extending over the peripheryof the disk 13'as shown in Figs; 4 and 6, so that normally the-disk ,13 will prevent oscillation of thebar 31 about its pivot 30. If, however, one of the notches 15 is in position to register with the pin 56, it will be apparent that the bar 31 may be moved downwardly about the pivot 30 by pressure on the finger'piece 33. When the bank is delivered to the depositor, the key slide 17 is depressed and locked in its lower position by the dog 20. When a coin of the proper size is inserted in the slot 10 by the depositor it descends through chute 9, and strikes. the pin 5 as it is discharged from the mouth of the chute 11 into the receptacle. When the coin strikesthe pin 25, it moves about its pivot 19 a sufficient distance to disengage the catoh 21 from the notch 22, and
the dog 20 the key slide 17 is thus freed, and is drawn upwardly by the spring 18. The depositor may then strike the finger piece 29, and force the slide 17 downwardly again into position, to be held by the dog 20. 'As the slide moves downwardly the pawl 27 will strike one of the teeth of the ratchet wheel 14, and give the ratchet wheel, together with the control disk 13, a spinning rotation about the pivot 12 as an axis. The disk 13 will continue to rotate for some time, and until it is brought to rest by the friction on the pivot pin 12 and the friction of the air against the rotating disk. When the disk finally comes to rest, in most cases the up permost periphery of the disk will be in position to prevent movement of the pin 56. If, however, the disk comesto rest with one of the notches 15 in registration with the pin 56, the bar 31 will be free to move downwardly about the pivot 30 as an axis when the depositor presses the finger piece 33 in a downward direction against the tension of the spring 37. The fact that the notch 15 is in registration with the pin 56 is disclosed to the depositor by one of the colored portions 62 showing through the opening 61 in the casing. When the depositor sees one of these colored portions opposite the opening 61 he knows that it is possible for him to depress the finger piece 33, and the depres sion of this finger piece as previously explained rotates the register wheel 39 one point, which fact will appear to the depositor by the change of the numeral which is visible through the opening 60, to the numeral of the next higher denomination.
As the bar 31 moves downwardly under pressure on the finger piece 33, the link 52' transmits downward movement to the bar 46, which in turn carries the pawl 47 in the same direction. As the pawl 47 descends, it is permitted by the cam face 51 to swing inwardly into position to contact with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 14. On the return or upward movement of the parts mentioned, the pawl. 47 will strike one of the teeth on the ratchet wheel 14: before it is thrown outwardly by the pin 52, and after the pin 56 has moved out ofthe notch 15. This operation of the pawl 17 will give the disk13 a rotary motion, which will move the notch 16 out of registration with the pin 56, and thus prevent further operation of the finger piece 33 and the registration wheel 39. It will thus be seen thatfor each coin deposited the operating mechanism for the disk 13 is released, and the depositor is given one opportunity for spinning the control disk, and a chance of the disks stopping in position to permit the rotation ofthe registration wheel into position to register one more point; When the bank is delivered to the depositor, it is explained to him that he will be given credit on his bank account for a certain sum for each point registered and showing through the opening 16. V The credit thus given is additional to the money deposited in the bank, and is a premium for the purpose of encouraging savings de-' posits. It is apparent, of course, that the chance which a depositor has, whenever he makes a deposit, of obtaining a premium, will create and maintain an interest in his savings account, and encourage him in advertising to others the banking establish ment which supplies its customers with banks provided with the present invention. Thus this invention serves the double purpose of encouraging savings accounts on the part of the depositor, and of advertising the business of the banking establishment which distributes the banks provided with the in vention.
I claim:
1. In combination, a receptacle for the accumulation of savings, register mechanism,

In combination, a receptacle for the accumulation of savings, means for rendering the contents of said receptacle inaccessible to the holder thereof, register mechanism, means operable in accordance with chance for controlling said register mechanism, and a device rendered operable by a coin deposited in said receptacle for operating said controlling means.

In combination, a receptacle for the accumulation of savings, a register device, mechanism operable in accordance with chance for controlling said register device, and means for operating said register control device rendered operable when a coin is deposited in said receptacle, to afford the depositor the chance given by the operation of said control mechanism of being per-. mitted tooperate said register device.
