WASHINGMACINE.
Application led September 14, 1915. Serial No. 50,649.
Be it known that I, HENRY C. a citizen of theUnited States, residing at i'lechanicsburg, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new .and useful Improvements in'Vilashing-Machines, oi. which the,
following isa specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certainnew and useful improvements upon my patent tor washing machine granted to me on March 3l), 1915. Number LlBSQO, the object being to iiuprovethe general construction and to provide means for mountingr the plungerinr such a manner that the saine can be swung to one side or" the'tuh 'when 1n raised po ,sition in order to allow the clothes to be inserted. or removed therefrom.
i Another object of my invention is to iinprove.l the general construction of plunger so as to increase the agitation of the clothes within Ythe receptacle whereby the water will be forced through the mass of clothes in the up and down stroke of the plunger.
)ther and further obiects and advantages ot' the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawingsz--Figure l is avertical section of my improved construction of washing' machine showing the driving mechanism in elevation, and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View oi' a portion of the receptacle showing the manner of mounting the driving mechanism to allow the same to be swung to one side ot' the receptacle.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several'iigures of the drawings.
In the drawings7 1 indicates a main cylindrical receptacle mounted upon legs 2 so as to support the Same in elevated position, said receptacle being` formed of any suitable .material and having -a perforated false bottoni 3 arranged therein which is slightly spaced from the bottom of the receptacle l, and on which is mounted a numher ot coil springs 4 in any suitable manner forming a yielding` support for the sup plemcnt-al receptacle 5 arranged concentrical within the outer receptacle l, and provided with a Perforated bottom G, as clearly shown. The bottom of the receptacle 5 and the false bottoni 3 are preferably provided with studs over which the ends of the coil `springs are arranged .so-as to hold the same STAMM, y
Specification of Letters Patent. .Pggggitgd Mig? 3Q? inthe proper positions. rEhe outer receptacle is provided with the usual drainv'?, having a valve 8 constructed substantially as shown in .my patent. `An inlet T--9 is also connected to the bottoniI of the outer receptacle. to one4 branch of which is connected a steam pipe l0, provided with'a valve pipe 11 for controlling` the flow of steam and air therethrough, the other branch ot' the T being provided iwfith a Awater inlet4 l2 and a valve 13 for controlling the flow of water into the receptacle.
The outer receptacle 1 is provided with oppositely -disposed outwardly projecting pivot pins ist. on which are pivotally mounted supporting members 15 carrying arms 1G and 17. provided with tubular guides 16 and 17 in which are mounted guide rods 1S, carrying` bearing sleeves 19 at their up per ends which are pivotally mounted upon bearings 20, formed on the ends of the cross bar 21, as clearly showniin Fig. l.
The cross har 21 is provided with a cenn tral threaded bearingi 2Q in which is mounted a threaded upper end 23 of a. plunger rodQt, which is provided with a hand wheel for 'i'evolving the same in order to adjust thepositioii of the plunger rod within the bearing; for the purpose hereinafter fully described. The lower end of the plunger rod 24 extends into a vertically disposed sleeve Q6, carried By a head 27 which. fits snugly within the inner receptacle 5, said sleeve being provided with oppositely disposed slots "38. through which extends a pin 29, carried by the plunger rod in order to allow the plunger rod to slide within the sleeve, the plunger rod-being surrounded by a coil spring 30 betiv'e'en the cross bar 21 and the upper end of theisleeve Q6, as clearly shown. forming Va yieldingr connection between the plunger rod and plunger head 27, soyas to prevent the saine from being injured when the same is reciprocated through the driving mechanism which will be later described.
'Thehead 27-is provided with an annular depending flange 31 -forming a vacuum cup having a valve 32. and arranged within the head is a series of vacuum cups 33, provided with valves 34 so as to allow the washinefluid to pass throue'h the cups on the down stroke of the plunger and on the up strolv a partial vacuum is created within said cup and head so as to draw th clothes within the inner receptacle upwardl;
with 'the plunger in order to subject the clothes to a pounding action as well as to an agitation caused by the clothes being lifted up and down within the receptacle by the vacuum action ofthe head.
ln order to provide means for recpirocating the cross bar 21, secure to 'the bottom of the outer receptacle 1, bearings 35, in which is mounted a drive shaft 36, provided with drive wheels 37 at its ends, carrying wrist pins 38, to which are connected pitman rods 39, the upper ends of which are pivotally mounted on the ends ot' the vbearings 20, of the cross bar 21 as shown at 40. The drive shaft 36 is provided with a loosely mounted drive gear Ll1 having a female clutch portion L12 adapted to cooperate with a. male clu'ich member 43, keyed on the shaft 36 and operated in the usual manner so as to lock said drive gear 41 to the drive shaft 36 when it is desired to drive the mechanism in order to reciprocate the plunger, and by this construction the drive connection can be readily disconnected in order to stop the plunger on its up stroke so that the same can be swung to one side of the receptacle to 'facilitate the inserting or removing of the clothes therefrom.
The lower ends of the supporting members 15are provided with spring actuated pins 44: which coact with the sockets 45 having inclined faces so as to allow the pins to ride up said face into said socket when the supporting members are thrown into Vertical position .so as to hold the' guides rigid when the cross bar is in central position over the receptacle, and it will be seen by this construction the guides for the guide rods 13 are so mounted that by drawing outwardly on the pins to release the supports, the cross bar can be swung laterally from over the center ot the receptacle and as the pitman rods are pivotally connected to the ends of the cross bar for moving on their bearings so as to allow the plunger to be swung laterally when in a horizontal plane.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that l have provided a washing machine in which the reciprocating plunger is mounted within a cross bar, supportedby guide rods mounted in removable bearings in such. a 'manner that said bearings can be swung laterally in respect to the receptacle in order to remove the plunger when a anged in the plane of the'receptacle laterally, so that the clothes can be readily inserted and removed from the tub, the driving connection being so connected to the cross bar, that the bar is free to move when the wrist pins oi the drive wheels are in raised position. lit will also be seen that l have provided means for locking the removablesupports in vertical position so as to guide the plunger when being reciprocatcd -in such a manner that all danger of the mechanism being injured is prevented.
