SAMUEL E. HARSI-I, OF WABASH, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO ROSETTA M. HARSI-I, OF WABASI-I, INDIANA.
HINGE.
Application filed October 1, 1915.
citizen of the United States, residing at' lVabash, in the county of l/Vabash and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door hinges, more especially the screen door type or class.
The invention has for its object to provide effectively against the casual detachment of the hinge from its attaching bracket or the tendency toward such detachment as hereto.-
fore experienced in the use of this class of hinges.
A further object is to greatly simplify and lessen the number of parts to effect the aforesaid end; also to dispense with the use of retaining means such as would be liable to work or jar loose from such source.
The invention consists therefore of means effecting connection between the hinge and its attaching bracket of a character to guard against the withdrawal of the hinge-leaf tongue from its keeper under the jarring or swinging action of the door.
The invention consists further of a resilient means adapted to effect connection between the hinge-pintle and lateral outstanding shoulder-forming flanges of the attaching bracket.
The invention consists still further of means of connection between the hinge and its attaching bracket whereby the hinge-leaf tongue, received by a keeper on said attaching bracket, will be effectively prevented from casual withdrawal from said keeper.
The invention consists still further of the combination, arrangement and construction of parts substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and pointed out by the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings is disclosed the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be Specification of Letters Patent.

made as to the detailed construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the scope of the claims, and in which draw- 1ngs Figure l is a front elevation or face view of my improved hinge. Fig. 2 is also a front elevation of the same, the parts, however, being disassembled. Fig. 3 is a plan or end view of the invention, the bail-like member being additionally shown in dotted lines in its inoperative or released position. Fig. 4 is a horizontal or transverse section taken centrally through the hinge and its attaching bracket. Fig. 5 is a section taken through Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is detached or disassembled face view of one hinge-leaf, that having the tongue received by a keeper on the attacking bracket. Figs. 7 and 8 are end views of the hinge-leaves disassembled. Fig. 9 is a like view of the attaching bracket.
1n carrying out my invention, 1 suitably V formvthe hinge, generally designated as 1, of
two leaves 2 and 3, the primary leaf 2 being attached by screws 4, or otherwise, to the door or closure 5 and the minor leaf 3 being hinged to the aforesaid leaf 2, both leaves having upraised end flanges 6 and 7, respectively, through which is passed the pintle 8 effecting such hinging connection. A suitable helical or coiled spring 9, as usual, is applied to the pintle 8 with its terminals 10, 11 bearing upon the primary leaf and the leaf 3.
The attaching bracket, designated as 12, is secured to the j amb or door-frame 13 by the screws 14 or otherwise and has a keeper 15 upraised therefrom, which latter receives a tongue 16 of the minor hinge-leaf 3 as clearly seen in Figs. 1, 4 and 5, and as suggested by Fig. 2, these only providing for the direct application of the minor hingeleaf to the attaching bracket or its alinement therewith; the latter, however, it will be seen, has end-flanges 17 in addition to an inner edge flange 18 at right-angles to the flanges 17, said flange 18 being screwed as at 19 or otherwise secured to the jamb or door-frame. The flanges 17 of the attaching bracket have provided therein, adjacent the base of the bracket, slots 20 which receive the minor hinge-leaf 3 adjacent its ends, in-
termediate the flanges 7 thereof, thus pro- A bail-like member 21, with looped or curved terminals 22 applied or hooked over projecting portions of the pintle 8 of the hinge is adapted to be sprung or snapped over the corner-edges 23 of the flanges 17 of the attaching bracket 12, into notches or recesses 24 in the vertical edges of said flanges, and thus provide for the retention of said member 21 and accordingly the effective retention of the tongue 16 of the hinge-leaf in the keeper or socket 1 5 of the attaching bracket, thereby guarding effectually against the casual detachment of the hinge from its attaching bracket under the jarring action transmitted thereto in the opening and closing of the door or closure. As above indicated, this is provided for without the use of appliances, as set screws and the like, which are quite liable to jar loose and lose their holding action as has been experienced in practical use, besides invoking the aid of adjuncti've parts, and rendering the device complicated and expensive.
I claim 1. A hinge of the type described, including its leaves and an attaching bracket, said bracket having end flanges, a bail-like member on said leaves arranged to snap over and be retained by said flanges and separable means of connection between said hinge and said bracket.
2. A hinge of the type described, including its leaves and an attaching bracket, means of connection between said hinge and said bracket, said bracket having end flanges provided with recesses in their vertical edges, and a bail-like member on said leaves arranged to be sprung over the corner-edges of said flanges and be retained in said recesses.
3. A hinge of the type described, including its attaching bracket, means eifecting connection between said hinge and said bracket, said bracket having end flanges pro- ,vided with slots, one leaf of the hinge having a member thereof received by said slots, and a bail-like member having pivotal connection with the hinge pintle and arranged to be sprung over the corner-edge of said flanges and be retained thereby to guard against the casual detachment of said hingeleaf from said attaching bracket.
In testimony whereof, I atfix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
