Description
UNI'rEn STATES OLIVER HYDE, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TUBULAR STEAM-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,613, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER HYDE, of Oakland, county of Alameda, State of California, have invented Improvements in Tubular Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are suflicient to enable an y person skilledin the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or in'iprovements without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to that class of steamboilers through which vertical lines or heat-passages extend upward from the lire-place in order to permit the heat from the furnace to be brought into more intimate contact with the water in the boiler, and thus be the means of increasing its steam generating capacity. My improvement consists in surrounding each of these flues or heat-passages with a shell or tube of larger diameter than the flues themselves, so as to leave a space or jacket between the two.
The shells are open both at the bottom and top, so as to permit a circulation of water between the outside and inclosed jacket of the shell at the bottom, and an escape for the steam at the top.
In order to explain my invention so that oth ers can understand its construction and operation, reference is had to the accompanying drawing` forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a section of a boiler showing the tubes with their surrounding shells. Figs. 2 and 3 represent other forms of the diaphragm.
A represents a section of the top, and B a corresponding section of the bottom part of any steam-boiler. C C O are vertical tubes or flues which pass directly through the boiler from bottom to top, through which the products of combustion can pass from the fire-place to the smokestack, so as to give a large amount of heatingsurface for producing steam. Around each of the tubes C I place a shell or tube, D, of larger diameter than the tubes C, but much shorter. Two or more longitudinal ribs or vanes, e, are secured to the inside of the shells D at equal distances apart, their extremities extending beyond the shells at each end, so as to provide legs or supports to prevent the ends of the shells from comin g in contact with the boiler and thus closing the passage to the space or jacket between the tubes C and D. The ribs prevent the outer shell from being' shifted out of place by preserving a uniform space on all sides. In the present instance three ribs are shown, but any number can be employed, or simple projections may be used instead.
In operation, the heat from the furnace passing upward through the numerous llues or heat-passages O will readily heat the water in thejacket or space between the tubes C and shells I) to the steam-generating point. The steam thus generated will rise in this jacket to the steamspace above the water in the boiler, and, by producing a partial vacuum in the jacket, cause the cooler water in the boiler to be drawn into the jacket at the bottom, thus producing a constant circulation of water in the boiler. By confining the water which is to be subjected to the greatest heat in the space or jacket, the steam which is generated from it rises into the steam-space above without becoming cooled or saturated with water of a low temperature, as would be the case if it had to pass through a body of water more remote from the heating-surface than at the point where it was generated.
Figs. 2 and 3 represent other forms of dia phragms that may be used instead of the shells D by inclosing each four tubes or dividing them olf by partitions for the above-named purpose.

In steam-boilers having` vertical tlues or heatpassages C, the surrounding shells or tubes D provided with ribs e, said ribs being extended so as to form legs at each end, all as and for the purpose above described.
