To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, \VALTER IVRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new an useful Improvements in Printing Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in printing mechanism, and especially to that class of mechanism used for printing manifold copies resembling typewritten matter, the object of the invention being to provide an apparatus of this character which will print such copies with With this main object in view, the principal improvements are to provide means for feeding the sheets of paper on to the bed in both directions of reciprocation thereof.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a frame on which the apparatus is mounted, the bed 2 moving on ball bearings 3 in grooves l in the top of the frame. In said bed 2 is contained the chase 5 with the type surface 6. To reciprocate said bed there is provided a transverse shaft 7 rotated by the a usual crank handle. not shown. which shaft 7 has secured thereon. adjacent to each side of the frame, a wheel 8 having two segment gears 9, ll), of which the segment gear 9 is substantially a semi-cin-ular gear and of smaller radius while thrsegment gear 10 is slightly less than a semi-circular gear but of larger radius. IVith this mechanism there is produced from the continuous rotary motion of the shaft a reciprocating motion of thebed, for, as the end of the segment car 10 passes. the vertical plane througi the shaft 7 and travels out of mesh with the rack 11, the semi-circular gear 9 travels into mesh with the pinion 12 causing said pinion to revolve in the opposite direction to that in which it had been just revolving, and impartin a backward movement to the rack 11. hen the rear end of the semi-circular gear 9 passes away from the pinion 12, the advancing end of the segment gear 10 comes into mesh with the rack 11 causing it and the pinion 12 to travel in the opposite direction. This contrivance enables the apparatus to be operated at great speed.
For the purpose of obtaining rapidity of printing with this class of devices, there is provided mechanism for feeding and printing sheets during each movement of reciprocation of the bed. For this purpose on each side of the center of the machine is a feed frame 14 extending obliquely upward and outward from a point near the center, in which frame is placed a box '15 having its ends 17 oblique to the back 18, said box containing t e pile of sheets to be delivered from that side to the printing mechanism. The sides of the frame 14 have lips or flanges 19 bent inward over the edge of the box to hold the sheets in the box. Vithin the box is a false bottom 20 which has pins 21 extending through slots 22 in the sides of the box and is drawn forward to the front of the frame by springs 23. This construction insures that the uppermost sheet of the pile is always pressed against a roller 24 carried upon a shaft 25, the end of said shaft having a small gear 26 meshing with an internal segment rack 27, carried u on the end of a lever 28 pivoted on the eed frame 14 at 29 and having a downwardly extending finger 30. Said racks for the two feed frames are on opposite sides of the machine, and the corresponding downwardly extending finger 30 is adapted to be engaged by a post 31 on the same side of the machine. These screws serve to old down the cylinder upon the inking ribbon. In recesses 63 in the sides of the blocks 59 are mounted the bearings 64 for the shafts of the guide rollers 38, said bearings being pressed outward by springs 65 and adjustably pressed inward by screws 66. The; sides of the guides are slotted as shown at 67 to permit said screws to pass the'rethrough.
I claim:
1. In a printing apparatus, the combination, with the reciprocating bed, of a frame extending upward and outward at each side of the center of motion of the bed, means for supporting the pile of sheets in each frame, and means operated by the motion in opposite directions of the bed for feeding the uppermost sheet of each pile alternately to the bed, substantially as described.
2. In a printing apparatus, the combination, with the reciprocating bed, of a frame extending upward and outward at each side of the center of motion of the bed, a cylinder above the center of the bed, means for supporting the pile of sheets in each frame,
and means operated by the motion in opposite directions of the bed for feeding the uppermost sheet of each pile between the cylinder and the bed, alternately to the bed, substantially as described.
3. In a printing apparatus, the combination, with the reclprocating bed, of a frame extending upward and outward at each side of the center of motion of the bed, and comprising a rim or lip for supporting, a pile of sheets, and means for raising the upper most sheet above said rim or lip in our movement of the bed and moving it down past said rim or lip in the opposite movemeat, substantially as described.
