Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GFFIGE.
MARSHALL TURLY, 0F COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,406, dated August 22, 187].
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARSHALL TURLY, of Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattomie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Device for Securing the Boxing in Hubs on Wheels for Vehicles; and do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a pipebox, having screw-threads around each end, to be inserted in a Wheel-hub by means of a sleeve `and shaft, with pin through the same at right angles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order `to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of the boxing with the means for securing the same, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
A represents a box for hubs of vehicle wheels,- providedwith a screw-thread around each end,
so that the box can be screwed into the hub, when the box Will remain tight until it is Worn out.
To attach the box in the hub I use a shaft, B, round at one end, to work in a guide, and the other end square, so that the different-sized maudrels or sleeves C may be slipped on to suit different sizes of boxes. A square pin, a, extends at or nearly at right angles with the shaft, and fits in notches made in the inner end of the box, thus giving a hold to turn the box in screwing it into the hub.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The pipe-box A, provided with screw-threads around each end, and screwed into the hub by means of the sleeve C, shaft B, and pin a, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of April, 1871.
MARSHALL TURLY.
