lt has 'heen found desirable, in onder to insure a `suflicient liquid expelling pressure, that such pressure be created at the time when the device is to be .used and the .most
satisfactory resul-ts have been obtained by generating .a gas through the action .of a -neagent upon a chemical. Fine extinguishers of the type in which gas is generated by the action of the reagent upon .the l.chemical dissolved in lthe .extinguishing :liiid :itself :are disadvantageous in that, ,in ,order .to obtain the proper reaction, the choice of substances which may .be .employed in connection with the .extinguishing .fluid is .extremely limited. The fluid when eje.cted frequently contains some `of :the .chemicals which have not been acted upon by the reagent and, also, jsome I.of the reagent (acid).
It is an object .of this invention to provide a gas generator which entirely :separate device from the receptacle for the liquid and which may be assembled and providedmith the lproper gas `generating reagents independently of the .liquid receptacle .and be Aconveniently attached to any liquid receptacle after the latter has been filled, or detached therefrom to permit .of filling of the latter., Grof .inspection thereof, without interfering with the gas generator.

In the drawing the chamber for containing the chemical to be acted upon by the reagent is shown at2 and the casing thereof terminates at its upper end in a screwthreaded casting 3, upon which is screwed a Yconcret having ay handle 5, the casting being ,screwedl against a. gasket 6 in the cover 1.
The bottom of the chamber 2 comprises a castingv 10 having a depending screwthreaded flange 11, which is threaded to fit the top or mouth of thereceptacle 12 with which it .is to be used. The gas generatoris detachably secured to the receptacle 12, which contains the liquid to be expelled, by screwingftjhe iiange 1l upon the upper .end of the receptacle, which may be of any desired construction. kThe upper end of the receptacle bears against a gasket lOf in the castinglO. y
Supported in the casting 10, about midwayof its height, Aisa cup 13 in which rests loosely, vupon the spacing lugs 14, the .con, tainer 15 for the reagent (such as an acid). The cup 13 extends a short distance into the receptacle 12 and has atube 16 attached to its lower end which extends downwardly to within a short distance from the bottom of the receptacle 12. At the top of this tube 1-6 is .a valve passage 17 controlled .by a. ball valve 18, whereby 4passage of liquid from receptacle 12-l to chamber 2 is prevented. The bottom .of the generating chamber, which is formed partially by the cup 18, compri-ses ia detachable cover or cap closing the mouth ofthe receptacle 12 and may replace the usual .cap or cover. `The ,container 15 is pro-vided with a loose fitting stopper 20 and is held in position inthe cup 13, when the device is inverted, by a ring y21 attached to bars 22 projecting from the under side of the .cover 4, as shown in the dra-wing. f
.Vhen it is desired to expel the contents ofthereceptacle 12 the device is inverted,y allowing the stopper 20 to fall away from the .container 15 and the contents thereof to escape into chamber 2, causingy a chemical reaction producing a gas:v l The generated gas flows between the container 15 `and the wall 'onf thecup 13, through the valve 1-7- 18 and tube 16, crea-ting a pressure in the receptacle 12 which .acts to force ythe liquid therein out through the usual hose and nozzle attachment 23-24L It will be apparent from the above den' purposes of assembling, a unitary device en-l tirely separate and removable from the liquid *containing receptacle and that access may be had to the interior of the latter at any time without disturbing the contents of the gas generator. Or the gas generator may be removed, cleaned and recharged with the chemicals without disturbing the contents of the liquid receptacle. A further feature and advantage of this construction and arrangement of a. separate and detachable gas generator is that if the contents of the receptacle are only partly expelled the gas generator may be removed and another substituted, thus rendering the device instantly ready to be again used.-
That I claim is:
l. A gas generator` comprising a unitary and removable device adapted to be attached to a liquid receptacle, said generator having a chamber with the bottom portion thereof adapted to close the mouth of said receptacle, a member extending downwardly from the bottom of the said chamber into the said receptacle to provide communication therebetween, an acid container positioned in said chamber, and means for detachably securing the bottom of said gas chamber to the said receptacle. f

A gas generator comprising a unitary and removable device adapted to be attached to a liquid receptacle, said generator having a chamber with the bottom 'portion thereof adapted to close the mouth of the said receptacle,L a cup forming part of thesaid bottom, a tube extending downwardly from the said cup into the said receptacle to provide communication between the receptacle and the said chamber, an acid container positioned in said cup, a removable cover for said chamber, a member positioned between said container and the cover of said chamber for holding theracid container in position,
and means for detachably securing the bottom of said gas chamber to the said receptacle with the tube extending downward into the latter. y y l 3. A gas generator comprising 'a unitary and removable device adapted to bel attached to a liquid receptacle, said generator having a chamber with the bottom portion'thereof adapted to close themouth of the said receptacle, a member extending' downwardly from the bottom of said chamber into the said receptacle to provide communication therebetween, an acid container positioned in said chamber, a removable cover for'said chamber, a device positioned between the container and the cover of the chamber for holding the container in position, and a depending screw-threaded flange formed on the bottom of the said chamber for detachably securing the gas generator to the said receptacle.
4. A gas generator comprising a unitary and removable` device adapted to be attached to a liquid receptacle, said generator having a chamber with the bottom portion thereof adapted to close the mouth of the said receptacle, a cup forming a part of the bottom of thesaid chamber, a tube extending downwardly from the said cup into the said receptacle to provide communication between the receptacle and the said chamber, an acid container positioned in ksaid cup, a removable cover for said chamber, a device positioned between the container and the cover of said chamber for holding the container in position, and a depending screw-threaded flange formed on the bottom of the said chamber for detachably securing the gas generator to the said receptacle.

A gas generator comprising a unitary and removable device adapted to be attached to a liquid receptacle, said generator having a chamber with the bottom portion thereof adapted to close the mouth of the said receptacle, 'a cup carried by the bottom of said chamber and extending above and below said bottom, a tube extending downwardly from said cup into the said receptacle to provide communication between the receptacle and the said'chamber, an acid container positioned in said'cup, a removable cover for said chamber, a member positioned between said container and the cover of said chamber forholding the container in position, and a depending screw-threaded flange formed von the bottom of said chamber and surrounding the said cup for detachably se-' curing the gas generator to the said receptacle,.
6. A gas generator comprising a unitary detachable device having its bottom portion provided with means by which said generator may be attached to the exterior and close the mouth' of a liquid receptacle, said bottom portion being also provided with communicating means adapted to permit the gas generated in said generator to pass into said liquid receptacle, and means for generating a gas in said generator.
