This invention relates to dental tools, being intended to provide a simple but effective attachment for a dental engine adapted to impart a reciprocatory movement to a suitable device or implement such as a: saw,
- abrasive or polishingstrip or the like, for
finishing and polishing fillings or separating and excising teeth, or any other purpose where such a reciprocatory movement is required. w
The invention will be best understood by reference to the following description'when taken in connection with the accompanying illustration of one specific embodiment thereof, while its scope will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims; In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool embodyingone form of the invention; Fig. '2 is a longitudinal, sectional elevation ofthe same; Fig. 8is a plan view of the head piece which holds and guides the reciprocatory tool-carrying-meinber; Fig. 4 is a plan of the tool shown in Fig. 2,;looking from the underside with the head removed; and Fig. 5-is" a similar plan with the tool carrier removed.
Referring'to the drawings and tothe embodiment of the invention therein shown, the same comprises a holder having the drum-shapedend 1 and the laterally extending neck 2. These and the other parts are shown on an exaggerated scale for the purpose of clearness. The end of the neck is threaded into the forward end of the sleeve 3, which latter is adapted to socket over the standard hand piece of any ordinary dental engine, serving as an intermediate connecting piece between the flexible shaft thereof' Specification of Letters Patent.

the tool through a suitable driving member, herein consisting of the shaft or spindle 4, journaled in the neck 2 and having an end 5 projecting into the sleeve 3. The end 5 of the shaft has any suitable connection to the driving shaft of the engine. but preferably one which is automatically made as the sleeve is' slipped over the hand piece. At one end of the neck pieceQ the shaft 4 has the collar 6 pinned thereon and at the opposite end the' small, beveled driving pinion 7 located Within the drum 1 and meshing with a beveled gear 8, the-latter arranged to turn within the drum upon the stud 9.
The cutting or abrasive device which is herein shown as a fine toothed saw blade 10, but which maybe of! any suitable character, is shown as removably attached by suitable connections to the U-shaped tool holder 11, the back or connecting piece of the tool holder being in the form of a bar 12 shaped to provide the right-angled slot 13 in which is seated the pin 14 projecting from the back of the beveled gear 8. The bar 12 of the tool. holder is so guided that it may have reciproca'tory movement across the axis of the gear 8, the pin 14 and slot 13 providing a crank and slotted cross-head connection between the gear and the tool holder to convert the rotary movement of the driving shaft into a rapid reciprocatory movement of the tool holder and its attached implement 10. -While the tool holder might be guided to move in a fixed, unchanging path, herein it is arranged to slide in slots 1515 formed in the" rim 16 of a swiveled head piece 17, the latter being'so attached to the drum 1 and holder 2 that it may be turned to a variety of different angles to secure the reciprocatory movement of the implement in the most convenient direction for the work then being performed. The angular adjustment of the tool holder can be had quickly and readily without disconnecting the driving connections and leaving the latter as effective in one position as another. Herein adjustment of the tool holder may be had through a range of approximately 300 degrees. To this end the swiveled head piece 17 is provided'with diametrically opposite ears or lugs 18 which project up over the outside of the drum 1 and overlie a circumferential groove 19 formed therein. These lugs carry in the groove and by means of which the socket is held with the edges of the rim 16 in close abutting contact with the lower edges" 'of the drum 1, while at the same timeper mitting the socket piece to be turned toadjust the tool holder to different angular po-' sitions, as, dotted lines inFig. l;
