IMPRovEMENT IN GATES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,393, dated August 22, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HEZEKIAH Roer, of Union City, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Sliding Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speciiication.V

rIhis invention consists in a novel manner of securing one or more of its rails so as to be detachable,whereby they may be taken out to permit the passage of cattle or for other purposes wit-hout opening the gate.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of a gate and its frame or posts made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan ofthe same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section thereof taken at the dotted line in Figs. l and 2.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

A is the gate, which is composed of a series of horizontal rails, a a', secured at each end into one of two upright posts, b b', each of which is composed of two upright sla-ts, between which the said rails are secured. Two of these horizontal rails, a a', are loosely fitted to the posts, and have a notch, n, near each end, so as to hook over pins p p provided therefor between the upright slats of the posts b b. At the bottom of the post b a roller, G, is pivoted, and to the upper portion of the post b another roller, I, is pivoted. B, G, Cf, and D are four posts arranged in the ground, two of them, C C', being side by side, midway between the other two, B

and D, and the gate passing between them. Rails f f are secured at one end to the outer side of the post C', and at the same side Iof the post B. Between the upper portions of the middle posts C and G and to the said post D there is secured a rail, E, on which the upper roller I of the gate travels. 0n the ground between the posts C C and that B there is secured a plank, J, on which the roller G rolls 0r travels.

The gate may be fitted with any suitable latch to operate on a catch provided on the post B.

To open the gate, it is slid toward the post D, the roller G rolling on the boardJ and the roller I rolling on the rail E, and thereby supporting the gate. If desirable, the horizontal rails a a of the gate may be taken out to allow the passage of cattle without opening the gate. This is done by unhooking the rails omi over their pins p p and sliding them out between the upright slats or posts b b of the gate.

By supporting the gate at these two points, where the rollers are arranged, it is kept from sagging and losing its shape, andistherebymade more durable.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the posts b b', of the notched loose rails a a and the iixed pins p p, substantially and for the purpose herein specified.
