To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. J ONES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Randolph, in the county of Dodge and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Surge'ons Knife, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Among the principal objects which the present invention has inview are: to provide a knife having a removable blade and means for holding the same rigidly in service position; to provide handles for knives of the character mentioned composed of parts which are separable to facilitate the sterilization or cleaning thereof; and to provide a handle which may be supplied with a va riety of blades. Desm-z'ptz'on.As shown in the drawings, the handle is primarily composed of two separable parts, to wit, the handle body 10 and the clamp plate 11. To receive the plate 11 the forward section of the handle is reduoed or cut away from the forward end of an abutment 12. The reduced portion 13 of.

the handle body 10 is provided with two or more passages 14, through which may be extended the ends 15 of bayonet connectors 16;

The passages 14 are elongated to corre- & spond' with, for permitting the passage,

therethrough of, the hook ends 15 of the connectors 16. In service the clamp plate 11 is shifted relative to the handle body 10 after the hook ends 15 have been protruded through the passages 14, the object being to force the hook ends 15 over the bearing surfaces 17 adjacent said passages 14, as shown best in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The back edge of the blade and the back edge of the shank 18 thereof have substantially the same thiclmess. The cutting edge 22 of the blade is suitably sharpened.

' It will be understood that the herein-described blades are produced and arranged in groups, the members of said groups being selected with regard to the service for which they are designed. All the blades have in common a shank 18 of a uniform size, and

all of the shanks are provided with a central opening 23, which opening is adapted to receive the connectors 16 and to register with the edges of the bases 24.

When constructed as above described, the parts are placed in service relation in the following manner: The blade 19 and'shank 18 thereof 'are placed in service position upon the clamp plate 11, and are moved thereon until an abutment 25 rests against the face 26 of the base 24 belonging to the connector 16 nearest what may be termed the rear end of the plate 11. The ends 15 are accommodated by the extended or handle body 10 is then adjusted to. said plate 11 and blade 19 and the passages 14 ad justed to receive the ends 15 on the plate 11. The ends15 having been passed through the passages 14, the plate :11 is .drawn toward the abutment 12 on the handle body 10, the ends 15 passing over the surfaces 17 until the detents 21 register with andlengage the indents 20. -When it is desired to separate the blade and parts of the handle, this is accomplished by reversing the operation above described. It is obvious that when so separated, the parts of the handle and the blade,'if desired,

may be thoroughly and perfectly sterilized and cleaned.

Claims:

l. A surgeons knife comprising a handle member provided with a rectangular abutment and having a plurality of passages disposed in spaced relation and longitudinally thereof; a clamp plate having a rectangular end; a cutting blade having a shank having a rectangular end and provided with a lon 'gitudinal opening for encompassing all of said passages in service; and means for rigidly uniting said clamp plate and said handle body, said means extending through said openings in said shank and said handle body, for holding said blade and clamp plate rigidly against the rectangular abutment of the handle member.

2. A surgeons knife comprising. a handle member having a reduced forward section terminating in a rectangular abutment,-said reduced portion having a plurality of stepped openings therethrough in spaced relation and longitudinally thereof, a clamp plate having a rectangular end, a cutting blade having a shank as a longitudinal extension, the shank having an elongated longitudinal opening therethrough for encompassing all of said passages in service, said opening having a straight wall at its rear end, a plurality of bayonet connectors rigidly mounted on the clamp plate project ing angularly therefrom, said connectors having hook ends adapted to pass through the openings in the handle and blade shank and to extend over said handle body adjacent the stepped openings to draw in clamped relation said clamp plate upon the blade shank, the step portion of said open ings in the handle section having indentations, and the hooked ends of the bayonet connectors having projections to spring into said indentations when the rectangular end of the clamp plate is forced against the rec tangular abutment of the handle.

3. A surgeons knife comprising a handle member having a reduced forward section terminating in a rectangular abutment, said reduced portion having a plurality of stepped openings therethrough in spaced relation and longitudinally thereof, a clamp plate-having a rectangular end, a cutting blade having a shank as a longitudinal extension, the shank having an elongated longitudinal opening therethrough for encom passing all of said passages in service, said opening having a straight wall at the rear end, a plurality of bayonet connectors rigidly mounted on the clamp plate projecting angularly therefrom, said connectors having hook ends adapted to pass through the openings in the handle and blade shank and to extend over said handle body adjacent the stepped openings to draw in clamped relation said clamp plate upon the blade shank, and means for locking the hooked ends within the step portions to hold the clamp plate against the rectangular abutment of the handle and against accidental displacement.
