T 0 all 'ZIhOITL it may concern Be it known that .we, CARLE A. M.-\TISSE and ALBERT C. Marissa, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Projecting Lamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to projecting lamps, and it has reference more particularly to means for concentrating the major part of the light from the lamp in the lower part of the reflector of the lamp.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient lamp which w1ll comply with the various ordinances of large cities without materially impairing .the light beam of the lamp.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is an axial section through our projecting lamp; and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the secondary reflector of the lamp.
Referring to the drawings, 3 is the casing of the lamp, in which a suitable reflector 4 is mounted. It may be a parabolic reflecting surface or a combination in the shape of a lens, as shown. A source of light 5 is provided in the focus of the reflector. The source of light is preferably mounted on a standard 6 which can be adjusted along the axis of the reflector through the medium of a screw 7.
Cooperating with the main reflector 4 of the lamp is a. secondary, three-quarters s herical reflector 8. The secondary reector is mounted in a casing 9 conformlng to the curvature of the reflector, and from which a bracket 10 extends along the standard 6. The bracket 10 has an elongated slot 11 engaged by a screw 12, whereby the secondary reflector may be adjustably secured to a bracket 13, the bracket 13, in turn, being adjustable on the standard. By means of the screw 12 the secondary reflector may be flector only receives light by reflection from i the lower horizontal part of the main reflector, for the secondary reflector prevents the direct radiation from the source of light to the upper part of the main reflector above the horizontal.
When the secondary reflector 8 is made of glass, the reflector must be made in two sections 14 and 15. One of the sections is semispherical, while the other is only one-quarter of a sphere. The semi-spherical portion 14 is preferably placed into the casing 9 totally above the horizontal plane passing through the axis of the lamp. In consequence the section 15 of the reflector will be below that plane. By an arrangement as above described, it is possible to use the lamp within cities where special ordinances have been passed forbidding the use of undimmcd projecting lamps. This is due to the fact that the light from the upper part of the main reflector, which is the most objectionable is eliminated, while the non-objectionable part of the light, which is in the lower part of the main reflector. is. concentrated. The casing 9 is preferably polished on its exterior surface to reduce light absorption to a minimum.

1. In a projecting lamp, :1 main reflector, a source of light in the axis thereof. and a three-quarters spherical secondary reflector main reflector, the missing quarter of said reflector facing the lower, horizontal half of the main reflector.