4. In a printing apparatus, the combination, with the reciprocating bed, of a frame-ex-tending upward and outward at each side of the center of motion of the bed, means for supporting the pile of sheets in each frame, a roller over each frame, springs for pressing the uppermost sheet against the rollers, and means for rocking each roller correspondingly with the reciprocating movement of the bed, substantially as described.
In a printing apparatus, the combination, with the reciprocating bed, of a frame extending upward and outward at each side of the center of motion of the bed, means for supporting the pile of sheets in each frame, a roller over each frame, springs for pressing the uppermost sheet against the rollers, a rim or lip for retaining the loweredge of the uppermost sheet, the motion of the roller first raising said sheet above said rim, and then moving it down over the same. and means for rocking each roller correspondingly with the reciprocating movement of the bed, substantially as described.
6. In a printing apparatus, the combination, with the reciprocating bed, of a frame extending upward and outward at each side of the center of motion of the bed, means for supporting the pile of sheets in each frame. a roller over each frame, springs for pressing the uppermost sheet against the rollers, and means for rocking each roller correspondingly with the reciprocating movement of the bed, said means comprising a post carried by the bed, and a rocking lever rocked by said post and operatively connected with the roller, substantially as described.
7. In a printing apparatus, the combination, with the reciprocating bed, of a cylinder thereover, means for feeding a sheet of paper between said bed and cylinder, rollers between which the sheet of paper is guided, and a direct connection between the bed and said rollers for rotating said rollers by the movement of the bed, operative in one direction of said movement, and in operative in the other direction, substantially as described.
8. In a printing apparatus, the combination of a bed, a cylinder thereover, a feeding device at each side of the cylinder for feeding the sheets between said bed and cylinder, and rollers between which sheets of paper so fed alternately in opposite directions are guided, said rollers being revol ved by said movement of the bed in one direction, but not revolved thereby in the opposite direction, substantially as described.
9. The combination with a reciprocating bed and an impression cylinder, of a frame on each side of the impression cylinder and extending obliquely upwardly and outwardly therefrom. a sheet-containing box for each frame, nibs or flanges 19 to hold the sheets in each box, a false bottom in each box, springs to draw the false bottoms forward, rollers against which the sheets are pressed by said springs. means connected to said bed to turn said rollers, and means coiiperating with said rollers to feed the sheets to the bite, of the cylinder and bed.
10. the angle between the roller and bed, automatic means, including a pressure roller, on the magazine for directing the paper into frictional contact with the surface of said impression roller, and means for lifting the printed end of the sheet preparatory to its removal from the machine.
22. In a machine for printing imitation typewritten matter, the combination with a type-surfaced ribbon-covered bed, of an impression roller coacting therewith, a frame extending upward at each side of the'roller, means for supporting a pile of sheets in each frame, and means operated by the relative motion between the bed and roller for feeding the uppermost sheet of each pile alternately to the bed.
23.-A machine for printing imitation typewritten matter, comprising two coacting relatively reciprocating members, one an impression roller and the other a type-surfaced bed, meansfor automatically feeding sheets of paper into the angle between said roller and bed, and means for raising one end of the sheetpreparatory to the discharge of the same from the machine.
24. The combination of a bed, an impression roller making more than a complete revolution on cooperation with the bed, means in fixed relation to the roller for supporting a plurality of sheets of paper and placing them, one after another, automatically on the bed, and operating means independent of the impression roller for removing the paper from the bed.

In a printing mechanism, the combination of a bed adapted to carry .a page form of type surface, means for holding an inking ribbon in contact with such form, an impression roller, means for moving the bed back and forth beneath the roller, and means independent of the roller for automatically removing from the bed the paperlaid there on on each reciprocation thereof.
26. The combination of a bed, a platen, means for automatically feeding paper be tween the bed and platen, means for auto-.
matically raising one end of a sheet of paper which is thus placed on the bed, said raising being at the opposite end of the bed from the platen and coming after that portion of the sheet has been printed by the bed and platen, and mechanism adapted to grasp such raised end and withdraw the sheet.
