ABRASING AND POLISHING- BLOCK.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Oris H. FrsK, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abrasing and Polishing Blocks, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to produce an abrasing and polishing block for holding strips of sand paper, emery cloth, or polishing cloth, which isl more compact and cheaper than other polishing blocks known to me.

This and other objects are attained in the polishing block described in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Figure 1 is a plan view of the abrasing and polishing block embodying my .invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

The abrasing and polishing block embodying my invention comprises a -base 3, adapted to support a strip of abrasive or polishing material, and a clamp )amounted on the upper side of the base and adapted to clamp the opposite ends of the strip of abrasive or polishing material, between the inner edges 5 and 6 of

7 and 8, at the ends of the base 3, and the

outer edges

9 and 10 of the clamps.Y The coperating edges of the base and clamp are inclined downwardly toward the ends of .the base, for the purpose of drawing the abrasivev'or polishing strip more tightly/ over the supporting surface of the base, as well as to draw and maintain the clamp in close engagement with the upper surface of the base. Adjacent to each end of the base and immediately beneath the overhanging inclied edges ofthe

7 and 8, grooves 11 and 12 are formed in the upper face of the base 3. -These grooves are provided for receiving the ends of the strip mounted on the base, should they be so long as to extend beyond the lower ends of the inclined edges of the lugs. l

21 and 22 ofthe bores in which the pins are securely mounted preferably are also enlarged, for the purpose of receiving the ends of the springs which are mounted on the pins. rIhe vpins arel made of a length sufficient to extend considerably into both portions of the clamp, for the .purpose of maintaining perfect alinement of the portions, and of preventing their buckling when mounted in place on the base.

i In my improved abrasing and polishing block, I have produced a cheap, strong, compact and efficient construction, in which the base and clamp portions may be made either of wood or metal, or other material, wood being preferred, because of its cheapness.

In case wood is employed, the pins mayl consist of nails driven into one portion of the clamp and extending into the other portion of the clamp, with the springs mounted on the nails and extending into the boresl l1n the manner shown.

In securing the abrasing or polishing strip in place, the inner ledges of the clamp are brought inV contact with the outer edges of the lugs and arethen forced inward, thus sol carrying the abrasing or polishing material securely into place and drawing it tight across 'the outer surface of the base. This clamping action not only holds the abrasing or polishing material tight across the base, but prevents its having any transverse motion relatively to the base. v

If desirable, a cushioning material K, such as felt, may be placed between the outer surv face of the base and the abrasing or polishthe portions apart to bring the inclined and dove-tail edges of the clamp and base into clamping engagement.

v2. In an abrasing and `polishing block,

' the combination of a base havingupwardly extending ends with grooves located adjacent to the ends, said ends having their inner edges downwardly and outwardly inclined, whereby a transversely extending dove-tail slot"A is formed on the base, and a clamp consisting of two portions, mountedV in the slot, each of said portions have one of-its edges outwardly and downwardly inclined to cooperate with one of the inclined inner edges of the ends, and means for maintaining the portions in alinement and the inclined edges of the base and portions in clamping engagement with the ends of the base.

In combination in an abrasing and polishing block, a base having upwardly eX- tending ends with grooves located adjacent' to the ends adapted to receive the ends of a piece of abrading or polishing material stretched across the base, said ends having their inner edges downwardly and outwardly inclined whereby a transversely eX- tending dove-tail slot is formed on the base,
