A I" WIN/ 8858 lA/I/E/VTUR M42427? M Ma are I BY m5 W A TTORNEYS WILLIAM VINCENT MOORE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MOVABLE GUN-PORT COVER.
Specification of Iietters Patent.
Application filed September as, 1915. Serial No. 53,043.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM V. MOORE,
-a citizen of the United States, and a resi-v dent of the cityof New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Movable Gun-Port Cover, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to covering means for ports and particularly to a covering member for a gun port, and has for an object the provision of an improved construction whereby the entrance of water through the gun port is prevented without interfering with the proper manipulation of the Another object in view is to provide a cover for a gun port which may act-in the double capacity of a shield against bullets and a shield for preventing'the entrance of water. 1
A still further object in view is to provide a covering member for a port which will encircle the gun at one point but will allow the gun to be properly shifted. for sighting and allow a proper recoil of the gun in case the gun is of a recoil variety.
In the drawings the figure is a transverse section through a gun hood with an embodiment of the invention shown applied thereto.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates the top of a submarine boat or ship of any' kind and 2 the body of a hood, which body merges into a rounded front section?) provided with chambers 4 and 5 into which projects part of the cover 6. 'The rounded front section 3 is semi-globular and the cover 6 is made .of substantially the same shape so that it may be raised or lowered or moved from side to side, the movement being on the arc of a circle with point 7 as the center. Point 7 is the central pivotal point of the gun 8 whereby the gun may be easily adjusted to any desired position for firing without considering the cover 6 which automatically moves with the gun. v
A plurality of antifriction members 9 are provided in the front section 3 so as to allow a free easy movement of the cover 6. The cover 6 is preferably provided with an enlargement 1O centrally thereof, said enlargement being provided with a threaded aperture which receives the sleeve 11, said sleeve actlng as 'a stufiing box and receiving stufi- Patented June 6, 1916.
ing material 12 held in place by member 13 which is threaded into sleeve 11. A coneshaped member 14 is also provided, said cone-shaped member being secured to the gun 8 in any suitable manner, as for instance, by being shrunk thereon. Member. 1 1 is intended to fit into a suitable seat 15 in the sleeve 11 so as to insure a tight joint.
In case gun 8 is provided with a recoil the same may freely slide rearwardly without injuring or molesting in the least the cover 6, but is limited in its outward movement by member 14 and sleeve 11.
When the gun 8 is not being moved and it is desired to provide an absolutely watertight joint between cover 6 and front section 3, a plurality of wedging members 16 areutilized, the same being forced into the cutaway portion 17 v of section 3. In order to move the members 16 they areconnected with a plurality of bell crank levers 18. Two of the bell crank levers are also connected together by links 19 and 20 through an intermediate lever 21 while the remaining .bell crank levers are connected with the intermediate lever 21 by arm 22 and link 23. The side bell crank levers 18 are mounted on shaft 24: while the upper and lower levers 18 are mounted on shafts 25 and 26, respectively, these rods all being supported by suitable brackets connected to the front section 3 in any suitable manner. An operating rod 28 is connected with one of the bell crank levers 18 for moving the same and as this particular bell crank lever is operated the remaining bell crank levers are'also operated through the connecting mechanism just described whereby the various wedging members 16 are moved into notch 17 or therefromas desired. It will also be noted that by providing the cover 6 and wedging members 16 the gun 8 is held against movement when not in use, thus causing these parts to act as lashings for the gun.
' The cover 6, hood 2 and associated parts may be used with guns of any suitable size but are preferably designed for use on small boats, as for instance, submarines. If desired, air under pressure may be supplied to the opening chambers or spaces 4: and 5 by suitable pipes 29 and 30, thus expelling any water that attempts to enter these chambers and thereby allowing the cover 6 to freely move.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a gun adapted 'to be swiveled around a given point and also moved vertically, a hood for said gun, said hood being formed with a port through which the gun projects, a parti-globular cover engaging said hood, said cover having an aperture through which said gun projects, said hood being formed with a cham-. her for receiving part of said cover whereby.
the cover may be moved vertically or horizontally at will as the position of the gun is changed.
2. In a device of the character described, a hood provided with a semi-globular end, a chamber arranged in said end and conforming to the shape of the end, said end being provided with a gun port, a gun covering member for closing said port, said gun covering. member extending into said chamber and being movable vertically and horizontally in said chamber, and means arranged on said covering 'member for surrounding the gun extending therethrough whereby water is prevented from entering the hood.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with'a gun, of a hood therefor provided with a semi-globular end, said end being formed with a gun port through which said gun projects and a chamber, a parti-globular covering member for said port, said covering member extending in said chamber, and wedging means engaging said covering member for locking the same in any adjusted posit-ion.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM VINCENT MOORE.
