REFRIGERATOR-CAR DRAIN.

Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, 1916.
Application led September 11, 1915. Serial No. 50,270.
Theinvention relates to improvements in refrigerator car drains.
Heretofore considerable difficulty has been experienced with the refrigerator car drains incommon and much damage and loss to railroads have been incurred through the flooding of cars due to stoppage of the drain pipe which inthe ordinary yconstruction in present use has an interiorly arranged trap `which cannot be seeiiand vinspected and which 'has to be cleaned by a rod. Furthermore with the drain in. ordinary use it is `customary in cold weather to plug up the drain pipe with waste or straw which is fre thereby causing a flooded car that is not discovereduntil the car reaches its destination.
The object of the present invention is to obviate the aforesaid objections and improve the 'construction of refrigerator car drains and to provide a simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive drain having an eX- teriorly arranged trap adapted Ato be readily inspected and cleaned if necessary.
A further object of the invention is to provide arefrigerator car drain., adapted through the motion of a refrigerator car to automatically throw out any accumulation of cinders or the like so that cleaning of the drain will be renderedfunnecessary.
l out in the claims hereto appended, it being Another object of the invention is to provide a refrigerator car drain adapted to vary the size of the outlet or discharge and also to entirely close the same during winter and thereby obviate the necessity ofy plug` ging the drain of a refrigerator car. f
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel `,combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed understood that various changes iii the formtproportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the-,spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
. In the drawings Figure 'l is a side eleva,- tion of a refrigerator car drain and air eX- cludenconstructed in accordance with this invention, F ig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the refrigerator car drain.
and air eXcluder, Fig. Atis a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line LT-4 o f Fig. 3, `Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view illustrating the construction of the catch for locking the trough or chute of the drain in its adjustment.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In -tlie accompanying drawings, l desig- I nates a drain pipe of an ice bunker or compartment of a refrigerator car, not shown,
provided with a iiared upper portion 2 con- `nected to and preferably formed integral with a horizontal plate 3. The drain pipe l and the plate 2 may be constructed of malleable metal or'any other suitable material which is also true of the other parts of the device as any suitable material may be employed in the construction thereof.4
Thetop plate 3 is provided with bolt openings for. the reception of bolts 4 arranged vertically and also passing through slots 5 of stems or attaching portions 6 of clamping members which have approximately semi-circular yportions 7 forming bearings and adapted to support a low'er tubular sec* tion 8 composed of an upper cylindrical portion 9, a lower rectangular or square portion 10 and a horizontal plate or flange l1 arranged upon and supported by the semi-circular bearing portions The clamping members are angularly bent at l2 to form shoulders for engaging the edge of the plate or flange which is preferably circular to enable the lower tubular section and the trough or chute 14 carried by the tubular section to rotate whereby the trough or chute is prevented from being brushed oif should it come in contact with an lobject when turned transversely of the car. The outer portions of the shank (i are'provided with perforations i5 for the recepn tion of screws or other suitable fastening' end of the same and is arranged in spaced justment by means of 'acatch consisting of a relation with the said cylindrical portion 9 as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawin s.
The lower rectangular portion 10 o the lower section has straight parallel sides and \it is tapered to form lower inclined edges 16 at the said sides to coact with the `bottom 17 of the trough or chute which is arranged at an inclination and whichis movable to adjust the bottom 17 toward and from the inclined edges 1G to vary thesize, of the open-y ings ofthe lower section of the drain and also to close the drain when desired to obviate the necessity of plugging the same.
at 18 to the lower rectangular portion of the,4
The trough is provided below the rectangular portion 10 with a curved partition 27 extending fromA the bottom of the trough to a point above the outlet of the lower tubular member 8 and terminating short of the upper edges of the sides and presenting a concaved upper face. vThe curved partition 27 which extends transversely of the trough forms an uppertrap receptacle for holding the water resulting from the melting of the ice to submerge the lower end ,ofA
the tubular section 8. Also the drainpipe by extending below the upper edge of the cylindrical portion 9 enables the water to. drop clear of the sides of the tubular member 8 and prevents accumulation of-ice in cold weather which stops the drain pipe now in use. The sides 14 of the 4chute/are in suiicient Contact with the side ofthe section 10, to prevent air or gases from passing laterally through the opening formed ,between the bottom 16 of the section 10 and the chute 17. Any cinders or similar accu-y mulation .lr-ollecting in the trap will be within a tubular casing 23' jarredor jolted out of the same by the motion of the. car. The transverse partition may be omitted if desired. Also the open trough is adapted to afford ready accessto the trap and will enable any accumulation of ice in cold weather to-be readily removed.
' What is claimed iszf- 1. A drain for refrigerator cars including a drain pipe, a lower discharge pipe,
