Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30 ftl ffi.
Application filed July 1, 1915. Serial No. 37,582.
To all whom it may concern .1
Be it known that I, CHARLES BAUMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county-of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Finger- Guards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in finger guards adapted to be employed 1n cutting or slicing elongated articles suchas sausage and the like, the object of the mvention being to provide an improved construction of this character which will uard the fingers against injury and material y assist in the slicing operation.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompan in drawing forming a part of this speci cation, and in which,
Figure 1 is a rear view of'a construction embodying my invention, and Fig. 2, a side view of the same shown in position of use.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a knife guide plate 3 provided on its rear with finger sockets 4 and 5 of different lengths adapted to accommodate the fore and middle finger of the left hand of the user, said plate being held by the hand in an inclined position, as indicated in Fig. 2. The lower portion 6 of plate 3 is angularly bent with reference to thebody thereof so as to more Sockets 4 and 5 are provided with closed bottoms and ventilating openings 8 are provided, as shown. An opening 9 is provided at the extreme top of plate 3 by means of which the guard may be suspended on a nail or similar support.
In use the guard is engaged by the fore and middle finger of the left hand of the user, as indicated in Fig. 2, and is placed over an elongated article such as a sausa e,
the recess 7 accommodating the artic e. Then the article is sliced by passing the knife downwardly against the face of plate 6, the guard being moved along the article after each slicing operation. The device will protect the fingers from the knife and constitutes a guide for the knife, thus greatly facilitating slicing or similar operations.
\Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrymg my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A finger guard .comprising a knife guide plate presenting a substantially smooth fiat surface to the knife; and finger sockets on the rear of said plate, substantially as described.
2. A finger guard comprising a knife,
guide plate presentinga substantially smooth fiat surface to the knife recessed at the bottom to accommodate an article to be cut; and finger sockets on the rear of said plate, substantially as described.
3. A finger guard comprising a knife guide plate presentinga substantially smooth flat surface to the knife; and finger sockets on the rear of said plate, the bottoms of. said sockets being closed, there being ventilating openings in said sockets, substantially as described.
4. A finger guard comprising a knife guide plate presenting a substantially smooth fiat surface to the knife recessed at the bottom to accommodate an article to be cut; and finger sockets on the rear of said plate,
there being ventilating openings in said sockets, substantially as described.
5. A finger guard comprisin a knife guide plate presenting a su stantially smooth fiat surface to the knife recessed at the bottom to accommodate an article to be cut; and finger sockets on the rear of said plate arranged to be engaged by the fingers to hold said plate in an inclined position, the lower end of said plate being angularly turned to more nearly approach the vertical, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES BAUMANN. Witnesses:
JOSHUA R. H. Por'rs, HELEN F. LILLIS.
