" This invention relates to a portable fire extinguisher in which the fire-extinguishing liquid is expelled from the container by means of pressure.
-' lfixperiments have been made on various liquids, using'air pressure to expel the contents of the extinguisher, but in all cases where compressedair or gas is. held in a niet'alcontainer-to be used at some futurev time as energy the results have been un- Isa-tisfactory. The most satisfactory .method found to expel liquids from a container is by using a chemlcal which when acted upon by certain reagents will liberate a gas.
Extinguishers now in use are of the soda and acid type, in which the apparatus consists of a metal container having a liquid exit at the top and also a cage for holding a bottle of' acid (generally sulfuric acid). To charge this apparatus, two and one-half gallons of a water solution of bicarbonate of soda is poured into the container; a bottle of sulfuric acid is-next placed in'a cage (the bottle being supplied with a very loose fitting stopper)- and the cage is then set in position and the lid or top casting screwed 'into place. To operate the extinguisher, the
container is turned bottom side jup, which causes the cork or stopper to drop from the solution. It becomes necessary, therefore,

At the lowerext'remity of the depression 19 is at tached a. pipe 13 which extends from the base of 19 to a point near the bottom ofgthe compartment 18 and has for. its purpose the conducting of the gas which is generated in the compartment 17 to the compartment 18. At the point where the pipe 13 joins the depression 19 there is fitted a screen 9 to prevent any solid substance passing into the tube 13 during the process of filling the extinguishe'r, Just below this point and in the pipe 13 is placed .a oneway ball valve which permits gas and liquid to flow through the pipe 13 from the compartment 17 to the compartment 18 but which prevents the pas- .ing through thepipe 13 and a seat 11 for th ball, substantially as shown.
