To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLI'AM S. SAMP- SON, a citizen of the United States, anda resident ofOakland, in the. county of Ala meda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing-Rulers, of whichfthe following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in drawing rulers, and the invention has for its object to provide a ruler of the character specified, adapted for the use of architects, draftsmen and the like, wherein a ruler is mounted on a drawing board or table in such manner that it may be moved from end to end of the table or board, whileretaini'ng its transverse position with respect to the board or table, and wherein the ruler is provided with a guide extending longitudinally thereof, for guiding a carriage with'respect to the ruler, and wherein a second ruler is connected with the carriage in such manner as to permit the said ruler to beheld at vary' ing angles with respect to the first named ruler.

The table is, as before stated, pivotally connected with the standards or uprightsv to permit the table to be swung with respect to the standards or uprights, and the'tableis held in'adjusted positionby I'ne'a'nsof an arc-shapedslotted arm 6,which is connected to one end of the table at one side" thereof, and the slot of the arm is engaged by a head- 7 7 on one of the uprights or standards, tohold the table in adjusted position. i

The wheels at the bottom or rear ofthe table are mounted on independent stub shafts- 10, while the wheels 8 at the top or front of the table are secured to the ends of a shaft 10, which extends the full width of the table and the shafts 10 and 10 are mounted in bearings 1.1 on the board or table. Each chain is provided with an upstanding beading lug 12, the lugs 12 transversely of the table. A shaft or roller 13 is arranged between the chains, on the upper surface of the table, and headed screws 14 are passed through the lugs at each side of the table, and into engagement with the ends of the roller to mount the roller between the chains. The lugs 12 are of such height, that the roller 13 will be spaced slightly above the upper surface of the table, to permit the roller to be moved longitudinally of the table by the chain.
A ruler 15 1s connected to the shaft, the said ruler having its front or upper edge I beveled as shown at 16, and havmg at its rear edge open bearings 17, for engaging the shaft 13. The beveled edge of the ruler is graduated, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2, in units of any desired character, and
the said ruler is provided in its upper face with a longitudinally extending groove 18 extending the full length, of the ruler.
A carriage or slide plate 19'is mounted on the ruler, for movement longitudinally thereof, and the said plate has a rib 20 on its under face and near its rear edge, and it will be noticed from an inspection of Fig. 5, that one wall of the rib is undercut. The rib islof a 'siZe to fit within the groove'18, and to move in the groove with the under surface of'the plate engaging the upper surface of the ruler, and a holding plate 21 is provided for preventing disengagement of the carriage or sliding plate 19. Theupper' surface of the ruler 15 is enlargedor rabbeted in front of the groove 18, and the holdingplate fits within the rabbet or counterbore, and engages the undercut wall oflthe rib, to hold the slide platein place. The plate 21 is held in place by screws 22 or the like, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawing, and since the rear edge of the plate'engages the undercut wall of the groove, the plate cannot move upward to disengage the rib 20 from the groove.

belng 1n register by means of a pivot pin or rivet 24, and it will be noticed from an inspection of Fig. 2, that the ruler 23 has both side edges beveled, and one of the side edges is provided with a scale, as shown. The edge of the plate 19 remote from the ruler 15 is rounded or curved on an arc whose center is the pivot pin 24. At the said edge the plate 19 has an are shaped slot 25, and a headed pin or screw 26 on the ruler 23 is passed through the slot and into engagement with the ruler-93, to hold the ruler in adjusted position with respect to the plate 19.
The particular arrangement of the rulers 15 and 23 permits the user to dispense with the ordinary T-square and the triangles, since an angle of any desired degree may be laid off with the rulers 15 and 23.
The roller or shaft 13 cannot change its position transverse to the table, because of the fact that the chains at each side move together. By means of this mounting, the ruler 15 may move from one end of the table to the other, and cannot become displaced with respect to the table.
The ruler 23 may be moved as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, to hold any desired angular position with respect to the ruler 15. The table may be adjusted by means of the elements 67, but it is obvious that the improved ruler might be mounted on any drawing table.
I claim:
\ 1. In combination with a drawing table, of a shaft journaled transversely of the table at one end thereof, sprocket wheels secured to the ends of the shaft, a sprocket wheel journaled at the other end of the table at each side thereof and in register with the adjacent sprocket wheel of the shaft, sprocket chains mounted on the wheels at each side of the table, each chain having an upstanding bearing lug, and the lugs of the chains being in alinement transverse to the table, a roller held in the lugs, a ruler detachably connected with the roller and movable therewith, said ruler having a guide groove in its upper face, a slide plate having a rib for engaging the groove, and a second ruler pivoted to the slide plate to swing to either side thereof and having means for holding the said ruler in adjusted position, the first named ruler having means for preventing disengagement of the rib of the slide plate.
2. In combination with a drawing table, of a shaft journaled transversely of the table at one end thereof, sprocket wheels secured to the ends of the shaft, a sprocket wheel journaled at the other end of the table at each side thereof and in register with the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the adjacent sprocket wheel of the shaft, sprocket chains mounted on the wheels at each side of the table, each chain having an upstanding bearing lug, and the lugs of the chains being in alinement transverse to the table, a roller held in the lugs, a ruler detachably connected with the roller and movable therewith, said ruler having a guide groove in its upper face, a slide plate having a rib for engaging the groove, and a second ruler pivoted to the slide plate to swing to either side thereof and having means for holding the said ruler in adjusted position.
3. In combination with a drawing table, of a shaft ournaled transversely of the table at one end thereof, sprocket wheels secured to the ends of the shaft, a sprocket wheel journaled at the other end of the table at each side thereof and in register with the adjacent sprocket wheel of the shaft, sprocket chains mounted on the wheels at each side of the table, each chain having an upstanding bearing lug, and the lugs of the chains being in allnement transverse to the table, a roller held in the lugs, a ruler detachably connected with the roller and movable therewith, a slide'mounted for movement longitudinally of the first named ruler, and a second ruler pivoted to the slide and having means for holding the said second ruler in adjusted position with respect to the slide.
4. In combination with a drawing table, of a shaft j ournaled transversely of the table at one end thereof, sprocket wheels secured to the ends of the shaft, a sprocket Wheel journaled at the other end of the table at each side thereof and-in register with .the adjacent sprocket wheel of the shaft, sprocket chains mounted on the wheels at each side of the table, a roller mounted between the chains and connected with the chains to move therewith, a ruler detachably connected with the roller, a slide movable on the ruler from end to end thereof, and a sec ond ruler pivoted to the slide and having means for holding the same in adjusted position with respect to the slide.
5. In combination with a drawing table, of a roller arranged transversely of the table, means in connection with the table for moving the roller from end to end of the table and for constraining the roller to more in a position transverse to the table, a ruler detachably connected with the roller, a slide mounted to move longitudinally of the ruler, and a second ruler pivoted to the slide.
