Be it known that l, RICHARD H. AnN'rznN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Serena, in the county of La Salle, State of illinois, have invented a new and luseful Gun; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and, use the same.
rlfhe invention relates to guns of the multiple barrel type, and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising a plurality of spaced gun barrels pi-votally mounted in a block, and having slidably mounted on their muzzle ends a yoke which cooperates with angularly disposed members carried by the muzzle end of the gun and forms means whereby the muzzle ends of the guns may be adjusted outwardly or inwardly in relation to each other. The outward or inward adjustment of the muzzle ends of the guns allowing a plurality of shells'to be hunched or spread as desired.
A further object is to provide gear and shaft means whereby the yoke may be moved inwardly and outwardly, said yoke being slidably mounted on a. centrally disposed gun barrel.
YV ith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through the gun.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the gun taken on line 22 of Figurey 1.
Figure 3 is a front view of the gun, showing the yoke block.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a stationary block which may be supported in any suitable manner by the arms 2 which rigidly hold the block 1 against movement. IThe block 1 is provided with a plurality of radially disposed elongated apertures 3, in which apertures are pivotally mounted the rear ends 4 of a plu rality of gun barrels 5. rlhe gun barrels 5 are so pivoted that they may pivot outwardly radially on their pivotal points 3a, the purpose of which will presently appear.
Rigidly secured in a .centrally disposed aperture 6 in the block 1 is a gun barrel 7, which gun barrel is centrally disposed in relation to the other gun barrels. 5, and does not move during the barrel adjusting operation hereinafter set forth.
VSlidably mounted on the muzzle end 8 of the gun barrel 7 isa yoke 9, which yoke is provided with forwardly and outwardly extending rectangular shaped apertures 10, which tangular shaped portions llcarried by the muzzle ends 12 of the gun barrels 5.y It will be seen that when the yoke 9 is movedin-` wardly in the direction of the arrow that the muzzle ends 12 of the gun barrels will be moved outwardly, thereby causing the shells 0r projectiles to be spread apart over a greater area, which is particularly advantageous in aircraft firing where the degrec of accuracy on account of the moving of the airplane is uncertain. Vhen the yoke 9 is moved outwardly in the direction of the arrow b, the muzzle ends 12 of the guns 5 will be moved inwardly thereby causing the shot or shell to be hunched. To accomplish the outward and inward movement of receive the angularly disposed rec-l the yoke 9 a plurality of shafts 13 is provided, each rod 13 having its forward endy provided with a threaded portion 14 which is threaded through the yoke 9. rlhe rear ends of the shafts 13 are rotatably mounted in bearings 15 in the block 1 and are provided with pinions 16 which mesh with a gear 17 loosely mounted on the breech end 18 of the gun 7. Gear 17 is provided with a bevel gear 19 whichsbevel gear is rotated through the medium of an operating gear 20, carried by an operating shaft 21. It will be seen that when the operator grasps the operating handle 22 that the gear 17 will be yrotated through the medium of the bevel gears 2O and 19 and that the shafts 13 will be simultaneously rotated through the medium of the pinion 16 thereby causing the yoke 9 to be adjusted inwardly or outwardly according to the direction of rotation of the shaft 21. The lugs 3", which form the pivotal points of the barrels 5 are preferably disposed inelongated slots 3c, which slots allow sufficient radial movement of the barrels 5 to allow the outward radial movement of the barrels 5 in relation to the axis of 'the centrally disposed barrel 7.
Any kind of ring mechanism may be utilized, however for purposes of illustration a block 23 is disposed adjacent the breeches 24C of theV gun barrels 5 and 7 and may be provided with any suitable mechanism for cooperating with the firing pins 25 car'- ried by the breeches 24.`
From the above it will be seen that a multiple gun is provided, which gun is simple in Aconstruction and. so constructed that the operator may easily and yquickly adjust the gun barrels inwardly andoutwardly in relation to each other, thereby allowing shot or shell from the various gun barrels to be spread or ycontracted 'as desired. It will also `be seen that a -gun is provided, which is vparticularlyadapted `for airplanes where extreme accuracy is practioall'y impossible. A
