Be it known that I,
('husetts, have invented certain Improvements in Cutting-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several fig ures.
This invention relates to cuttin machines, and particularly to machines or cutting blanks from-sheet material by means of a die.
In a more particular aspect the invention contemplates improvements in a type of machine known as the clicking machine, the most general use of which at the present time is for dieing out uppers in the manufacture of boots and shoes.

By this invention such disadvantages are avoided through the provision of separate presser members each operatively related to a different portion of the bed and movable to expose the bed for t e purposes referred to, and neither of which is sufliciently cumbersome to be difficult to manipulate or to require great power for its operation. The preferred construction includes presser members mounted swing about upright axes at opposite sides of the bed and each extending over the bed to substantially the middle thereof, either of said members being arranged for operation independently of the other and movable independently about its axis to expose the bed to view and to bring it into operative relation to the die wherever the latter may be placed upon the bed within the range of operation of the corresponding presser member.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the machine, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
In the machine illustrated the cutting block or bed 2 is supported upon a table 4: that is bolted at opposite sides to supporting frame members 6. The opposite side portions of the machine, including the frames 6, are substantial duplicates and embody, except as hereinafter noted, features of well known construction such as are found in a type of machine in extensive use in the manufacture of boots and shoes. Briefly stated, these features include a post 8 mounted vertically for reciprocatory and turningmovements in bearings in the frame, and a presser member 10 which is attached to the post and may be swung by means of a handle 12 thereon to different positions over the cutting bed. The handle 12 may also be moved vertically upon a rod 1 on the pressure member, and thereby imparts movement through an arm 16 to a lever 18 pivoted at 20 to the frame 6 and connected by a rod 22 with means for actuating mechanism which imparts reciprocatory movement to the post 8 and the presser member to effect the cutting operation. This mechanism comprises a suitable form of one-revolution non-repeating clutch located within the flange 24 of the loose pulley 26, whereby the pulley is connected to the shaft upon which it is mounted so as to impart at each actuation of the clutch a single revolution to the shaft and thereby a single reciprocation to the post with which the shaft is suitably connected.
The foregoing features are set forth more in detail in United States Patent 921,503 to Arthur Bates, dated May 11, 1909, and in United States Patent 1,011,903 to Arthur Bates, dated Dec. 19, 1911, the former showing the general features of a machine of this type, and the latter an approved form of operating mechanism. It will be understood that in this type of machine the sheet of material to be cut is spread upon the cutting bed, a die is placed in the desired position upon the material, and the presser member is then swung by means of the handle 12 to a position over the die. The same handle is then quickly depressed, which serves to actuate the clutch and causes the presser member to descend and strike the die and to return immediately to its former position. The presser member may then be swung aside to permit the operator to view the stock and place the die in another position thereon, after which the same operations may be repeated.
In the machine wherein this invention is embodied the cutting bed is sufficiently wide to accommodate the full width of the stock, which is shown in Fig. 1 at 28 with a die 30 in position thereon. The posts 8 are mounted at opposite sides of the bed, and the presser members swing in a plane substantially parallel to the surface of the bed and are each of sufficient length to extend inwardly approximately to the middle of the bed. In the preferred construction the posts 8, or the axes of the presser members, are located somewhat nearer to the front of the bed than to the rear thereof. This brings the presser members conveniently within reach of any operator and assures besides that underany conditions that portion of the material at the front of the bed may be cut without moving the material to one side or the other. The handles 12 also, as shown clearly on Fig. 2, are for the operators convenience each located somewhat nearer that side of the presser member which is at the front of the machine. trough 32 serves to support any of the material that may project over the edge of the bed at the rear. At the sides of the bed are troughs 34 which serve as receptacles for scraps and prevent the material, if moved too far to one side or the other, from coming in contact with the movable posts 8 or with the bearings.
The manner of using this machine will be sufficiently evident from the preceding description and from the fact that, in general, well known features of operation are involved. It will be understood that with the material placed upon the bed the opererator makes use of one presser member or the other depending upon what particular portion of the material receives the die. While one presser member is in use the other may be swung aside, preferably to the rear, so as to admit the light and afford a view of the stock. After the portion near the front of the bed has been cut, the material may, if desired, be moved forwardly to bring the rear portions closer to the operator.
