M. P. GERBING.
v CHURN. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 8.1915.

WITNESS I WgNI EIYTOR.
I '5' ATTORNEY.
THE COLUMBIA PLAQIOGRAP" co., WASHINGTON, n. C.
MAX 2. GERBING, or WENTWORTI-I, MISSOURI.
f 'cnonn.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1916.
Application filed June 8, 1915. Serial No. 32,826.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX P. GERBING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wentworth, in the county of Newton and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Churns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in churns.
The object of my invention is to provide a sanitary churn which is simple and strongly constructed, which is durable and not liable to get out of order, which is cheap to manufacture and efiicient in operation and in which the various parts may be quickly assembled in their operative positions and as quickly disassembled for the purposes of cleansing.
My invention provides still further novel means for detachably securing the paddles to the dasher shaft.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a view of my improved churn shown partly in vertical section and partly in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, some of the paddles being removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the paddles showing the adjacent bolt in cross section.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates a churn jar provided with a cover 2 having a central vertical hole 20, through which extends a vertical dasher shaft 11, which is rotatably mounted in a shaft bearing 10 supported by the cover 2.
Secured to the lower end of the shaft 11,
-WhiCl1 extends through a central vertical hole 20 in the cover 2 is a hub 21 provided with a plurality of radial arms 22, to which are respectively secured, preferably detachably, a plurality of paddles 23, which are preferably obliquely inclined to the plane of their revolution.
'Each of the radial arms 22 is provided with a lateral slot 24 adapted to have laterally inserted therein and removed therefrom a bolt 25 having a head 26 adapted to bear against one side of the adjacent paddle 23, the other side of which bears against the ad- ]acent arm 22. The threaded end of the bolt 25 is provided with a wing nut 27 which bears against the other side of the arm 22, so as to releasably clamp the paddle to said arm. By loosening the nut 27, the bolt 25 may be withdrawn laterally from the notch 24, thus detaching the paddle from the arm.
In order that the bolt 25 may be detached from the paddle 23, without having to remove the nut 27, the paddle is provided with a hole having an enlarged portion 28, which will permit the passage therethrough of the head 26, and with a contracted portion 29, which will receive the shank of the bolt 25, but which is smaller than the head 26 thereof. By sliding the paddle upwardly on the bolt until the head 26 thereof is in alinement with the enlarged portion 28 of the hole in the paddle, the bolt may be withdrawn from said hole.
After the churning has been completed, the various parts of the churn may be disassembled readily and thoroughly cleaned, thereby affording a cleanly and sanitary mechanism.
I do'not limit my invention to the structures shown and described, as modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, but not herein shown or described, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. A churn provided with a rotary shaft having a radial arm provided with a lateral notch, a paddle, and a bolt insertible into and removable sidewise from said notch and provided with means for clamping the paddle releasably to said arm.
2. A churn provided with a rotary shaft having a radial arm provided with a lateral notch, a paddle having a hole therethrough provided with an enlarged and a contracted portion, and a bolt insertible into and removable sidewise from said notch and having a head which will pass through the enlarged but not through the contracted portion of said hole, and provided with a nut clamped to the arm.
3. A churn provided with a rotary shaft clamped to the arm, the bolt having a head having a radial arm having a, hole therewhich will pass through the enlarged but through, a paddle having a hole therenot through the contracted portion of the 10 through providedwith an enlarged portion hole injthe' paddle. r
5 and a contracted portion, and; a bolt extend v In testimony whereof I have signed my ing through said holes and provided with a name to this specification. nut by which the paddlemey be releasably MAX P. GERBING.