It will be apparent that the arrangement of a single handle whereby each presser member may be swung to the desired posi tion and the operative movement thereof subsequently effected is of special efficacy in a machine of this construction, wherein two presser members are provided, as contributing to economy of movement on the part of the operator.
Although I have disclosed the invention as embodied in a machine having the specific features of construction shown and escribed, it will be understood that. the invention in its broader aspects is not thus restricted in its application, but that various other embodiments are comprehended within the spirit and scope thereof of the claims.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is the following: I
1. In a machine of the class described, the combination. with a cutting bed presenting an uninterrupted cutting surface, of a presser member movable over a portion of the bed to different operative positions with respect thereto, and a Second presser member movable to different operative positions over substantially the remaining portion of the bed, both of said presser members being located at all times within convenient reach' of an operator standing in front of the bed.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a cutting bed presenting an uninterrupted cutting surface, of a presser member movable over a ortion of the bed to different operative posltions with respect thereto, and a second presser member movable to different operative positionswherever placed upon one portion of the bed, and a second presser member movable into and out of operative position with respect to a die placed in any position upon substantially the remaining portion of the bed, both of said presser members being lo cated at all times Within convenient reach of an operator standing in front of the bed.
4. In a machine of the class described, the' combination with a cutting bed presenting an uninterrupted cutting surface, of a presser member movable into and out of operative position with respect to a die wherever placed upon one portion of the bed, and a second presser member movable into and out of operative positionwith respect to a die placed in any position upon substantially the remaining portion of the bed, and means for imparting operative movement to either of said presser members independently of the other to effect the cutting operation, both of said presser members being located at all times within convenient reach of an operator standing in front of the bed.
5. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a cutting bed presenting an uninterrupted cutting surface, of presser members movable in a plane substantially parallel to the face of the bed to different selected operative positions with respect to the bed, said members having different respective paths of movement corresponding to different portions of the area of the bed and together having operative relation to substantially all portion: of the bed, both of Said presser members being located at all times within convenient reach of an operator standing in front of the,bed.
6. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a cutting bed presenting an uninterrupted cutting surface, of presser members extending over the bed from opposite sides approximately to the middle of the bed and movable transversely to thelr directions of extension, and meansfor imparting operative movement to either of said presser members independently of the other.
7. In a machine for cutting sheet material by means of a die, the combination with a cutting bed presenting an uninterrupted cutting surface, of presser members mounted respectively at opposite sides of the bed and each constructed to extend over the bed approximately to the middle thereof, said presser members being movable laterally over the bed to afford the operator an unobstructed view of the stock while placing the die.
8. In a machine of the class described, the i combination with a cutting bed presenting an uninterrupted cutting surface, of presser members mounted respectively at opposite sides of the bed to swing in a plane substantially parallel to the face of the bed to different positions above the bed, said members being independently movable toward the bed from any of said positions thereabove to effect the cutting operation and together.

10. In a machine of the class described, the v combination with a cutting bed presenting an uninterrupted cutting surface, of a pair of presser members each independently movable into and out of operative position with respect to substantially a different half of the bed, a manually operative member carried by each of said presser members whereby such movement of the member may be effected, and mechanism for imparting to either of said presser members independently of the other operative movement toward the bed, each of said manually operative members being movable with respect to the presser member whereon it is mounted and connected to actuate said mechanism for imparting an operative movement to said presser member.
11. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a cutting bed presenting an uninterrupted cutting surface, of presser members extending inwardly over the bed from opposite sides and mounted to swing to difierent positions with respect to the bed, a manually operative member carried by each of said presser members whereby such movement of the member may be effected,-and mechanism for imparting to either of said presser members independently of the other operative movement toward the bed, each of said manually operative members being movable with respect to the presser member whereon it is mounted and connected to actuate said mechanism and being mounted nearer to that side of the presser member which is at the front of the machine.
